Tacleando la NFL: Semana 1 de la NFL

Tacleando la NFL- 1era Semana
Por Daniel “Mr. Clutch” Mercado Castro

CFL AND NFL LAUNCH JOINT FLAG FOOTBALL INITIATIVE
CFL/NFL Flag Football tournament to take place at Grey Cup week in Ottawa, winner to compete in the NFL FLAG Championships during Pro Bowl Week
The Canadian Football League (CFL) and National Football League (NFL) today launched a flag football program that will engage hundreds of kids across the country. The program for Canadian youth will culminate in a national flag football tournament during the week of the 105th Grey Cup presented by Shaw in Ottawa, with the winner travelling to Pro Bowl week in Orlando, FL to participate in the NFL FLAG Championships.
The CFL/NFL Flag Football initiative will teach kids the fundamentals of the game and promote physical activity. Alongside skills development, participants will receive lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship, and other lessons that help them succeed both on and off the field.
"This flag football tournament series is an exciting example of our continued commitment to grow the game," said Glen Johnson, CFL Senior Vice President of Football. "Developing programming for youth football with our partners at the NFL promotes a healthy lifestyle and the continued success of our sport in a fun and safe way."
"We are excited to partner with the CFL on youth initiatives in Canada," added David Thomson, Managing Director, NFL Canada. "Both leagues share the goal of strengthening the interest, awareness and participation in football among Canadians. This is a great opportunity to showcase the talent, dedication and achievements of local flag leagues during the CFL's Grey Cup week in Ottawa and the NFL's Pro Bowl week in Orlando, Florida."
Coed teams of 11-12-year old athletes will take part in nine regional tournaments to be held in CFL cities throughout the fall, coming together for a national tournament during Grey Cup week in the nation's capital. The winner of this tournament will compete in the NFL FLAG Championships during Pro Bowl week next January in Orlando, FL.
Each regional tournament will feature eight teams with a maximum 10 players each. Participants will meet current CFL players, interact with CFL cheer teams and mascots, and enjoy football-themed games and activities alongside their matches in each CFL market. Each regional tournament's victorious team will win a trip to Ottawa to play in the CFL/NFL Flag Football Championship during Grey Cup Week.
Here is the list of the upcoming regional tournaments:
  • Edmonton: Saturday, September 23rd at The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium
  • BC: Saturday, September 30th at W.J. Mouat Secondary in Abbotsford, BC
  • Montreal: Saturday, October 7th at Collège André-Grasset
  • Saskatchewan: Sunday, October 8th at Mosaic Stadium
  • Ottawa: Sunday, October 15th at TD Place Stadium
  • Calgary: Sunday, October 15th at Shouldice Athletic Park
  • Hamilton: Sunday, October 22nd at Tim Hortons Field
  • Winnipeg: Sunday, October 22nd at Investors Group Field
  • Toronto: Saturday, October 28th at Birchmount Stadium
National tournament:
  • Tuesday, November 21st at the University of Ottawa (Gee-Gees Field)
Participants for the program have been selected through CFL member teams and local organizations. More information can be found at CFL.ca/flag. Both the CFL and the NFL will continue to invest in youth football programming and promote increased physical activity.

NFL Foundation to Contribute $1 Million to Hurricane Irma Relief Efforts
The NFL Foundation will contribute $1 million to Hurricane Irma relief efforts to be split evenly between the American Red Cross and the five living former American Presidents' One America Appeal, it was announced today.
Both organizations will address the immediate needs of those impacted throughout Florida and the Florida Keys, while some of the Red Cross funds will support the hardest hit areas in the Caribbean.
The NFL Foundation's donation will match the respective $1 million contributions of the Jacksonville Jaguars to Florida's First Coast Relief Fund, the Miami Dolphins to the AARP Foundation Miami Dolphins Hurricane Irma Relief Fund and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the American Red Cross.
Our thoughts are with the various communities impacted by both Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma during this difficult time. The entire NFL family – including players, teams, and fans – is committed to continuing to support relief efforts.
The NFL encourages fans to text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross Hurricane Relief and to visit oneamericaappeal.org to donate to the fund.

HISTORY IN THE MAKINGNew England quarterback TOM BRADY and New Orleans quarterback DREW BREESwill meet for the third time in their careers when the Saints host the Patriots on Sunday. The game marks the first time in NFL history in which two quarterbacks with at least 10 Pro Bowl selections (Brady, 12; Brees, 10) will face off against each other in the regular season.

CHARACTER PLAYBOOK, POWERED BY EVERFI AND PRESENTED BY
THE NFL AND UNITED WAY, REACHES 88,000 STUDENTS IN FIRST YEAR
Program Expands with New Virtual Classroom Experience
in all 32 NFL Markets and Addition of 360 Schools
Character PlaybookTM, a digital character education program powered by digital learning innovator EVERFI, Inc. and presented by the NFL and United Way, has helped 88,000 middle school students in nearly 30 states learn how to cultivate and maintain healthy relationships in its first year.
Building off this success, the program will expand to 360 more schools and introduce a new virtual classroom experience called Character Playbook LIVE. These interactive events, hosted by NFL teams and United Ways beginning in Week 2 of the regular season, will engage more students in the important conversation of why character matters. NFL players will host live events with their local United Way. For the second year, Verizon will sponsor an additional 220 schools in 11 select markets.
Data compiled by EVERFI during the program's first year indicates that approximately 1,300 teachers helped students complete more than 170,000 hours of learning, which led to increased understanding of key social-emotional topics—a 41 percent increase based on pre- and post-assessment scores.
By the end of the program's first year:
  • 74 percent of students were more likely to believe they deserve to be treated with respect
  • 70 percent raised their expectations about how to treat others
  • 69 percent said the program helped them identify actions they can take to treat people with respect
  • 66 percent better defined the role they can play in resolving conflict
"We are pleased with the positive strides Character Playbook has made on students' understanding of these critical topics and look forward to expanding its impact," said NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL. "Character Playbook is a program for all students, athletes and non-athletes alike, and addresses values we prioritize as a league. EVERFI and United Way, our nonprofit partner for over 40 years, have been instrumental throughout this process and understand the importance of educating students on these issues in an accessible and interactive way."
The data around social-emotional learning indicates a growing need in classrooms. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning found that students who participated in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs saw an 11 percentile point gain in achievement in social and emotional skills, attitudes, behavior and academic performance. Character Playbook is addressing these issues head on and supporting students in building the skills they need to be successful contributors to their communities through improved communication skills, recognizing positive and negative influences, managing their emotions, resolving conflicts and stepping up for one another.
"I was extremely fortunate because I had two parents who, from an early age, instilled in me the importance not only of education, but also strong values and high character," said Arizona Cardinals Wide Receiver LARRY FITZGERALD. "The more exposure I've had to successful and high-achieving people in all walks of life, I've found that those traits are consistent among them. What makes this program so valuable is that it lays the foundation early and provides kids the skills and understanding to develop these qualities that not only benefit them individually, but also the communities they live in. "
"Good character is a critical building block of strong individuals and strong communities," said President and CEO of United Way Worldwide BRIAN GALLAGHER. "By helping young people develop and recognize healthy relationships, Character Playbook is providing our next generation with the tools to succeed. It's another great example of how the NFL and United Way are combining the love of team with a deep commitment to community to make a difference."
Student Testimonial:
"I never thought a program could help me with my social life outside and inside the house. Because I'm a person that gets mad over a little thing. This program helps me learn how to calm myself down with breathing and stuff like that. And I also learned that you have to have the right amount of people that can help build you up instead of tearing you down....this program helped me through a lot of problems."
  • Donald, 8th grader, Brick Avon Academy, NJ
Teacher Testimonial:
"Thanks to Character Playbook, my students learned how to interact with others in a mature and healthy manner, a manner that extends respect to the people they meet."
  • California teacher

DETROIT LIONS (1-0) en NEW YORK GIANTS (0-1) (Lunes, ESPN, 8:30 PM, hora de New York)
FOOTBALL HAS RETURNED & HERE COMES WEEK 2
Chargers host Dolphins as franchise returns to Los Angeles
Falcons open Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday night against Packers
The NFL got back to football last weekend and the season now heads into Week 2.
Everybody wants to get off to a good start as history has shown that teams that are victorious in their season openers are more than twice as likely to reach the playoffs than losers of an opening game. But that doesn’t mean an 0-1 start is impossible to overcome as nearly 25 percent of teams that lost the opener went to the playoffs.
Since 1978 when the NFL went to the 16-game schedule (and excluding the abbreviated season of 1982):
Of the 570 teams which won openers… 297 went to the playoffs (179 won division titles)
Of the 571 teams which lost openers… 137 went to the playoffs (79 won division titles)
(Note: There are a different number of winning and losing teams in season opening games due to the fact that the NFL had 31 teams in each season from 1999 to 2001, which creates an odd number for the total number of results.)
Week 2 kicks off with Thursday Night Football as the Houston Texans visit the Cincinnati Bengals (NFL Network, 8:25 PM ET). The two teams have combined for nine playoff berths since 2011 (Cincinnati, five and Houston, four).
On Sunday afternoon, the Chargers make their return to Los Angeles for the franchise’s first home game in LA since 1960 as the team hosts the Miami Dolphins in their regular-season home opener at StubHub Center (4:05 PM ET, CBS). And, that night in primetime (8:30 PM ET, NBC), the Atlanta Falcons will open their new home – Mercedes-Benz Stadium – when they host the Green Bay Packers in a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Game on Sunday Night Football
Here’s a look at a few interesting storylines entering Week 2:

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (1-0) at KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (1-0) (Sunday, FOX, 1:00 PM ET)

  • Philadelphia quarterback CARSON WENTZ passed for 307 yards and two touchdowns – including a 58-yard TD to wide receiver NELSON AGHOLOR – in the Eagles’ 30-17 win at Washington. Wentz improved to 4-0 in his career as a starter in the month of September with seven touchdown passes, one interception and a 101.8 passer rating.
  • The Eagles sealed the victory over the Redskins when defensive end BRANDON GRAHAMforced a fumble on a sack which defensive tackle FLETCHER COX returned 20 yards for a TD with 1:29 remaining in the game.

  • Kansas City head coach ANDY REID spent 14 seasons (1999-2012) with the Eagles, compiling a team-record 130 regular-season wins and 10 postseason victories while capturing six division titles and making five NFC Championship appearances.
  • In the Kickoff Weekend opener on Thursday night, the Chiefs defeated New England 42-27. Rookie running back KAREEM HUNT amassed 246 scrimmage yards (148 rushing, 98 receiving) – the most ever by a player in his NFL debut – and scored three touchdowns. Kansas City quarterback ALEX SMITH posted a 148.6 passer rating against the Patriots and became the first quarterback to complete at least 80 percent of his passes (80.0) for 350 yards (368) with four touchdowns (four) and no interceptions against the defending Super Bowl champion.

BUFFALO BILLS (1-0) at CAROLINA PANTHERS (1-0) (Sunday, CBS, 1:00 PM ET)

  • Buffalo head coach SEAN MC DERMOTT notched his first career victory as a head coach last week in the Bills’ 21-12 win over the New York Jets. McDermott spent the previous six seasons as Carolina’s defensive coordinator, helping the Panthers win three division titles and advance to Super Bowl 50.

  • In last week’s victory over the Jets, running back LE SEAN MC COY rushed for 110 yards and quarterback TYROD TAYLOR threw two touchdown passes. Taylor and Carolina’s CAM NEWTON are the only players with at least 5,000 passing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns since the start of the 2015 season.

  • The Panthers limited San Francisco to three points and 217 total yards (51 rushing, 166 passing) in Carolina’s 23-3 Week 1 victory at Levi’s Stadium.
  • Carolina quarterback CAM NEWTON threw touchdown passes to wide receiver RUSSELL SHEPARD (40 yards) and running back JONATHAN STEWART (nine) in the win. In his NFL debut, rookie running back CHRISTIAN MC CAFFREY led the team with five receptions and 85 scrimmage yards (47 rushing, 38 receiving).

DALLAS COWBOYS (1-0) at DENVER BRONCOS (1-0) (Sunday, FOX, 4:25 PM ET)

  • Dallas quarterback DAK PRESCOTT passed for 268 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ 19-3 win over the New York Giants. Tight end JASON WITTEN, who had 59 yards and a touchdown, has 11,947 career receiving yards and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer MICHAEL IRVIN (11,904) for the most in franchise history.
  • In the team’s Week 1 victory, the Dallas defense limited the Giants to three points and 233 total yards (35 rushing, 198 passing) while recording three sacks – including two by defensive end DEMARCUS LAWRENCE – and an interception (cornerback ANTHONY BROWN).

  • Denver quarterback TREVOR SIEMIAN threw two touchdown passes – both to wide receiver BENNIE FOWLER III – and rushed for a score in the Broncos’ 24-21 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Kickoff Weekend. Siemian joined Pro Football Hall of Famer JOHN ELWAY and BRIAN GRIESE as the only Broncos quarterbacks to record multiple touchdown passes and a TD run in a Week 1 opener.
  • Broncos defensive end SHELBY HARRIS sealed the victory for Denver by blocking the Chargers’ potential game-tying 44-yard field goal with one second remaining in the game.

GREEN BAY PACKERS (1-0) at ATLANTA FALCONS (1-0) (Sunday, NBC, 8:30 PM ET)

  • This will be the first regular-season NFL game at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The stadium, which will host Super Bowl LIII on February 3, 2019, is expected to have its unique retractable roof open for this game (weather conditions permitting) for the first time.
  • The contest is a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Game which the Falcons won 44-21. Atlanta quarterback MATT RYAN passed for 392 yards and scored five touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) in that game while wide receiver JULIO JONES had nine catches for 180 yards and two TDs.

  • The Packers opened the season with a 17-9 home victory over Seattle. Quarterback AARON RODGERS passed for 311 yards with one touchdown and running back TY MONTGOMERYadded 93 scrimmage yards with a rushing TD.
  • Against the Seahawks, wide receivers RANDALL COBB (nine catches for 85 yards) and JORDY NELSON (seven catches for 79 yards with one TD) combined for 16 catches and 164 yards with one touchdown.

  • The Falcons used a late defensive stand deep in their own territory to hold on for a 23-17 win at Chicago in Week 1. Defensive end BROOKS REED sealed the victory with a sack on fourth down from the Atlanta five-yard line with three seconds remaining in the game.
  • Atlanta’s AUSTIN HOOPER had two catches for 128 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown, the longest TD reception by a tight end in a season opener in NFL history.

DETROIT LIONS (1-0) at NEW YORK GIANTS (0-1) (Monday, ESPN, 8:30 PM ET)

  • The Lions opened the season with a 35-23 win over Arizona as the team rallied from a 17-15 fourth-quarter deficit. Last season, Detroit won eight games when trailing in the fourth quarter, the most by a team in a single season in NFL history.
  • Detroit quarterback MATTHEW STAFFORD passed for 292 yards and four touchdowns in the win over the Cardinals and has 27 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime since 2011, the most by a QB in the NFL over that span. Rookie wide receiver KENNY GOLLADAYhad two touchdown catches in the fourth quarter, including a 45-yarder, in his NFL debut.

  • The Giants have won 50 home openers in franchise history and are one of only four teams all-time with at least 50 victories in home openers.
  • Last week at Dallas, Giants quarterback ELI MANNING started his 200th consecutive game, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer BRETT FAVRE (297) and PEYTON MANNING (208) as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to start at least 200 consecutive games.

NFL FOUNDATION, USA FOOTBALL, GENYOUTH AND FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 EXPAND COMMITMENT TO
YOUTH HEALTH AND WELLNESS THROUGH NFL FLAG-IN-SCHOOLS
Program Provides Underserved Communities with Resources to Get Students Active Through Flag Football
NFL FLAG Kits Distributed to 4,700 New Schools, Reaching 2.5 Million More Students for the 2017-18 School Year
The NFL, USA Football, GENYOUth and Fuel Up to Play 60 announced today the expansion of the NFL FLAG-In-Schools Program, which aims to increase physical activity of youth by providing flag football resources to underserved communities. Since 2014, the partners' efforts have resulted in 4.3 million students becoming more active before, during and after school through NFL FLAG-In-Schools. This year, NFL FLAG Kits will be distributed to an additional 4,700 schools nationwide, reaching approximately 2.6 million new students. The expansion was made possible by a renewed commitment from the NFL Foundation, amounting to nearly $1.5 million.
"Football is a fun and engaging sport that teaches participants valuable life lessons both on and off field. We are excited to expand the NFL FLAG-in-Schools program and offer more kids the opportunity to get involved in the sport and have fun," said NFL Vice President of Youth and High School Football ROMAN OBEN. "This partnership provides much-needed resources to schools throughout the country to sustain their physical activity programs and positively impact students' health and wellness."
NFL-FLAG-in Schools Kits will be provided to 4,700 schools at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year. The kits include footballs, flag belts, kicking tees, posters and a physical education (PE) curriculum designed by SHAPE America for elementary and middle school students, to get active and learn the basics of football in a fun environment.
New this year, digital NFL FLAG-In-Schools training modules, including video-based instructions, will be available free of charge to PE teachers nationwide and provide more educators access to the training. The modules follow a curriculum developed by USA Football and SHAPE America that meets national standards for continuing education. Teachers can access the training modules via the website: http://www.shapeamerica.org.
"Since the introduction of this partnership, and its subsequent expansions, each year we've heard resounding, positive feedback from educators who have received NFL FLAG Kits regarding the effectiveness of this turnkey solution and its ability to inspire both boys and girls to be physically active," said CEO of GENYOUth ALEXIS GLICK. "We heard the national call for more strategies to help kids participate in high-quality physical education and other opportunities to be active before, during and after school, and our partnership to deliver NFL FLAG-In-Schools Kits was our answer to that call."
The program has seen notable success since its inception in 2014. Seventy-one percent of the schools receiving kits are high-need schools: 40% or more of students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Ninety-eight percent of teachers reported using the kits in their PE class with nearly half (47%) also using them after school. Earlier this year, PE teachers who previously received NFL FLAG-In-Schools Kits participated in a Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisors' focus group and reported the following benefits:
  • Participants reported using NFL FLAG-In-Schools Kits in PE class, at recess, in intramurals, in tournaments, before and after school and in Fuel Up to Play 60 events;
  • The program has significantly increased PE teachers' confidence and ability to teach/coach flag football;
  • Participants overwhelmingly felt their FLAG-In-Schools programs were successful - citing student enthusiasm for the game, especially girls' interest in the game, older students' willingness to teach younger students how to play and flag football's increasing popularity over other sports as reasons for the success; and
  • Participants representing a variety of school sizes unanimously reported that all of their PE students participate in FLAG-In-Schools, adding that a sizable amount of interest among students was generated by intramural play and recess play
Additionally, schools report that the program has helped them to increase female students' participation in physical activity at school. In fact, NFL FLAG-In-Schools sparked such an interest in Miami-Dade County Public Schools that the district developed 50 new varsity middle school girls flag leagues with 1,100 girls now playing varsity flag football. This is a key advantage, given a 2016 study by Tufts University School of Medicine and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, which showed that girls are at greater risk than boys of falling short of in-school physical activity recommendations.

SEVEN FROM SUNDAY – KICKOFF WEEKEND

A look at seven statistical highlights from games played at 1:00 p.m. ET and 4:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 10, the first week of the 2017 season.

  • Atlanta tight end AUSTIN HOOPER had two catches for 128 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown reception in the Falcons’ 23-17 win at Chicago. Hooper’s 88-yard touchdown is the longest TD catch by a tight end in a season opener in NFL history

  • Los Angeles Rams cornerback TRUMAINE JOHNSON and safety LAMARCUS JOYNER each had an interception-return touchdown and defensive end MORGAN FOX recorded a safety in the team’s 46-9 win over Indianapolis.

The RAMS are the first team in NFL history to record two interception-return touchdowns and a safety in a season opener.

The Rams’ two interception-return touchdowns are tied for the most ever in a season opener and Los Angeles is the first team to accomplish the feat on Kickoff Weekend since the 2007 Minnesota Vikings (September 9, 2007 vs. Atlanta).

  • The Jacksonville Jaguars, led by defensive ends CALAIS CAMPBELL (four sacks) and DANTE FOWLER, JR. (one sack, 53-yard fumble-return touchdown), defeated Houston 29-7 at NRG Stadium.

The JAGUARS, who had 10 sacks and a defensive touchdown in the contest, are the second team in NFL history with at least 10 sacks and a defensive touchdown in a season-opening game. The Los Angeles Raiders recorded 10 sacks and had a 76-yard interception-return touchdown in the team’s 31-0 victory against the New York Jets on September 8, 1985.

  • Detroit quarterback MATTHEW STAFFORD passed for 292 yards with four touchdowns and one interception for a 113.1 passer rating in the Lions’ 35-23 win over Arizona. Stafford, who led the Lions back from a 17-15 fourth-quarter deficit, has 27 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime since 2011, the most such drives by a quarterback in the NFL over the span

Last year, the Lions won eight games when trailing in the fourth quarter, the most by a team in a single season in NFL history.

  • Cleveland rookie quarterback DE SHONE KIZER passed for 222 yards with a touchdown and rushed for a TD against Pittsburgh in his first career start. Kizer’s start marks the 10th consecutive season a rookie quarterback has started on Kickoff Weekend, the longest streak since at least 1950

  • Pittsburgh rookie linebacker T.J. WATT had two sacks and an interception in the Steelers’ 21-18 win at Cleveland. Watt is the first player to record at least two sacks and an interception in an NFL debut on Kickoff Weekend since sacks became an official statistic in 1982

  • Oakland kicker GIORGIO TAVECCHIO converted all four of his field-goal attempts in the Raiders’ 26-16 victory at Tennessee. Tavecchio, who connected on two 52-yard field goals in the contest, is the first player in league history to make two field goals of at least 50 yards in his NFL debut. He also joins SEBASTIAN JANIKOWSKI as the only players in team history to convert multiple 50-yard field goals in a single game.

JOSH BROWN SUSPENDED SIX GAMES FOR VIOLATION OF NFL’S PERSONAL CONDUCT POLICY
JOSH BROWN SUSPENDED SIX GAMES FOR VIOLATION OF NFL'S PERSONAL CONDUCT POLICY
The NFL notified Josh Brown that he will be suspended for the first six games of the 2017 NFL season for violating the league's Personal Conduct Policy.
In August 2016, Brown was suspended for the first game of the 2016 season after an investigation into an incident on May 22, 2015 with his then wife.
In October 2016, the King County (WA) Sheriff's Office announced publicly that it had closed its investigation in connection with the 2015 incident. As part of its report, however, the Sheriff's Office released a volume of documents from its investigation. These documents, which previously had been withheld from the public and the NFL, contained information regarding a series of other incidents separate from the May 2015 incident.
The league then placed Brown on the Commissioner Exempt list and initiated an investigation into those incidents. Following a comprehensive investigation, which included a review of the documents and interviews with Brown and several other people, the league concluded there was a violation of the Personal Conduct Policy that warranted a six-game suspension.
Brown was advised of this determination and elected to accept the discipline and begin serving the suspension immediately.
