            ¡Por fin, corazón por fin! Se acabó la sequía de Puerto Rico en la Serie del Caribe. Luego de 16 años de no celebrar un campeonato caribeño, los representantes de Puerto Rico, los Criollos de Caguas, vinieron de menos a más para romper la desdicha puertorriqueña. Puerto Rico derrotó 1-0 a México en un mega emocionante juego Final para vivir por vez #15 lo que es ser campeón en una Serie del Caribe. Es el 1er campeonato desde que los Cangrejeros de Santurce ganaran en el 2000, el 4to de los Criollos de Caguas y su 1ero desde el 1987. México se quedó corto del “back to back”, de su 5to campeonato en 7 series y su #10 en total. La República Dominicana a pesar de ser el peor equipo en las ultimas serie sigue dominando con 19 campeonatos en total. Dominicana lleva dos Series del Caribe seguidas sin ganar un juego.

            El juego Final entre México y Puerto Rico fue un duelo puro de lanzadores entre Héctor Velázquez (México) y Adalberto Flores (Puerto Rico). Ambos lanzaron 6 solidas entradas. Miguel Mejía fue quién se apuntó el triunfo sobre Jake Sánchez. La única carrera del juego fue gracias a que Puerto Rico jugó Baseball 101. Doble de Yadiel Rivera para abrir la 10ma entrada seguido de toque de sacrificio del bate de Jesmuel Valentín y finalizado con bombo de sacrificio del receptor Morales. ¡Así se juega el buen béisbol que gana juego, aplauso a Luis Matos!

            Puerto Rico llegó a la Final al vencer 9-6 a Venezuela gracias al 3er cuadrangular en la serie para el MVP David Vidal. Jesmuel Valentín, Yadiel Rivera y Vidal remolcaron dos carreras cada uno. Román ganó el juego, Lively lo perdió y Gómez logró el salvado. Venezuela bateo 16 hits y dejaron 27 corredores en las bases. México en la semifinal derrotó 1-0 a Cuba en un duelo de lanzadores que ganó la tripleta de Miguel Peña, Daniel Rodríguez y Jake Sánchez ante el cubano Lázaro Blanco. Agustín Murillo remolcó la única carrera del juego.

            Las Águilas de Mexicali (México) terminaron con la mejor marca de la serie 4-2 con victorias 4-2 sobre Puerto Rico gracias a cuadrangular de dos carreras de Chris Roberson y bombazo solitario de Yuniesky Betancourt. Puerto Rico contó con bambinazos de David Vidal e Iván De Jesús Jr. Este duelo fue la noche inaugural en Culiacán y la asistencia fue de 19,177. México derrotó 7-2 a República Dominicana al batear 15 hits, incluyendo 4 de Roberson y contar con 7 ponches en 5 entradas de Héctor Velázquez. México también derrotó 5-1 a Venezuela gracias a un walk-off grand slam de Sebastián Valle. ¡Y se vuelve a repetir la historia!

            Los Alazanes de Granma (Cuba) terminaron con marca de 3-2, incluyendo victorias 4-0 ante República Dominicana gracias a 6 ponches en 6.1 entradas de Lázaro Blanco, 6-1 sobre Puerto Rico gracias a cuadrangular con tres remolcadas de William Saavedra, y 4-0 ante México gracias a cuadrangulares consecutivos de Alfredo Despaigne y William Saavedra. Las Águilas del Zulia (Venezuela) terminaron con marca de 3-2 al derrotar 4-3 a Puerto Rico gracias a cuadrangular de Jesús Flores. David Vidal sacó su 2do cuadrangular de la serie por Puerto Rico. Venezuela dominó 8-3 a Cuba gracias a 3 hits, 3 bases robadas, doble y dos remolcadas de Freddy Galvis. Carlos Benítez sacó bambinazo por Cuba. La 3era victoria de Venezuela fue 4-3 ante República Dominicana gracias a 3 carreras en la 8va entrada. José Castillo y Rene Reyes sacaron bambinazos en el juego. Los Criollos de Caguas (Puerto Rico) tuvieron marca de 3-3 con solo una victoria en la ronda inicial donde derrotaron 10-2 a República Dominicana con cuadrangular de Rusney Castillo, 3 hits para David Vidal y 3 hits con dos remolcadas para Iván De Jesús Jr. Los Tigres de Licey (República Dominicana) terminaron con marca de 0-4 y llevan una racha de 10 derrotas seguidas desde la Serie del Caribe del 2015 en Puerto Rico. Llevan dos series sin ganar un solo partido. ¿Terminará la mala racha en Barquisimeto, Venezuela?

Comienza la era de Bobby Roode en NXT TakeOver: San Antonio

            Otra vez NXT realizó una magna cartelera como telonera de un mega evento de la WWE. Ese fue el caso de NXT TakeOver: San Antonio, el cual sirvió de antesala para el aniversario #30 del famoso Royal Rumble. De principio a fin los muchachos de NXT se robaron el show con su entrega en cada movida y su habilidad para meter el público en cada lucha. El evento, el cual fue trasmitido únicamente por el WWE Network, rompió la tanda luchística con una excelente batalla entre Tye Dillinger vs Eric Young. Desde que sonó su música hasta que sonó la campana final, el “Perfect 10” se echó a los presentes en un bolsillo. Young y Sanity hicieron de las suyas para alzarse con el triunfo. Young aplicó una bonita rompe nuca para lograr la victoria por conteo de 3; pero Dillinger volvió a llevarse el aplauso final de los presentes.

            Roderick Strong vs Andrade “Cien” Almas fue una lucha 5 estrellas. Ambos tuvieron muy buenos momentos, realizaron muy buenas movidas y vendieron muy bien sus personajes. Strong se llevó el triunfo con un Running Boot al rostro de Almas para lograr el conteo de 3. Strong lo veo ya mismo con el campeonato de NXT mientras espero que Almas tenga un papel protagónico próximamente. Los Authors of Pain, manejados por la leyenda Paul Ellering, simplemente abusaron de DIY (Johnny Gargano y Tommaso Ciampa) para coronarse nuevos campeones de Parejas en NXT. Fue una lucha excelente donde los técnicos le vendieron a la perfección las abusivas movidas de los rudos. Desde el brutal lazo vaquero hasta el doble Power Bomb, los Authors of Pain lucieron como se ven de grandes y fuertes, la manera correcta de vender dos abusadores. DIY sin duda son de lo mejor dentro del ring.

            Un momento interesante en la noche fue cuando apareció Seth Rollins en NXT buscando a Triple H. Triple H mandó la seguridad para sacarlo y así lo hicieron luego de la clásica resistencia de Rollins. Asuka retuvo su faja de Mujeres de NXT al vencer a Nikki Cross, Peyton Royce y Billie Kay en un Fatal Four Way. Las chicas se fueron bien extreme y le sacaron gritos de “Holy shit” a los presentes. Muy buena lucha de las chicas. Sin duda impresionaron.

            Y llegamos a la estelar. Comenzó la era gloriosa de Bobby Roode. Roode aprovechó una lesión en la rodilla de Shinsuke Nakamura para aplicarle un DDT y lograr el conteo de 3. A pesar que la lucha empezó lenta, tan pronto entraron en calor, se quedaron con la cartelera y se terminaron de echar a los presentes en sus bolsillos. Los gritos de “This is Awesome! no faltaron y ni hablar de las buenas entradas de ambos. Sabemos que Nakamura es algo limitado en sus movidas, solo patadas y rodillazos, pero dieron muy buenos falsos finales que mantuvieron al borde de la silla a los fans. Veremos si Nakamura, luego de que se recupere, sube a Raw o Smackdown mientras disfrutamos de Roode como el nuevo mega campeón de NXT. ¡Glorious!

Celtics’ Thomas named East Player of the Month; Warriors’ Curry and Durant share West honor

NEW YORK – The Boston Celtics’ Isaiah Thomas today was named the Kia NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Month for games played in January, and the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant were selected as co-winners of the Western Conference honor.

Thomas led the NBA in scoring (32.9 ppg) and tied for fifth in the East in assists (6.9 apg) for the month as the Celtics went 10-4 to take over first place in the Atlantic Division.  The 5-9 Thomas, who was named an All-Star for the second straight season, shot 49.7 percent from the field, 43.2 percent from three-point range and 94.1 percent from the free throw line.  He recorded eight games with at least 30 points, including two with 40 points or more.  Thomas has scored at least 20 points in each of his last 33 games, the NBA’s longest streak this season.  His current scoring average (29.7 ppg) is just shy of Boston’s single-season record, which Larry Bird set with 29.9 points per game in 1987-88.

Curry ranked fourth in the West in scoring (27.8 ppg) and Durant was fifth (27.4 ppg) as the Warriors posted an NBA-best 12-2 record in January.  Named an All-Star starter for the fourth consecutive season, Curry led all NBA players with 62 three-pointers, averaged 6.9 assists and 4.5 rebounds and shot 47.9 percent from the field and 43.1 percent from three-point range.  Durant, an All-Star selection for the eighth year in a row, was second in the conference in blocks (2.07 bpg) and eighth in field goal percentage (56.5), and he added 7.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game.

Isaiah Thomas, Boston Celtics

Jan. 3 vs. Utah: Scored 29 points and dished out a career-high 15 assists in a 115-104 win over the Jazz.

Jan. 11 vs. Washington: Finished with 38 points, five rebounds and five assists in a 117-108 victory against the Wizards.

Jan. 30 vs. Detroit: Shot 15-of-15 from the free throw line on his way to 41 points and added eight assists in a 113-109 win over the Pistons.

Stephen Curry/Kevin Durant, Warriors

Jan. 4 vs. Portland: Curry posted 35 points and seven rebounds and Durant added 30 points in a 125-117 win over the Trail Blazers.

Jan. 18 vs. Oklahoma City: Durant scored 40 points on 13-for-16 shooting and Curry added 24 points in a 121-100 win over the Thunder.

Jan. 25 @ Charlotte: Durant scored 33 points and Curry hit six three-pointers on his way to 28 points in a 113-103 win over the Hornets.

Kia NBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month

76ers’ Joel Embiid and Suns’ Marquese Chriss named Kia NBA Rookies of the Month

NEW YORK – The Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid and the Phoenix Suns’ Marquese Chriss today were named Kia NBA Eastern and Western Conference Rookies of the Month, respectively, for games played in January.

Embiid, the third pick in NBA Draft 2014 presented by State Farm, has earned the Eastern Conference honor all three months this season.  In January, the 7-foot center led all rookies in scoring (23.4 ppg), rebounding (9.1 rpg) and blocked shots (2.56 bpg).  Philadelphia went 7-2 when Embiid played and 10-5 overall for the month.  Embiid scored at least 20 points in each of his first seven games of January after doing the same in his final three games of December, joining Allen Iverson as the only players in 76ers history to record 10 straight 20-point games in their rookie seasons.

Chriss, the eighth pick in NBA Draft 2016 presented by State Farm, ranked fourth among Western Conference rookies in scoring (8.3 ppg), fifth in rebounding (3.6 rpg) and third in field goal percentage (45.9) for the month.  He also led all first-year players in steals with 1.36 per game.  The 6-10 forward scored in double figures five times, including a career-high 20 points against the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 30.

As part of NBA All-Star 2017, Embiid and Chriss are both set to compete in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge on Friday, Feb. 17 at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans (9 p.m. ET, TNT and ESPN Radio).

Jan. 18 vs. Toronto: Scored 26 points (12-of-14 free throws) and grabbed nine rebounds in a 94-89 win over the Raptors.

Jan. 3 vs. Miami: Recorded 18 points and six rebounds in a 99-90 victory against the Heat.

Jan. 8 vs. Cleveland: Contributed 12 points, four assists, three rebounds and three blocks in a 120-116 loss to the Cavaliers.

Jan. 21 @ New York: Notched 15 points, five rebounds and three steals in a 107-105 win over the Knicks.

Washington’s Brooks and Golden State’s Kerr named NBA Coaches of the Month

NEW YORK – The Washington Wizards’ Scott Brooks and the Golden State Warriors’ Steve Kerr today were named the NBA Eastern and Western Conference Coaches of the Month, respectively, for games played in January.

Brooks guided Washington to an Eastern Conference-best 12-4 record during January as the Wizards climbed into a tie for first place in the Southeast Division.  Washington went 7-0 at Verizon Center to extend its home winning streak to 15 games, tied for the second-longest run in franchise history.  The Wizards closed the month on a five-game winning streak, which included victories over the current Atlantic Division leader, the Boston Celtics, and the Southeast co-leader, the Atlanta Hawks.  Brooks’ team held opponents to 43.4 percent shooting from the field, the best mark in the NBA.

Kerr led the Warriors to an NBA-best 12-2 record in January, with Golden State losing to the Memphis Grizzlies in overtime and falling to the Miami Heat after Miami guard Dion Waiters made a tiebreaking three-pointer with 0.6 seconds left.  The Warriors led the NBA in scoring (120.3 ppg), assists (30.6 apg), field goal percentage (50.9) and point differential (14.1) for the month, which included wins over the East-leading Cleveland Cavaliers, the Houston Rockets and the LA Clippers.  On Jan. 23, Kerr and his staff earned the honor to coach the Western Conference All-Stars in the 2017 NBA All-Star Game after clinching the best record in the conference through games played on Sunday, Feb. 5.
