MIAMI’S TYLER HERRO WINS
2021-22 KIA NBA SIXTH MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD
NEW YORK, May 3, 2022 – Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro has been named the 2021-22 Kia NBA Sixth Man of the Year for his contributions in a reserve role, the NBA announced today. This is the first Sixth Man honor for Herro, who becomes the first player to win the annual award with the Heat.
Herro received 488 total points (96 first-place votes) from a global panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters. Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love finished in second place with 214 points (three first-place votes). Phoenix Suns forward Cam Johnson finished in third place with 128 points (one first-place vote).
Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote. To be eligible for the Kia NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award, a player had to have come off the bench in more games than he started.
In his third NBA season, Herro averaged 20.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 32.6 minutes in 66 games (10 starts). His scoring average of 20.8 points as a reserve was the highest in the NBA. He became the fifth player to average at least 20.0 points off the bench (minimum 50 games as a reserve) since starts began being tracked in the 1970-71 season, joining Thurl Bailey (1987-88), Eddie Johnson (1988-89), Ricky Pierce (1989-90, 1990-91) and Lou Williams (2017-18, 2018-19).
Herro’s eight 30-point games off the bench were tied for the third most since the 1970-71 season and his 20 25-point games were tied for the fourth most. He ranked 20th in the NBA in free throw percentage (86.8), 21st in points per game, 26th in three-point field goal percentage (39.9) and 32nd in three-pointers made (175).
Setting a single-season franchise record with 1,162 points off the bench, Herro helped the Heat finish with a 53-29 record and earn the top seed in the Eastern Conference for the 2022 NBA Playoffs presented by Google Pixel. Miami is currently facing the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, with Game 2 to be played on Wednesday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT.
Herro, 22, the 13th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, has averaged 16.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 175 games over three seasons with the Heat. In the 2019-20 season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and set a Miami single-game playoff rookie scoring record with 37 points against the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Herro will be presented with a special edition 75th Anniversary commemorative trophy today in celebration of the honor, gifted in addition to the Kia NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award trophy, which he will receive later. The commemorative trophy, composed of a solid crystal basketball, features the NBA 75 logo 3D laser etched and suspended within its center.

Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff Joins ESPN as Studio Analyst for Remainder of Postseason
The first-round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs was the most-watched on ESPN since 2014, according to Nielsen. The eight games on ESPN averaged 3,346,000 viewers, and were up 28 percent from 2021 and up 69 percent from 2020. It now ranks as the third-most watched first-round of the NBA Playoffs on ESPN ever, dating back to 2003.
The Golden State Warriors victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals on ABC averaged 7,714,000 viewers and peaked with 10,195,000 viewers at 6:15 p.m. ET. It was ABC’s most-watched Conference Semifinals game in 11 years, dating back to 2011 (Los Angeles Lakers vs. Dallas Mavericks). Viewership for Game 1 was up 97 percent from last year’s ABC Conference Semifinals average.
Additionally, the Milwaukee Bucks win over the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Semifinals series averaged 5,370,000 viewers on Sunday, peaking with 7,148,000 viewers at 3:30 p.m. This was up 37 percent from last year’s second-round average. The doubleheader combined for an average of 6,580,000 viewers, up 68 percent from last year’s second-round.
J.B. Bickerstaff to provide postseason analysis
Cleveland Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has joined ESPN as a studio analyst for the remainder of the 2022 postseason. Bickerstaff will regularly provide insights and analysis on ESPN daytime studio shows, including NBA Today, Get Up and SportsCenter. Bickerstaff makes his debut today, Tuesday, May 3.

Selected by fans and an NBA executive panel, the seasonlong winner will be announced during the postseason.
The seasonlong award honors a player’s continued commitment to positively impact his community through sustained efforts and difference-making work over the course of the season. The winner will receive the award during a virtual presentation with team, league and Kaiser Permanente officials, and a $75,000 donation from the NBA and Kaiser Permanente will be made on his behalf to an organization of his choosing to commemorate the league’s 75th Anniversary Season.
Fans can now vote for their preferred seasonlong award nominee via Jebbit, a digital experience platform that captures zero party data, where they can view and select videos highlighting each player’s impact. They are also able to vote on Twitter by using #NBACommunityAssist and a player’s handle or #PlayerFirstNameLastName (e.g., #DavidRobinson). Votes cast via Jebbit then reposted on Twitter will count as two separate votes and retweets will also be counted.
The 10 nominees include the offseason winner, six monthly winners and three additional players selected by the NBA for their exceptional community work. The NBA Cares Community Assist Award presented by Kaiser Permanente recognizes an NBA player each month who best reflects the passion that the league and its players share for giving back to their communities, and honors the standard set by NBA legend David Robinson, who improved the community piece by piece. WNBA UPDATE ON BRITTNEY GRINER IN ADVANCE OF TIP OF 2022 SEASON

NEW YORK, May 3, 2022 – The WNBA today announced plans to acknowledge the importance of Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner to the league. During the 2022 season, which tips off on Friday, May 6, Griner’s initials and jersey number (42) will be featured along the sideline of all 12 WNBA courts.
“As we begin the 2022 season, we are keeping Brittney at the forefront of what we do through the game of basketball and in the community,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. “We continue to work on bringing Brittney home and are appreciative of the support the community has shown BG and her family during this extraordinarily challenging time.”

The league also announced today that the Phoenix Mercury have been granted both roster and salary cap relief so that it can carry a replacement player until Griner, who will be paid her full salary, returns home and is ready to get back on the court.
As previously announced by the Mercury, philanthropic initiatives recognizing Griner and modeled after her contributions to the Phoenix community will take place across the WNBA during tip-off weekend into the 2022 season. Every WNBA market will support BG’s Heart and Sole Shoe Drive, which is in partnership with the Phoenix Rescue Mission. Griner founded the initiative in 2016 to support the homeless population.
“In conjunction with the league, the other 11 teams, and those closest to BG, we will work to keep her top-of-mind as we tip the 2022 season,” said Jim Pitman, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Phoenix Mercury. “While we await her return, our main concern remains for her safety and well-being. NBA NAMES JOE DUMARS EVP, HEAD OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS
NEW YORK, May 2, 2022 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) announced today that Joe Dumars, a Hall of Fame player, distinguished team executive and NBA champion with more than 30 years of experience in the league, has been appointed Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations. Dumars will begin with the league office on May 9 and report to Byron Spruell, President, League Operations.
In his new role, Dumars will oversee all Basketball Operations matters for the NBA, including the development of playing rules and interpretations, conduct and discipline, and policies and procedures relating to the operation of games. He will engage with players, coaches, team executives, officials and other key stakeholders to sustain the highest level of play and competition. Dumars will also lead the overall talent strategy for Basketball Operations and reinforce a culture of inclusivity and innovation.
“Joe’s extensive track record of accomplishment as an NBA player and team executive and the leadership and expertise that he has demonstrated in various roles make him a natural fit to drive efforts to further enhance the game,” said Spruell. “As a respected longtime member of the NBA family, Joe has developed strong relationships across the league that will set the foundation for success in his new position.”
“My life has centered on the NBA for nearly 40 years, which makes the opportunity to serve the entire league incredibly exciting and rewarding,” said Dumars. “I’m looking forward to using my skills and experience to collaborate with all 30 teams on ways to shape the future direction of the league and help the game continue to evolve.”
The NBA Sportsmanship Award is named for Dumars, with the Joe Dumars Trophy presented annually to the NBA player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court. Dumars was the inaugural winner of the NBA Sportsmanship Award (1995-96 season). As a player, he also received the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for his outstanding service and dedication to the community.
Dumars joins the league office after working three seasons with the Sacramento Kings, the last two as Chief Strategy Officer. In his most recent position, he developed and implemented strategy across the organization’s entire portfolio of activities, including business, basketball, new ventures, entertainment and real estate.
Dumars joined the Pistons’ front office after a decorated 14-year playing career in the NBA, all with Detroit, which selected him in the first round (18th overall pick) of the 1985 NBA Draft. A six-time NBA All-Star selection and three-time All-NBA Team honoree, Dumars helped the Pistons win back-to-back NBA championships in the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons and was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1989 NBA Finals. He is the franchise leader in games played.
One of the top all-around guards of his era, Dumars averaged at least 20 points per game three times and was selected to the NBA All-Defensive Team five times. In international competition, Dumars won a gold medal with USA Basketball at the 1994 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
In addition to his success as an NBA player and executive, Dumars served as President of Basketball Division for Independent Sports & Entertainment (ISE), an integrated sports, media, entertainment and management company, from 2017-19. He also founded the automotive supply company Detroit Technologies Inc. and Joe Dumars Fieldhouse, an indoor sports and entertainment complex with two locations in the Detroit area.
A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Dumars holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from McNeese State University, where he had a legendary basketball career as a four-time selection to the All-Southland Conference First Team. Recognized as the Southland Conference’s 1980s Player of the Decade, Dumars is a member of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
PHOENIX SUNS FINED
NEW YORK, April 30, 2022 – The NBA today announced the Phoenix Suns have been fined $25,000 for violating league injury reporting rules. The team failed to disclose guard Devin Booker’s participation status in an accurate and timely manner prior to Game 6 of their first-round playoff series vs. the New Orleans Pelicans on April 28 at Smoothie King Center.
MIAMI’S MARKIEFF MORRIS FINED
NEW YORK, April 28, 2022 – Miami Heat forward Markieff Morris has been fined $25,000 for interfering with live game play while on the bench, in violation of league rules, it was announced today by Byron Spruell, President, League Operations.
Morris, who was not in the game at the time, grabbed and held Atlanta Hawks guard De’Andre Hunter out of bounds, which prevented Hunter from completely reestablishing himself inbounds as he caught a pass from a teammate. Morris received an unsportsmanlike technical foul for his actions. The incident occurred with 7:06 remaining in the third quarter in Miami’s 97-94 win over the Hawks in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series on April 26 at FTX Arena.

JIMMY BUTLER AND MIAMI HEAT FINED
NEW YORK, April 28, 2022 – Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler has been fined $15,000 for making an obscene gesture, it was announced today by Byron Spruell, President, League Operations. The Heat organization has also been fined $15,000 for posting the act on social media.
The incident, which took place from the team’s bench area, occurred with 1:43 remaining in the second quarter in the Heat’s 97-94 win over the Atlanta Hawks in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series on April 26 at FTX Arena.
NBA ANNOUNCES EARLY ENTRY CANDIDATES FOR

NEW YORK, April 26, 2022 – The National Basketball Association announced today that 283 players -- 247 players from colleges and 36 international players -- have filed as early entry candidates for NBA Draft 2022 presented by State Farm.
Players who have applied for early entry have the right to withdraw their names from consideration for the Draft by notifying the NBA of their decision in writing no later than 5 p.m. ET on Monday, June 13. Under NCAA rules, in order to retain college basketball eligibility, college players who have entered NBA Draft 2022 must withdraw by Wednesday, June 1.

DENVER’S DEMARCUS COUSINS FINED
NEW YORK, April 26, 2022 – Denver Nuggets center DeMarcus Cousins has been fined $15,000 for kicking towels into the spectator stands, it was announced today by Byron Spruell, President, League Operations.
The incident occurred when Cousins returned to the bench following a substitution with 7:27 remaining in the second quarter of the Nuggets’ 126-121 win over the Golden State Warriors in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series on April 24 at Ball Arena.

MILWAUKEE’S JRUE HOLIDAY WINS
2021-22 TWYMAN-STOKES TEAMMATE OF THE YEAR AWARD
NEW YORK, April 26, 2022 – NBA players have selected Milwaukee Bucks guard Jrue Holiday as the recipient of the 2021-22 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award, the NBA announced today.
Presented annually since the 2012-13 season, the award recognizes the player deemed the best teammate based on selfless play, on- and off-court leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment and dedication to team.
This is the second Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award for Holiday, who also earned the honor in the 2019-20 season as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans. He is the first player to win the award more than once.
A panel of league executives selected 12 finalists (six from each conference) for the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award. Current NBA players selected the winner from the list of finalists, with more than 300 players submitting their votes.
In addition to Holiday, the finalists were Chicago Bulls guard-forward DeMar DeRozan, Utah Jazz forward Rudy Gay, Denver Nuggets forward Jeff Green, Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem, Golden State Warriors forward Andre Iguodala, Memphis Grizzlies forward-center Jaren Jackson Jr., Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love, Dallas Mavericks center Boban Marjanović, Phoenix Suns guard Chris Paul, Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet and Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams.
Holiday received 964 points (39 first-place votes) in balloting of NBA players. Marjanović finished in second place with 936 points (48 first-place votes). DeRozan finished in third place with 898 points (34 first-place votes). Players were awarded 10 points for each first-place vote, seven points for each second-place vote, five points for each third-place vote, three points for each fourth-place vote and one point for each fifth-place vote.
Holiday will be presented with a special edition 75th Anniversary commemorative trophy today in celebration of the honor, gifted in addition to the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award trophy, which he will receive later. The commemorative trophy, composed of a solid crystal basketball, features the NBA 75 logo 3D laser etched and suspended within its center.
A 13-year NBA veteran, Holiday was selected by NBA players as the 2020-21 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner last season. He was also a finalist for the inaugural Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award, which was presented in June 2021. In 2020, Holiday and his wife, Lauren, a former player for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, launched the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Justice Impact Fund to address socioeconomic inequalities across several communities.
Holiday, 31, averaged 18.3 points, 6.8 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.61 steals in 32.9 minutes in 67 games this season. Last season, he helped lead Milwaukee to its first NBA championship in 50 years. An NBA All-Star selection in the 2012-13 season, Holiday has been named to the NBA All-Defensive Team three times.
The Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award is named for Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes, whose storied friendship transcended their Hall of Fame accomplishments. Twyman and Stokes were teammates on the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals from 1955-58. In the last game of the 1957-58 regular season, Stokes sustained an injury that led to his falling into a coma days later and becoming permanently paralyzed. He was diagnosed with post-traumatic encephalopathy, a brain injury that damaged his motor-control center. Stokes was supported for the rest of his life by Twyman, who became his legal guardian and advocate.
Twyman helped organize the NBA’s Maurice Stokes Memorial Basketball Game, which raised funds for Stokes’ medical care and, after Stokes’ death in 1970 at age 36, for other players in need. In 2004, after years of lobbying by Twyman, Stokes was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Twyman, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1983, died in 2012.

ABOUT JACK TWYMAN: A Pittsburgh native and collegiate standout at the University of Cincinnati, Twyman earned six NBA All-Star Game selections and two All-NBA Second Team honors in 11 seasons, all spent with the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals. Twyman was runner-up in the scoring race twice, including in 1959-60, when he finished with 2,338 points and averaged a career-high 31.2 points. He retired in 1966 with career averages of 19.2 points and 6.6 rebounds. After his playing career, he worked as a television analyst on NBA games.
ABOUT MAURICE STOKES: A Pittsburgh native like Twyman, Stokes was one of the first Black players to star at the collegiate and professional levels. At 6-7, 250 pounds, he possessed the talent and athleticism to play every position on the court. He led St. Francis (Pa.) University to the Final Four of the 1955 National Invitation Tournament before embarking on his NBA career with the Rochester Royals. Stokes won the 1955-56 NBA Rookie of the Year Award and earned All-Star selections in each of his three NBA seasons before sustaining his career-ending injury.
PHOENIX’S MONTY WILLIAMS FINED
NEW YORK, April 26, 2022 – Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams has been fined $15,000 for public criticism of the officiating, it was announced today by Byron Spruell, President, League Operations.
Williams made his comments to the media following the Suns’ 118-103 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series on April 24 at Smoothie King Center.
