NFL Expands Way To Play Initiative Fueled by Gatorade

The NFL has partnered with Gatorade to expand the Way to Play Initiative. The NFL Way to Play Awards fueled by Gatorade highlights proper playing technique to protect players from unnecessary risk and fosters culture change across all levels of the sport. For the fifth year, the NFL WAY TO PLAY AWARD will recognize the excellence demonstrated by NFL players who exemplify proper technique to make impactful plays. Each recipient of the Way to Play Award will receive a $5,000 equipment grant through USA Football to be awarded to the local youth or high school football program of the player's choosing. "The Way to Play Award recognizes players for using proper techniques on the field which protect players from unnecessary risk," said TROY VINCENT, NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations. "This award also benefits youth and high school football; incentivizes strong fundamental playing techniques; and demonstrates best practices." The NFL Football Operations department will select the top nominees for the award, recognizing current NFL players. The expert panel consists of MERRIL HOGE, RONNIE LOTT, WILLIE MCGINEST, ORLANDO PACE, MICHAEL ROBINSON and BOBBY TAYLOR. The recipient will be announced on NFL Network's Good Morning Football every Thursday morning. In partnership with Hudl and in its fourth year, the NFL WAY TO PLAY HIGH SCHOOL AWARD will honor one high school football player weekly for demonstrating exceptional in-game playing technique. The high school award recipient will be announced on NFL Network each Thursday morning, and the school of each honoree will receive either a $3,000 equipment grant through USA Football or MVP Robotics' Mobile Virtual Player. The NFL has created several videos NFL head coaches, current players and NFL Legends to assist in educating coaches and players. The videos provide coaching points of emphasis to execute proper technique and are to be used as educational tools. Global Flag Football Ambassadors Revealed Global ambassador team to champion growth of flag football worldwide Russell Wilson, Cooper Kupp, Dak Prescott among superstar ambassadors The National Football League (NFL) and the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) today announced the first team of Global Flag Football Ambassadors to champion, amplify and support the long-term growth of the game worldwide. Prominent athletes Russell Wilson, Cooper Kupp and Dak Prescott lead an all-star team of men and women, including current American football players, Legends, and coaches as ambassadors who will work together to further raise the profile and promote the unique values of one of the world’s fastest growing sports. The Flag Football Ambassadors team will support the combined global efforts of the NFL and IFAF to increase awareness, interest, and participation in flag football internationally and drive forward the development of the game. The 56 Super Bowl winners have a 45-10-1 record in the Kickoff Weekend games of their title seasons. The Super Bowl LVI champion LOS ANGELES RAMS, who host the BUFFALO BILLS in the league’s annual primetime Kickoff Game on Thursday (8:20 PM ET, NBC), have won their last five Kickoff Weekend games, the longest active streak in the NFC. Last year marked the sixth time in the last seven seasons the eventual Super Bowl winner won the opening game of its championship season.  The KANSAS CITY CHIEFS, who have appeared in four consecutive AFC Championship Games, travel to play the ARIZONA CARDINALS in Week 1 (4:25 pm ET, CBS), a matchup of two 2021 playoff teams. Kansas City has won its past seven Kickoff Weekend games, the longest active streak in the NFL. Since 2002, when the NFL expanded to 32 clubs, teams that are victorious in their season-openers are more than twice as likely to reach the playoffs than those that lose an opening game.  Of the 319 teams that won openers…166 went to the playoffs (112 won division titles). Of the 317 teams that lost openers…78 went to the playoffs (48 won division titles). Note: There are a different number of winning and losing teams in season-opening games due to the inclusion of 2017 Week 2 victories by Miami and Tampa Bay, which was the season-opener for each team (their Week 1 meeting was postponed due to Hurricane Irma). In 2021, the 14 playoff teams compiled a 9-5 record on Kickoff Weekend.   -- NFL -- STARTING STREAKS: The Rams and Chiefs aren’t the only teams that have excelled in openers. Below is a sampling of other notable active NFL Kickoff Weekend milestones and streaks: Four other teams – the LAS VEGAS RAIDERS, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS and SEATTLE SEAHAWKS – have won each of their past three season-opening games. The Raiders visit the Chargers to open the 2022 season (4:25 PM ET, CBS). The reigning NFC North division champion GREEN BAY PACKERS open their season on the road against the MINNESOTA VIKINGS (4:25 PM ET, FOX). The Packers have won 58 games on Kickoff Weekend, the most in the NFL. The CHICAGO BEARS, who rank second with 55 wins in season-opening games, host the SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS in Week 1 (1:00 PM ET, FOX). The BALTIMORE RAVENS, who travel to play the NEW YORK JETS on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS), are 5-1 in Kickoff Weekend games since 2016 and have outscored their opponents 204-59 in that span. -- NFL -- START ME UP: Some players have excelled in openers. Below is a sampling of notable individual performances on NFL Kickoff Weekend: Tampa Bay quarterback TOM BRADY has 43 touchdown passes in 19 career Kickoff Weekend games, the most Week 1 touchdown passes in NFL history. He also has 5,311 passing yards on Kickoff Weekend, trailing only DREW BREES (5,566 passing yards) for the most all-time. Brady is expected to become the first quarterback ever to make 20 career starts on Kickoff Weekend, surpassing Brees (19). Baltimore quarterback LAMAR JACKSON has compiled a 3-0 record as a starter and has nine touchdown passes and no interceptions for a 145.4 passer rating in four Kickoff Weekend appearances, the highest passer rating ever by a quarterback on Kickoff Weekend (minimum 75 pass attempts). In four Week 1 starts, Kansas City quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES is 4-0 with 13 touchdown passes and no interceptions for a 133.7 rating, the second-highest rating ever in Week 1 games (minimum 75 pass attempts). Tampa Bay wide receiver JULIO JONES has 1,030 receiving yards in 11 career Kickoff Weekend games and is one of 11 players in league history with at least 1,000 career receiving yards in season-openers. If Jones records at least 70 receiving yards on Sunday Night Football at Dallas in his Buccaneers debut (8:20 PM ET, NBC), he will become the sixth player to reach 1,100 career receiving yards on Kickoff Weekend. Jones also has 70 career receptions in Week 1 and can become the ninth player in league history to reach 75 career receptions on Kickoff Weekend. Last year on Kickoff Weekend, defensive end CHANDLER JONES recorded five sacks and two forced fumbles, becoming the third player to post at least five sacks in a Week 1 game since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic. In 10 career games on Kickoff Weekend, Jones – now with the Las Vegas Raiders – has 11 sacks, tied with Baltimore linebacker JUSTIN HOUSTON and two others for the sixth-most on Kickoff Weekend since 1982. If either Jones or Houston records at least two sacks on Sunday, they would surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer LAWRENCE TAYLOR (12.5 sacks in 12 games) for the fourth-most sacks in Week 1 contests since 1982.  -- NFL -- HISTORY-MAKING DEBUT: Indianapolis quarterback MATT RYAN will be making his Colts debut when the team travels to play Houston on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). He enters the season ranking eighth in league history with 59,735 passing yards and needs 265 passing yards on Kickoff Weekend to become the second-fastest player ever (223 games) to reach 60,000 career passing yards. NFL Teams Up with Renowned Artist and Activist Ruben Rojas to Encourage Fans to Choose Love ​Rojas' signature "Love" sculptures will debut at stadiums for Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams, celebrating Kickoff and unifying two coasts for NFL season NEW YORK, September 7, 2022 —  The NFL announced today a partnership with Colombian-American artist Ruben Rojas to spread a clear message of love this football season. In honor of the 2022 Kickoff game between the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills, Rojas created two signature "Love" sculptures that will be placed in both cities, unifying the two coasts for the season.  The Los Angeles sculpture will be unveiled at SoFi Stadium for the Los Angeles Rams vs Buffalo Bills Kickoff game on September 8, while the Buffalo piece will debut in front of Highmark Stadium the week leading into the club's Home Opener on September 19. With paint schemes that are unique to the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills, each "Love" sculpture is delicately hand crafted from sheets of aluminum. Using techniques such as laser cutting, manual molding, welding and sanding, the ten-foot sculptures optically look free floating, as Rojas wanted to highlight the power of love and how it can stand freely on its own. "Love is a noun, a verb and a way of life, and I want to remind people how important it is to wake up every day and choose love," said Ruben Rojas. The NFL first met Rojas this past February at Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. After seeing a commissioned piece he made during a Super Bowl week event and learning more about the artist's inspiring life mission and unique backstory, the NFL set out to collaborate with Rojas for the upcoming season to create and display pieces that encourage love and unity. With an uptick in hate crimes and gun violence around the country, the league and Rojas' message of love and unity to kick off the start of the season is intentional. After a targeted attack against the Black community in Buffalo earlier this year, the NFL Foundation and the Buffalo Bills Foundation donated a combined $400,000 to charities benefiting the city's East Side community. During Thursday's Kickoff game, players from both the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams will wear helmets featuring "Choose Love" as part of the league's social justice helmet decal messaging this season, which will also include other phrases such as "End Racism," "Stop Hate" and "Inspire Change" among others. "Ruben's artwork truly embodies the message echoed across the NFL family of 'Choose Love' in a time when it's so incredibly needed. We're proud to have these pieces displayed during Kickoff week," said Anna Isaacson, NFL SVP of Social Responsibility. "Through our work in supporting and uplifting communities across the country, including Los Angeles and Buffalo, our goal is to encourage fans to join the NFL family in our mission to eliminate hate and come together to support those who need it most." To celebrate the two "Love" sculptures, the league created two pieces of video content on the partnership with Rojas and the powerful message his pieces convey. The first is a :60 spot from NFL Emmy Award winning Series NFL360, which features narration from Sterling K. Brown and visuals of both the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills supporting their communities. It will run in SoFi stadium and air right before the Lift Every Voice and Sing performance on NBC on September 8. The second piece of content is a five-minute profile that will air on NFL Network's NFL Now on the same day and highlight the power of love and football as a means of bringing people together. In the film, Rojas interviews Buffalo Bills' quarterback Josh Allen and Los Angeles Rams' cornerback Jalen Ramsey on what choosing love means to them. In 2021, 34 regular-season games were decided by a game-winning score on the final play, the most ever in a single year. The encore featured all four Divisional playoff games decided on the final play, and both conference championships as well as the Super Bowl each decided by three points. This week marks the beginning of a new story. After an action-packed offseason, the path to State Farm Stadium and Super Bowl LVII in Arizona begins Thursday when the NFL kicks off its 103rd year of competition. The starting 11 entering Week 1… 1. BILLS, RAMS TO CHRISTEN 2022 SEASON: Buffalo quarterback JOSH ALLEN returns to his native state when the BUFFALO BILLS begin the season against the defending Super Bowl champion LOS ANGELES RAMS on Thursday (8:20 PM ET, NBC). Allen, who has guided the Bills to consecutive AFC East titles, is 3-1 against teams from the NFC West, including a win in California over the 49ers in 2020. Meanwhile, the Rams’ SEAN MCVAY has won each of his five season-opening games as a head coach (2017-21). The last head coach to win his first six season-openers was MIKE SHANAHAN (1988-89, 1995-98). The two clubs met in the annual kickoff game last season, with Tampa Bay defeating Dallas, 31-29. TOM BRADY (32 completions) and DAK PRESCOTT (42 completions, most ever in a Week 1 game) combined to complete 74 passes, the most in a single game in NFL history. 6. STREAK SPEAK: The KANSAS CITY CHIEFS have opened each of the past seven seasons (2015-21) with a victory, the NFL’s longest active Week 1 winning streak. With a win on Sunday at Arizona (4:25 PM ET, CBS), Kansas City will tie Pittsburgh (eight, 2003-10) for the league’s fourth-longest season-opening winning streak since 1981, when the Cowboys established the NFL record of 17 consecutive Week 1 victories (1965-81). ARIZONA, meanwhile, has won four consecutive home games against head coach ANDY REID (regular-season wins in 2005, 2012 and 2014 as well as the 2008 NFC Championship Game). In Miami on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS), Dolphins head coach MIKE MCDANIEL makes his NFL debut at age 39, the same age as BILL BELICHICK at the time of his first game as an NFL head coach, in 1991. The Dolphins have three straight wins over New England and with a victory would have their longest winning streak against the Patriots since a five-game stretch from 1999-2001. 7. DID YOU KNOW?: Teams with quarterback TOM BRADY have won seven Super Bowls and in four of those seven seasons (New England in 2001, 2003 and 2014; Tampa Bay in 2020), Brady’s teams lost their Week 1 games. 8. UNDER-THE-RADAR STORYLINE: Houston quarterback DAVIS MILLS was in fourth grade at Mason Elementary School in Duluth, Ga., when MATT RYAN made his NFL debut for the Falcons in 2008. On Sunday, Mills and the Houston Texans will meet Ryan and his new team, the Indianapolis Colts (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Last season, Mills ranked second among qualified rookie passers in rating (88.8), touchdown passes (16) and completion percentage (66.8) and third in passing yards (2,664). Chase trained with Pittsburgh running back NAJEE HARRIS prior to the players’ first-round selections in the 2021 NFL Draft and this week they square off for the fourth time in their combined college and NFL careers. Instituted in 2017, the IPP program aims to provide elite international athletes the opportunity to compete at the NFL level, improve their skills, and ultimately earn a spot on an NFL roster. Following the International Combine, a select number of athletes who meet specific performance requirements and display the potential to play in the NFL, will be invited to train in the United States for three months. This group will be reduced yet again following the training phase in the US and a select number will be allocated to NFL clubs for the 2023 season. The International Combine is the first step in the process towards participation in the IPP program that has helped players such as EFE OBADA (UK/Washington Commanders), JAKOB JOHNSON (Germany/Las Vegas Raiders) and JORDAN MAILATA (Australia/Philadelphia Eagles) earn an NFL roster spot. This year MARCEL DABO (Germany/Indianapolis Colts), ADEDAYO ODELEYE (United Kingdom/Houston Texans) THOMAS ODUKOYA (Netherlands/Tennessee Titans) and AYO OYELOLA (United Kingdom/Jacksonville Jaguars) will join the practice squads of their AFC South teams. The 2022 International Combine will be the fourth iteration, after one in Australia in 2018 and in Germany in 2019. The NFL conducted a Combine in Mexico in October of 2021 for athletes unable to make it to London due to travel restrictions. NFL TO HOST COMMUNITY EVENTS ACROSS LOS ANGELES THROUGHOUT 2022 KICKOFF WEEK ​In the lead-up to the Los Angeles Rams – Buffalo Bills Kickoff game in Los Angeles on Thursday, September 8, the NFL will host a series of community and service events to celebrate the start of the league's long-awaited 2022 season. By partnering with Special Olympics athletes, paying homage to our military veterans, and community greening projects, the NFL family will unite to strengthen the community by leaving a lasting, positive impact on Los Angeles and its surrounding areas. In addition to events throughout the community, the NFL Foundation is pleased to provide support to Rainbow Labs, an LA-based LGBTQ Youth Serving organization and Jenesse Center, a Domestic Violence Intervention/Prevention programs. In celebration of Kickoff week, both organizations will receive grants in the amount of $10,000 to aid in the work to help survivors and their families. The sections include:   Kickoff 2022 The Teams By The Numbers Strengthening The Pipeline International NFL NFL & Social Responsibility Player Health & Safety 2021 was one of the most competitive seasons in league annals and was the first year of an enhanced season structure which featured each team playing 17 regular-season games. The 2022 season will be filled with memorable moments, as young players emerge, familiar faces continue their climb up the record books and teams vie to make their mark in the postseason. Every team enters the season with hope and a trip to Arizona for Super Bowl LVII in mind. Below are a few reasons why: Eighteen teams remained in Super Bowl contention on the final day of the 2021 regular season, tied for the most such teams since 2006 (20). Four teams clinched a division title after not winning their division last year (Cincinnati, Dallas, the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay) and at least two teams have won their divisions the season aftermissing the playoffs in 18 of the past 19 years. Cincinnati clinched the AFC North after finishing in last place in the division in 2020 and in 17 of the past 19 seasons, at least one team finished in first place in their division the season after finishing in last or tied for last. Seven teams clinched playoff berths after missing the postseason in 2020 (Arizona, Cincinnati, Dallas, Las Vegas, New England, Philadelphia and San Francisco) and since 1990 – a streak of 32 consecutive seasons – at least four teams have qualified for the playoffs in every season that were not in the postseason the year before. There were 21 overtime games last season, including three in Week 18 which featured teams winning in overtime to qualify for the postseason (Las Vegas, Pittsburgh and San Francisco), marking the first time since 1993 that multiple playoff teams won in overtime in the final week of the season.   The competitiveness of the 2021 regular season fed into one of the most exciting and dramatic postseasons to date. The Los Angeles Rams won Super Bowl LVI and for a 17th consecutive season, the NFL has a new Super Bowl champion, extending the longest streak without a repeat winner in league history. Only eight teams have repeated as champions since the first Super Bowl in 1967, with the 2004 Patriots (Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX) being the last team to accomplish the feat. It also marked the second-consecutive season in which a team won the Super Bowl in their home stadium, after Tampa Bay also did so in Super Bowl LV. From the Divisional Playoffs through Super Bowl LVI, six of the seven games were decided by exactly three points. Green Bay quarterback AARON RODGERS, who ranks fifth all-time in touchdown passes (449) and 10th in passing yards (55,360), can become the first player ever to win three consecutive Most Valuable Player awards. Indianapolis quarterback MATT RYAN (59,735 passing yards and 367 touchdown passes) can become the eighth quarterback ever with 60,000 passing yards and ninth quarterback all-time with 400 touchdown passes. Tennessee running back DERRICK HENRY needs 10 rushing touchdowns to become the fifth running back all-time with at least 10 rushing touchdowns in five consecutive seasons. Tampa Bay wide receiver MIKE EVANS needs 1,000 receiving yards to become the first player with at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first nine seasons in NFL history. The campaign comically compares past perceptions of football with what the game is like for kids today while promoting registration for youth flag and tackle football. Created by 72andSunny, the campaign comprises three short films – "Conditioning," "Sheriff" and "Respect"  – feature the Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks alongside young flag and tackle football players. In each spot, the past perceptions of football – characterized as Peyton's era, which was all about the grind, toughness and a "blood, sweat and tears" mentality – contrast with the present emphasis on creativity, inclusivity, self-expression, having fun and playing loose – embodied by Eli. Specifically, Peyton "The Sheriff" Manning stars as a fictitious Official NFL Ambassador to Youth Football, teaching kids the game the old school way, while Eli plays the role of his way cooler younger brother. With help from the kids, Eli teaches Peyton that he may know a lot about football but understands little about "the youths" today. A champion of youth football throughout his career, Peyton was a true creative partner in the "Play Football" campaign. He fed into the creative development process prior to production and throughout filming, always emphasizing the importance of growing the next generation of players. Peyton's son even has a cameo in the campaign to literally connect the past and the future within the Manning family. "Growing up in New Orleans and watching my dad play for the Saints, I have always been a fan of the game of football," said NFL Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. "Throughout my many years playing, I enjoyed everything that I learned from the sport, and I want to share that with as many people as possible, especially young players.
