MEMPHIS’ JA MORANT WINS
2021-22 KIA NBA MOST IMPROVED PLAYER AWARD
NEW YORK, April 25, 2022 – Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant has been named the 2021-22 Kia NBA Most Improved Player, the NBA announced today.
A three-year NBA veteran, Morant becomes the first player to win the Kia NBA Most Improved Player Award with Memphis. The annual award, which was first presented in the 1985-86 season, is designed to honor an up-and-coming player who has made a dramatic improvement from the previous season or seasons.
Morant received 221 points (38 first-place votes) from a global panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters. San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray finished in second place with 183 points (20 first-place votes). Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland finished in third place with 178 points (11 first-place votes). Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote.
A first-time NBA All-Star selection this season, Morant averaged a career-high 27.4 points, 6.7 assists and 5.7 rebounds in 33.1 minutes in 57 games. He also shot a career-best 49.3 percent from the field. Morant, 22, is the third player in NBA history to reach his 2021-22 numbers in points, assists, rebounds and field goal percentage within his first three seasons, joining NBA 75th Anniversary Team members Oscar Robertson and Dwyane Wade.
In addition to an 8.3-point increase in scoring and 4.3 percent improvement in field goal percentage from the 2020-21 season, Morant established career-high averages in minutes, rebounds, steals (1.16 spg), free throws made (5.5), free throws attempted (7.3) and three-pointers made (1.5). He also recorded a career high in three-point field goal percentage (34.4).
Morant posted six games with at least 40 points after having one 40-point game over his first two regular seasons. He set the Grizzlies’ single-game regular-season scoring record in back-to-back games, first with 46 points against the Chicago Bulls on Feb. 26 and then with a career-high 52 points against the Spurs on Feb. 28. As part of his success as a scorer this season, the 6-3 Morant led the NBA in points in the paint per game (16.6).
His honors this season included earning a starting spot in the 2022 NBA All-Star Game. Morant also was named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week in consecutive weeks (Jan. 3 and Jan. 10), the first two such honors of his career. He became the first player in Grizzlies history to win the award in back-to-back weeks.
Behind Morant, the Grizzlies (56-26) finished with the second-best record in the NBA, matched the franchise’s single-season record for victories and secured their highest playoff seed ever (No. 2 in the Western Conference). Morant was one of three Memphis players to earn votes for the Kia NBA Most Improved Player Award, along with guard Desmond Bane (who finished in fifth place) and forward-center Jaren Jackson Jr. (who received one second-place vote).
Morant, the 2019-20 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, was selected by the Grizzlies with the second overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He entered the 2021-22 season with career averages of 18.4 points, 7.3 assists and 3.9 rebounds across his first two seasons.
Morant will be presented with a special edition 75th Anniversary commemorative trophy today in celebration of the honor, gifted in addition to the Kia NBA Most Improved Player Award trophy, which he will receive later. The commemorative trophy, composed of a solid crystal basketball, features the NBA 75 logo 3D laser etched and suspended within its center.

On March 18, Barnes posted career highs of 31 points and 17 rebounds to go with six assists against the Los Angeles Lakers, becoming the first rookie to have at least 30 points, 15 rebounds and five assists in a game since Blake Griffin in March 2011. Enlio to remain FIBA 3x3 Official Court until 2030 |
|
APRIL 22, 2022 SHIJIAZHUANG/MIES (China, Switzerland) - FIBA and Enlio, a Chinese leading sports floor-making company, announced a multi-year extension of their partnership for the FIBA 3x3 World Tour and the FIBA 3x3 World Cups. “It is our great pleasure to continue our successful working relationship with Enlio in 3x3,” FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said. “The partnership with Enlio has been a key step in the professionalization of 3x3 as a fast-paced and spectacular Olympic discipline, through high-technology flooring systems that address players’ needs for safety and high performance.” The announcement comes just one year after Enlio was the court supplier for the 3x3 event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and three years before the end of the previous agreement. In 2019, Enlio engineered a court, tailor-made for 3x3, whose SES® Elastic Tile - softer than ordinary polypropylene material and which realizes full body soft structure - ensures excellent support and protection for the players’ body. The court’s anti-slip and impacting force effectively protects the players’ joints and helps them express their strength and leaping ability to the maximum. The soft structure and smooth texture design offers the players protection against serious bruises. This technology also guarantees a better and more stable ball bounce. Its weather resistance property helps retain excellent elasticity all year round. Last but not least, the court is made of recyclable thermoplastic elastomer tiles. “We are delighted to extend our partnership with FIBA for 3x3,” Enlio Chairman Li Yu said. “It was a great pride for us to see our courts used all around the world in FIBA 3x3 competitions, including the Tokyo Olympics. We are passionate about the growth of the discipline at the Paris and Los Angeles Games and are excited to be given the chance to bring our contribution for the foreseeable future.” | |

The monthly honor recognizes a player who best demonstrates the passion that the league and NBA players share for giving back to their communities. After experiencing the loss of his father in August 2021, Biyombo dedicated the 2021-22 season to him, choosing to wear no. 18 in honor of his father’s birthday. As part of his intention to honor his father, Biyombo announced in March that he would contribute his entire salary from the 2021-22 season to establish and construct a new hospital in his native country that will improve access to better health care for generations. “I wanted to make this year about my dad because he spent most of his life making his life about me, my brothers, my sisters and servicing people, and I've seen how people try to survive daily in the Congo,” said Biyombo about his endeavor. “I thought we were doing enough by refurbishing hospitals and clinics, but I think it's time we go a little bigger by building something that will service people, hopefully for generations." Biyombo will be presented with the award on April 19 ahead of Game 2 of the Suns’ first round playoff series against the New Orleans Pelicans at 10 p.m. ET. The NBA and Kaiser Permanente will donate $10,000 to the Bismack Biyombo Foundation as his nonprofit beneficiary of choice. The Suns organization will match this contribution. Basketball Africa League's Nile Conference Games - April 13 Games Recap (Cobra Sport (South Sudan) vs. BC Espoir Fukash (DRC) | Kiir, Wang lead Ruthless over Espoir Fukash to improve 2-1 | Access Multimedia Content | CAIRO, Egypt, April 14, 2022/ -- Going down 0-3 in the Nile Conference was never an option for Cobra Sports who trounced Espoir Fukash 108-82 on Wednesday night in Cairo. The win boosted Cobra Sports’ aspirations to stay in contention for a Basketball Africa League (BAL) playoffs berth in Many in Kigali. The South Sudan champions stepped on the floor with a sense of urgency. They moved the ball at such high pace in the opening quarter that they took shots in less than 20 seconds. Those shots came in different ways and forms: from pull-up shots, floaters, fast-breaks or even pick-and-rolls. Cobra were on a mission for their first BAL win.24 seconds was the longest Espoir Fukash led in the game. The Kinshasa-based team scored first through a fadeaway shot by Rolly Fula, but Manyan Kiir seemed to have taken it personally and responded with lay-up that was followed by a free throw. Kiir’s three-point play set the tone for Cobra Sports who went on to lead by as many as 14 points in the first 10 minutes of the game. Kiir was Cobra’s propulsor in that moment of the game, and, by the end of the opening quarter he was the only player to score in double figures with his 12 points. With Cobra in total control of the game, the 24-year-old forward had a breather in the second quarter, contributing just two more points in four minutes. Kiir, who played collegiate basketball for four schools – New Mexico State University, Central Baptism College, University of South Florida and Louisiana State University – finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds, Padiet Wang added 24 points, Nyang Wek came off the bench ton contribute 18 points and Jared Harrington added 14 points for Cobra Sports. Kiir later talked about the win. “We don’t want to go home. We had to come out very aggressive and make a statement from the start of the game. I wanted to emphasise a lot of energy and get us going,” he said. There was no better way to exemplify Cobra Sports’ sense of urgency than the 58-38 halftime lead. They scored more points in 20 minutes on Wednesday than they had in the 92-56 defeat to Petro de Luanda 24 hours earlier. Cheered by a group of South Sudanese fans inside the arena, Cobra looked a totally different team from their previous two games and Fukash couldn’t keep up with the Juba-based team’s rhythm. “We love them. They are behind us. They are the best supporters in the world, and I stand by that hundred percent,” Wang pointed out. He added: “We knew coming to this game, this was the most important for us. We had to win this game. Now the next one is also the most important game.” Meanwhile, Espoir Fukash head coach Raven Khonde explained the reasons behind his team’s defeat. He said: “One of the reasons to this defeat was the fact that defensively our team still has some lapses. We allowed too many three points. These are things that need to fix. Fukash dropped to 0-2 while Cobra improved to 1-2. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Basketball Africa League (BAL). SOURCE Basketball Africa League (BAL)

The South African champions were on the ropes when a cold-blooded Evans Ganapamo hit a three-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to lift Cape Town Tigers to a 73-70 victory against FAP. It was Cape Town’s first Basketball Africa League (BAL) win in three games, and it couldn’t have come at the right time. A defeat to FAP would have seriously compromised Cape Town’s chances of fighting for one of the four tickets on offer for the BAL playoffs in May in Kigali. But Ganapamo and Co. weren’t prepared to go down easily. FAP led for most of the time, and with Tigers’ starters Billy Preston and Myck Kabongo off the game due to fouls limit midway through the last quarter, Relton Booysen’s team seemed destined to their third straight defeat, but against all the odds, it was a bench player who became one of the heroes of the night. Ben Myburgh didn’t score a single point in the first three quarters, but when the Tigers needed him most he hit three critical three-pointers in the fourth quarter that completely changed the narrative of the game. Myburgh hit a three-pointer with 38 seconds that tied the game at 70-all, forcing FAP to call a timeout. As the Cameroonian champions tried to close the game out with a designed play, they turned the ball over, Jamel Artis moved the ball forward, found Ganapamo, who calmly sealed the victory. Myburgh was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc to finish with nine points. Ganapamo finished with a game-high of 24 points, Kabongo added 9 points, 12 assists and 6 rebounds, and Artis delivered a 17-point performance to help Cape Town Tigers improve to 1-2. “It’s my job to bring energy onto to the court, and that’s what I did,” Myburgh said to BAL.nba.com. When asked if he ever considered seeing his team going down 0-3, he didn’t hesitate: “No. I have complete faith and trust in these guys. We just needed to stay as a team. We had a couple of tough games, but our energy was good throughout the whole time. We stuck together. Our mindset coming to the game was ‘we got to get the win. No excuses, it was as simple as that.” Cedric Kenfack led the way for FAP with 16 points, four others – Brice Bidias, Etiene Toko, and Alexis Wangmene – scored in double figures, combining for 30 FAP points, but the Yaounde based team had to settled to a 1-1 mark with three games left. “We played well. We lost to a great Cape Town Tigers team. We need to get the right motivation for the rest of the tournament,” admitted Wangmene. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Basketball Africa League (BAL).
