Miami Marlins RBI has won the Senior Baseball Division Championship of the 2015 Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) World Series, earning their fourth overall RBI World Series Baseball Championship and their first in the Senior Division since 2004.  This also marks the second consecutive baseball championship for the Miami Marlins RBI program – they won the Junior Baseball Division Championship at the 2014 RBI World Series.

Miami Marlins RBI defeated Harrisburg RBI by the score of 5-4 at Globe Life Park in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers, and finished the tournament with a 5-1 record.

Miami shortstop Bryan Lavastida, 17, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Senior Baseball Division Championship Game.  He finished tied with a game-high of two base hits, an RBI, a stolen base and one run scored, including the decisive run for Miami. He finished the RBI World Series with a .450 batting average (within the top-5 in the tournament), 1.172 OPS (also within the top-5 in the tournament), six RBIs and seven runs scored.

The RBI World Series, which was hosted by the Rangers for the second consecutive year, is the international baseball and softball championship tournament of the RBI program, the Major League Baseball youth initiative designed to provide young people from underserved and diverse communities with the opportunity to play baseball and softball, encourage academic success, and teach the value of teamwork and other important life lessons.

A 30-minute documentary that gives an inside look into the baseball portion of the 2015 RBI World Series will air on MLB Network at 11:30 am ET on Sunday, August 30^th.

The RBI program has provided a path for many players to enter the college and professional game.  More than 200 RBI participants have been drafted by MLB Clubs throughout the program’s 27-year history, and many others were given the opportunity for higher education through baseball and softball scholarships. There have been 55 RBI players selected in the 2012-2015 MLB Drafts, nearly 30 of whom have played in the RBI World Series (between 2009 and 2014).

Since the inception of the RBI program in 1989, MLB Clubs have drafted more than 200 RBI participants, and more than 80 players since 2008. Alumni on MLB rosters during the 2014 regular season include Michael Bourn (Atlanta Braves), Carl Crawford (Los Angeles Dodgers), Coco Crisp (Oakland Athletics), Yovani Gallardo (Texas Rangers), Chris Iannetta (Los Angeles Angels) James Loney (Tampa Bay Rays), Anthony Rendon (Washington Nationals), CC Sabathia (New York Yankees), Hector Santiago (Los Angeles Angels), Justin Upton (San Diego Padres) and Chris Young (New York Yankees).  Crawford (Houston RBI – ‘97), Loney (Houston RBI – ‘99), Crisp (LA RBI – ‘95, ‘96) and Gallardo (Fort Worth RBI – ‘03) have each played in the RBI World Series.

Dominican Republic North RBI, out of Santo Domingo, has won the Junior Baseball Division Championship of the 2015 Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) World Series, earning their seventh overall RBI World Series championship and fourth Junior Baseball Division Championship in six years (2010-2012, 2015).  Dominican Republic North triumphed over Houston Astros RBI by the score of 12-7 in a seven-inning contest today at Globe Life Park in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers.  Dominican Republic North RBI finished the tournament with a 5-1 record.

 Dominican Republic shortstop Widimer Joaquin was named the Most Valuable Player of the Junior Baseball Division Championship Game after driving in three runs on three hits, including a third inning double to break a 3-3 tie that would give the Dominican Republic a lead they would not relinquish. Joaquin, who also scored three times and stole a base in the championship game, finished the tournament with a .350 batting average (one home run, one double and five singles), .985 OPS, seven runs scored and seven RBIs.

A group of players in the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program will receive the experience of a lifetime in Arlington, Texas when they take the field tomorrow at Globe Life Park in Arlington, the home of the Texas Rangers, to represent their respective cities in the championship games of the 2015 RBI World Series.  Miami Marlins RBI of Miami, Fla., which won the Jr. Division Championship in 2014, and Harrisburg RBI of Harrisburg, Penn., which won the Sr. Division Championship in 2013, will vie for the Senior Baseball Division Championship, which is scheduled to be played tomorrow at 10:45 a.m. CT.  In the Junior Division, Houston Astros RBI will take on Dominican Republic RBI at 7:30 a.m. CT.

The RBI World Series is the international baseball and softball championship tournament of the Major League Baseball RBI program, which is designed to provide young people from underserved and diverse communities with the opportunity to play baseball and softball, encourage academic success and teach the value of teamwork.

The Playoffs of the Baseball Senior Division of the 2015 Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) World Series began today at 7:45 a.m. CT in Southlake, Texas.  At Bicentennial Park, #1 HARRISBURG RBI defeated #4 PUERTO RICO RBI, 1-0, in a tightly-contested pitcher’s duel.  Attached is the box score, while below are players of the game:

SIMS WORLD: Harrisburg starter Zach Sims tossed six scoreless innings, retiring 18 of the 21 batters he faced, and struck out six on the day.

FLYING GEESAMAN: Harrisburg’s Michael Geesaman delivered the game’s only run via a two-out single in the 5^th inning to drive in Connor Anderson.

MAD GOOD: Puerto Rico starting Mad Salgado pitched very well in a losing effort.  He retired 18 of the 22 batters he faced in his complete game effort.

TOURNAMENT UPDATE: Harrisburg RBI has advanced to the semifinals in the Senior Division, and is now facing #3 Chicago Cubs/Union League Boys & Girls Club RBI

Paterson RBI, which is making its first-ever appearance at the RBI World Series, joins Arizona RBI (Phoenix), Dominican Republic North RBI and Harrisburg RBI as #1 seeds in their respective playoff brackets at the 2015 Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) World Series, the international baseball and softball championship tournament of the Major League Baseball RBI program. Tournament Play in the 2015 Senior Division of the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) World Series continued today at 10:30 a.m. CT in Grapevine, Texas.  At Grapevine High School, HOUSTON ASTROS RBI topped PUERTO RICO RBI, 2-1, in a tight contest. Attached is the box score, while below are players of the game:

WHAT BULLPEN?: Both team’s starters went the distance in this pitcher’s battle.  Houston’s Myles Campbell struck out eight batters, walking only two, and gave up one earned run in the bottom of the 7^th inning.  Puerto Rico’s Rodney Matos surrendered only one earned run in the losing effort. 

GILDER-LAND: Houston’s Caleb Gilder put the game out of reach for Puerto Rico with a one-out solo home run in the top of the 5^th inning.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Christian Stidham doubled in the first inning to drive in Cincinnati’s first run and propel the team to a 5-2 win over Puerto Rico.  The first baseman was 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored and a RBI.  Shortstop Clay Woeste drove in a game-high two runs on two singles to tack on some insurance runs.

 Tournament play in the Baseball Senior Division of the 2015 Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) World Series continued today at 10:30 a.m. CT in Grapevine, Texas.  At Oak Grove H, PUERTO RICO RBI tied PATERSON RBI by a score of 6-6 in a five-inning, time-shortened game.  Attached is the box score, while below are players of the game:

CLUTCH: With his team down by one, Paterson right fielder Anfernee Torruella delivered a clutch single to drive in two runs and give his club the lead.  He would also steal a base and score his team’s sixth, and final run later in the inning.   Puerto Rico third baseman Bryan Irizarry returned the favor in the bottom half of the frame with a two-out, bases-clearing, three-run triple to tie it up.
