MILWAUKEE BUCKS’ BROOK LOPEZ RECEIVES MARCH NBA CARES COMMUNITY ASSIST AWARD

 

-NBA to donate $10,000 to Milwaukee Public Library Foundation-

 

NEW YORK, April 19, 2023 – The NBA today announced Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez as the NBA Cares Community Assist Award winner for the month of March in recognition of his commitment to supporting youth literacy.  March is National Reading Month and since joining the Bucks in 2018, Lopez has made it his mission to make reading both fun and accessible.  Throughout the season, Lopez has donated roughly $175,000 for books and funding in support of literacy initiatives within Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Lopez’s efforts are paramount in a state where only 39% percent of eighth-grade students are proficient or above in reading, and more specifically, within Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) where only 15% of fourth- and eighth-grade students are proficient or above in reading.  Each month of the regular season, the award recognizes a player who best demonstrates the passion that the league and NBA players share for giving back to their communities. 

 

As part of Lopez’s “Blocks for Books” program, Lopez donates $500 to Next Door for every block he records during the regular season in support of early childhood literacy.  Lopez’s success on the defensive end this season, including a league-leading and career high in blocks (193 total), led him to donate $96,500 to Next Door as part of the program.  Additionally, for the second consecutive year, Lopez partnered with Scholastic Book Fair to bring book fairs to five Milwaukee Public Schools.  All five schools selected – Allen-Field, Bryant, Hayes Bilingual, Kilbourn and Pratt – are Title 1 schools that have never had a Scholastic Book Fair.  Lopez’s contributions allowed each student at all five schools to select and keep five books, totaling close to 10,000 books for more than 2,000 students and roughly $75,000.  Lopez also ensured that the schools were set up to receive Scholastic Dollars so they can purchase new books for the school libraries. 

 

“Reading is a personal passion of mine that both brings me joy and has played a key role in my success,” said Lopez.  “Throughout my career, I have remained committed to supporting youth literacy initiatives because I know firsthand how important this skill is.  Whether on the road or learning new plays, reading has always played a key role in my life.  I want to ensure future generations are able to develop this skill too and fall in love with reading just as I have, especially kids in economically disadvantaged school and communities.”

 

Lopez will be recognized during an on-court ceremony before Game 2 of the Bucks-HEAT game on Wednesday, Apr. 19 at 9 p.m. ET.  Bucks’ President Peter Feigin, Lopez’s fiancé, Hailee Strickland, and his mother, Debby Ledford will present him with the award.  The NBA will donate $10,000 to the Milwaukee Public Library Foundation.

    Los Pacers (21-23) aprovecharon que Doncic no pudo jugar debido a una lastimadura en la espalda, para vencer sin mayores problemas 109-92 a los Dallas Mavericks (23-20). Los Pacers se llevaron el 1er parcial 31-29 liderados por 8 puntos de Malcolm Brogdon. Dallas contó con un tremendo inicio de juego para Kristaps Porzingis con 13 puntos mientras que Tim Hardaway Jr. anotó 9. Los Pacers dominaron 30-19 el 2do parcial a fuerza de bombazos con 7 de los13 que anotaron en 28 intentos en la primera mitad. Pacers ganaron la 1era mitad 61-48. Doug McDermott anotó 9 de sus 12 puntos en el 2do parcial y Edmond Summer anotó 5 de sus 10 puntos. Myles Turner anotó 6 de sus 9 puntos, todos productos de 3 puntos, y dio 3 de sus 7 tapones en el juego y robó dos balones en esa 1era mitad. Turner terminó con 7 rebotes en el juego.

   En la 2da mitad, Dallas, quienes venían de ganar dos juegos consecutivos en la carretera, comenzaron un rally para finalizar el 3er parcial abajo 82-75. Los Mavs ganaron el 3er parcial 27-21 al apretar la defensa, especialmente en la línea de 3 puntos, y contar con 14 puntos de Porzingis. Los Pacers volvieron a descifrar la pobre defensa de los Mavs en el 4to parcial y le anotaron 4 bombazos para llevarse el mismo 27-17, y  por ende el juego 109-92. Los Pacers lanzaron 47-20 de la línea de tres puntos para 43% y 87-38 de tiros de campo para un 44%. La defensa de los Pacers se dejó sentir con 9 robos de balón y 10 tapones. Los Pacers repartieron 26 asistencias. Domantas Sabonis tuvo otro buen juego all-around con 22 puntos, 15 rebotes y 5 asistencias. Fue una delicia verlo manejar el balón y distribuir el juego. Brogdon finalizó con 22 puntos, 6 rebotes y 6 bombazos mientras que T.J. McConnell anotó 8 de sus 10 puntos en el 4to parcial y se robó 3 balones. Caris LeVert aportó 10 puntos.

    Dallas dominó los puntos de la pintura 42-32 y ganó los rebotes 51-49. Dallas soló realizó 17 asistencias vs 15 turnovers y eso es No Bueno! Dallas lanzó 95-39 para un 41% de campo, un miserable 35-8 de la línea de 3 puntos para un 23% y un pobre 14-8 de la línea del tiro libre para un 57%. Porzingis lideró la ofensiva de los Mavs con 31 puntos con 18 rebotes mientras la 2da voz fue Tim Hardaway Jr. con 16 puntos. Josh Richardson anotó 11 y Jalen Brunson 10. La nota chevere fue que el juvenil Josh Green anotó 7. Los Mavs regresan a cancha este sábado en New Orleans.
