​THURSDAY NIGHT PREVIEW: JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (0-3) AT CINCINNATI BENGALS (2-1) Week 4 of the 2021 NFL season gets underway on Thursday, September 30 (8:20 PM ET, NFL Network) as the Cincinnati Bengals (2-1) host the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-3) in a matchup of the two most recent No. 1 overall picks – Cincinnati’s JOE BURROW (2020 No. 1 pick) and Jacksonville’s TREVOR LAWRENCE (2021). This marks only the second ever quarterback meeting between the two most recent first overall picks. Cleveland’s BAKER MAYFIELD (No. 1 overall in 2018) and Arizona’s KYLER MURRAY in (No. 1 overall in 2019) met in Week 15 of the 2019 season. Thursday will be the 24th all-time meeting between the two franchises, with the Jaguars holding a 13-10 series advantage. The clubs also met in Week 4 of last season, with the Bengals winning, 33-25. It marked the first-career victory for Burrow, who passed for 300 yards in the win. Running back JOE MIXON totaled 181 scrimmage yards (151 rushing, 30 receiving) and a career-high three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving). Cincinnati enters this week coming off a 24-10 victory over the Steelers, its first win in Pittsburgh since 2015. Burrow completed 14 of 18 passes for a career-high 77.8 completion percentage and added three touchdown passes. He is one of three AFC quarterbacks (DEREK CARR and PATRICK MAHOMES) with at least two touchdown passes in each of the first three weeks of the season. Mixon rushed for 90 yards last week and he aims for his third in a row on Thursday Night Football with at least 85 scrimmage yards. Wide receiver TYLER BOYD had his first touchdown catch of the season in Week 3 and had seven receptions for 90 yards in last year’s meeting. He aims for his third in a row on Thursday Night Football with a touchdown reception. Rookie wide receiver JA’MARR CHASE had two touchdown receptions last week, including a 34-yard catch, and is the third rookie in NFL history with a touchdown catch of at least 25 yards in each of his first three career games, joining DONTE STALLWORTH (2002) and BILLY HOWTON (1952). He is one of four players in the league with a touchdown reception in three games this season. Linebacker LOGAN WILSON led Cincinnati’s defense in Week 3, setting career highs in tackles (14) and interceptions (two). Entering Thursday night, Wilson leads the league with three interceptions this season. Safety JESSIE BATES had eight tackles and a tackle for loss last week and since entering the league in 2018, ranks second among all safeties with 340 tackles. Defensive end TREY HENDRICKSON tied for second in the league with 13.5 sacks last season with New Orleans and has a sack in two of his first three games as a Bengal. Cincinnati is one of two teams in the AFC (Cleveland) with at least 10 team sacks (10) this season.   Last week against Arizona, Lawrence completed 22 of 34 passes (season-high 64.7 pct.) for 219 yards and a touchdown. He enters Thursday leading all rookies with five touchdown passes and ranks second with 669 passing yards. Running back JAMES ROBINSON totaled 134 scrimmage yards (88 rushing, 46 receiving) last week and recorded his first rushing touchdown of the season. In last year’s meeting, Robinson had 107 scrimmage yards (75 rushing, 32 receiving). Wide receiver MARVIN JONES led the team with 62 receiving yards last week. He has a touchdown catch in two of his first three games as a Jaguar. Wide receiver DJ CHARK had eight catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns in last year’s meeting. He is one of four AFC wide receivers with at least five catches in each of the first three weeks of the season. Linebacker MYLES JACK led the Jaguars with a season-high 10 tackles last week. He recorded an interception in last year’s meeting in Cincinnati and aims for his third in a row against the Bengals with an interception. Defensive end/linebacker JOSH ALLEN has a sack in two of three games this season and aims for his third in a row against Cincinnati with a sack. Safety ANDREW WINGARD recorded his first interception of the season last week. Thursday’s contest marks the third of eight games exclusively televised on NFL Network this season and will be produced by FOX. WILD, WILD NFC WEST: Five teams, including four that missed the playoffs last year (Arizona, Carolina, Denver and Las Vegas) are 3-0. Two of the undefeated teams are NFC West rivals that will meet at SoFi Stadium, where the ARIZONA CARDINALS (3-0) travel to clash with the LOS ANGELES RAMS (3-0) on Sunday (4:05 PM ET, FOX). Arizona is tied for the league lead with 34.3 points per game, while the Rams rank third with 31.7. With a rushing touchdown on Sunday, Arizona quarterback KYLER MURRAY would become the first quarterback in NFL history to run for a touchdown in each of his team’s first four games of a season. Murray has rushed for a touchdown in each of his team’s first three games for the second season in a row. Murray, who passed for 316 yards in last week’s win at Jacksonville, aims to lead the Cardinals to their best start in nine years, when they opened 4-0 in 2012. He’s also tied for the league lead with 25 receptions. Last week, Rams wide receiver DESEAN JACKSON recorded a 75-yard touchdown reception in the team’s win over Tampa Bay. This week, the Raiders battle the LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (2-1) on Monday Night Football (8:15 PM ET, ESPN). In the Raiders’ overtime win against Miami, quarterback DEREK CARR passed for 386 yards and two touchdowns with one interception for a 95.7 rating, leading the team to its first 3-0 start since 2002, when they advanced to the Super Bowl. Carr, who enters Week 4 with an NFL-best 1,203 passing yards, is the fourth player with at least 1,200 passing yards through his team’s first three games of a season in NFL history, joining TOM BRADY (1,327 passing yards in 2011), RYAN FITZPATRICK (1,230 in 2018) and Pro Football Hall of Famer KURT WARNER (1,221 in 2000). Dating back to Week 16 of last season, Carr has recorded at least 325 passing yards in five consecutive games, joining RICH GANNON (six games with the Raiders in 2002), DREW BREES (five games with the Saints in 2011) and Pro Football Hall of Famer KURT WARNER (five games with the Rams in 2000 and five games with the Cardinals in 2008) as the only players to pass for 325 yards in five straight games in NFL history. STIFF TEST ON TAP FOR COWBOYS: Four games this week feature two teams with at least two wins, including the CAROLINA PANTHERS (3-0) at the DALLAS COWBOYS (2-1) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX). The Panthers are 3-0 for the first time since they opened 14-0 in 2015 en route to a berth in Super Bowl 50. Carolina’s defense leads the NFL in fewest total yards allowed per game (191.0) and ranks second in fewest points allowed per game (10.0). Panthers quarterback SAM DARNOLD is 8-2 in 10 career starts when passing for at least 270 yards, including 3-0 this season. Carolina linebacker HAASON REDDICK has 12 sacks over his past seven games, dating back to Week 14 of last season. Prior to Reddick, the last player with that many sacks over a seven-game span was Rams defensive lineman AARON DONALD, who registered 12.5 over a seven-game stretch in 2018. Last week, Dallas quarterback DAK PRESCOTT completed 21 of 26 passes for 238 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 143.3 rating. He now has 20 career games with three-or-more touchdown passes. The Cowboys, who lead the NFL with eight takeaways and are tied for first with a plus-five turnover margin, have at least two takeaways in seven straight games (dating to Week 14 of last season), the longest active streak in the league. Dallas cornerback TREVON DIGGS is tied for the NFL lead with three interceptions, while two Cowboys rookies, linebacker MICAH PARSONS and defensive tackle OSA ODIGHIZUWA, are tied for the team lead with 1.5 sacks. DERBY CITY PIPELINE: Starting quarterbacks from the University of Louisville, both first-round draft choices selected 32nd overall, will lead their teams when the BALTIMORE RAVENS (2-1) meet the DENVER BRONCOS (3-0) on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, CBS). Baltimore’s LAMAR JACKSON, selected at the end of the first round by the Ravens in 2018, and Denver’s TEDDY BRIDGEWATER, taken by the Vikings to close the first round in 2014, both hail from South Florida. In 40 career starts, Jackson now has 90 touchdowns (70 passing, 20 rushing) and joined PATRICK MAHOMES (107 touchdowns) and Pro Football Hall of Famers DAN MARINO (95) and KURT WARNER (91) as the only quarterbacks with at least 90 combined passing and rushing touchdowns in their first 40 career starts. Last week as time expired in Detroit, Baltimore kicker JUSTIN TUCKER converted a game-winning 66-yard field goal, the longest field goal in NFL history. Tucker, who also converted a 50-yard field goal in the third quarter last week, has seven career games with multiple 50-yard field goals, tied with BRANDON MCMANUS (seven games) and MATT PRATER (seven) for the most such games in NFL history. Tucker is now 20-for-20 on career field goals attempted either in overtime or the final minute of the fourth quarter. In the league rankings, Baltimore is first with 185.3 rushing yards per game while Denver’s defense is second against the run, allowing just 59.3 rushing yards per game. Denver, which also leads the NFL in fewest points allowed per game (8.7), is off to its best start since opening 4-0 in 2016. Sunday’s game is a rematch of a thrilling 2012 AFC Divisional playoff in Denver, won by the Ravens, 38-35, on JUSTIN TUCKER’s 47-yard field goal in double overtime. With 31 seconds remaining in regulation, Tucker’s extra point knotted the game, following Joe Flacco’s 70-yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Jones. Baltimore used the win as a springboard to a victory in Super Bowl XLVII three weeks later. LEGENDS AT LAMBEAU: Sunday’s game between the PITTSBURGH STEELERS (1-2) and the GREEN BAY PACKERS (2-1) at Lambeau Field (4:25 PM ET, CBS) is significant because it comes more than a decade after starting quarterbacks BEN ROETHLISBERGER and AARON RODGERS met in Super Bowl XLV. This week’s contest will mark the first time two starting quarterbacks have met 11-or-more seasons after a Super Bowl matchup. Prior to this week, the longest stretch was 10 years, when Roethlisberger and MATT HASSELBECK met on Dec. 6, 2015, 10 years after they squared off in Super Bowl XL. Rodgers ranks seventh in NFL history with 418 career touchdown passes and this week can advance to No. 5 on the all-time list. Against Pittsburgh, he can surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (420) and PHILIP RIVERS (421). Rodgers also ranks 10th all-time in passing yards (51,894) entering Week 4. Roethlisberger has 399 career touchdown passes and can become the eighth quarterback all-time to reach 400. He also has 61,149 career passing yards and can surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (61,361) for the sixth-most passing yards in NFL history. Last week, Pittsburgh rookie running back NAJEE HARRIS totaled 14 receptions for 102 yards. Harris’ 14 catches tied SAQUON BARKLEY (Sept. 16, 2018) and ROY HELU (Nov. 6, 2011) for the most single-game receptions by a rookie running back in NFL history. ALLEN WRENCH: The BUFFALO BILLS (2-1) host the HOUSTON TEXANS (1-2) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS) in a rematch of an exciting 2019 Wild Card playoff. In that contest, Buffalo quarterback JOSH ALLEN put the Bills on the board by catching a 16-yard touchdown pass and wound up with 92 rushing yards and 264 passing yards, but Houston stormed back with timely plays, including a fourth-quarter sack and forced fumble by the Texans’ WHITNEY MERCILUS, and Houston prevailed in overtime, 22-19. Since that game, Allen has led the Bills to a 17-5 record, including the postseason. Last week, Allen passed for 358 yards and four touchdowns, and added one rushing touchdown in the Bills’ win over Washington. Allen became the fourth player in NFL history to record multiple career games with at least 300 passing yards, four touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown, joining DREW BREES (four games), AARON RODGERS (three) and Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING (two). NFL’S CRUCIAL CATCH RAISES AWARENESS OF GETTING SCREENED TO CATCH CANCER EARLY 'It Takes All of Us to Intercept Cancer': NFL and American Cancer Society (ACS) work together to encourage screenings during ongoing COVID-19 pandemic For the 13th consecutive year, the National Football League (NFL) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) are working together to support the fight against cancer through "Crucial Catch: Intercept Cancer." The initiative, which kicks off in stadiums Sunday and continues to be highlighted through Week 6 games, addresses early detection and risk reduction efforts across multiple types of cancers. This year, Crucial Catch will again be part of the League's It Takes All of Us cause brand platform. Crucial Catch encourages people to catch cancer early, when it may be easier to treat. This year, that is a greater challenge than ever. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on screening. At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, some cancer screenings declined by 90%. Through Crucial Catch, the NFL and ACS are allocating resources dedicated to safely restarting cancer screenings in communities with the most need. For many forms of cancer (breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate), the five-year survival rate is above 90% when detected early before it has a chance to spread. "The COVID -19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on cancer screenings, with a screening decline that the American Cancer Society expects to lead to more late cancer diagnoses and increased cancer deaths in the future," said Dr. Karen Knudsen, MBA, PhD, chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society. "This year, it is critical to safely restart cancer screenings and to ensure that everyone has access to lifesaving screening. The cancer, which was in the early stage was "very treatable and curable," and he continued to coach his team throughout the season while receiving treatment. Calvin Johnson's mother was diagnosed with, and successfully battled, Pancreatic Cancer in 2013. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif witnessed firsthand the impact the Covid-19 pandemic had on regular cancer screenings, having opted out of the 2020 NFL season to work on the front lines of the pandemic at a long-term care facility in his hometown of Montreal. James Robinson's grandfather overcame kidney cancer. Quincy and Quinnen Williams are big advocates for breast cancer awareness. Their mother, Marquischa Henderson Williams, died of breast cancer in 2010. Najee Harris works closely with the ACS to advocate for more access for the homeless to get screened for cancer. The ARIZONA CARDINALS defeated the Los Angeles Rams, 37-20, and advanced to 4-0 for the first time since 2012. The LAS VEGAS RAIDERS, who visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football, can also improve to 4-0 this week. With two games remaining in Week 4, there have been 15 games with a game-winning score in the final minute of regulation or in overtime, the most such games through the first four weeks of a season since at least 1970. With two overtime games in Week 4, at least one game has gone to overtime in each of the first four weeks of the season for the fifth time in NFL history (2021, 2018, 2002, 1983 and 1979). The New York Giants overcame an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat New Orleans, 27-21, in overtime while the New York Jets defeated Tennessee, 27-24, in overtime this week. Chicago Bears rookie quarterback JUSTIN FIELDS and New York Jets rookie quarterback ZACH WILSON earned their first career victories in Week 4. It marks the first time since Week 3 of the 2019 season (DANIEL JONES and GARDNER MINSHEW) that two rookie quarterbacks each earned their first career win in the same week. The BUFFALO BILLS defeated Houston, 40-0, in Week 4 and have scored at least 35 points in three consecutive games. The Bills, who registered a shutout in Week 2, are the third team since 1990 to record two shutouts in their first four games of a season, joining the BALTIMORE RAVENS (2000) and WASHINGTON (1991). The BALTIMORE RAVENS rushed for 102 yards in their Week 4 win at Denver. Baltimore has rushed for at least 100 yards in 43 consecutive regular-season games, tied with the PITTSBURGH STEELERS (43 consecutive games from 1974-77) for the longest such streak in NFL history. Green Bay quarterback AARON RODGERS recorded three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) with no interceptions in the Packers' 27-17 win over Pittsburgh. Rodgers has 420 career touchdown passes, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (420 touchdown passes) for the sixth-most all time. Pittsburgh quarterback BEN ROETHLISBERGER threw his 400th career touchdown pass on Sunday and became the eighth quarterback all-time with 400 career touchdown passes. Roethlisberger, who had 232 passing yards in Week 4, has 61,381 career passing yards and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (61,361) for the sixth-most passing yards in NFL history. Making his 50th career start, Kansas City quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES recorded five touchdown passes while wide receiver TYREEK HILL totaled 11 receptions for 186 yards and three touchdowns in the Chiefs' 42-30 win over Philadelphia. With the Chiefs' victory, head coach ANDY REID became the first head coach in NFL history to record at least 100 wins with multiple teams, including the playoffs. Reid has 100 wins in nine seasons (2013-current) with Kansas City after registering 140 victories in 14 seasons (1999-2012) with Philadelphia. With the Chiefs' win, Mahomes has a 40-10 record (.800) as a starting quarterback and joined Pro Football Hall of Famer KEN STABLER (40-9-1) as the only quarterbacks whose career began in the Super Bowl era to win 40 of their first 50 career starts. With five touchdown passes in Week 4, Mahomes became the fifth quarterback in NFL history to register at least three touchdown passes in each of his first four games of a season, joining TOM BRADY (first 10 games in 2007) and Pro Football Hall of Famers STEVE YOUNG (first five games in 1998), DAN MARINO (first four games in 1987) and KURT WARNER (first four games in 1999). Mahomes became the first player with four games of at least five touchdown passes in his first 50 career starts and tied Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (four games) for the most such games by a player in his first five seasons all-time. Mahomes has 25 career games with at least three touchdown passes and joined Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (33 games) as the only players with at least 25 such games in their first five seasons in NFL history. Hill, who recorded his fifth-career game with at least 180 receiving yards, is the fifth player with five games with at least 180 receiving yards in his first six seasons in NFL history, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer LANCE ALWORTH (eight games), CHARLEY HENNIGAN (seven), Pro Football Hall of Famer ISAAC BRUCE (six) and ANTONIO BROWN (five). Seattle quarterback RUSSELL WILSON had three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) with no interceptions and a 116.0 rating in the Seahawks' 28-21 win over San Francisco. Wilson earned his 100th career regular-season win and joined Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING (105 wins) as the only quarterbacks with at least 100 regular-season wins in their first 10 seasons in NFL history. Wilson has a passer rating of 110-or-higher and no interceptions in each of his first four games this season and joined JOHN HADL (1973) and MILT PLUM (1960) as the only players in NFL history with a rating of 110-or-higher and no interceptions in each of his team's first four games of a season. Dallas running back EZEKIEL ELLIOTT rushed for 143 yards and one touchdown while cornerback TREVON DIGGS recorded two interceptions in the Cowboys' 36-28 win over Carolina. Elliott, who has 50 rushing touchdowns and 10 touchdown receptions in 75 career games, is the fifth player in NFL history with at least 50 rushing touchdowns and 10 receiving touchdowns in his first 75 career games, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers MARCUS ALLEN and JIM BROWN, as well as ARIAN FOSTER and TODD GURLEY. Diggs, who recorded one interception in each of the first three weeks of the season, is the fourth player since 1990 and first Cowboy all-time to record an interception in each of his team's first four games of a season, joining DEVIN MCCOURTY (2019), BRIAN RUSSELL (2003) and OTIS SMITH (1995). Arizona wide receiver DEANDRE HOPKINS had four receptions for 67 yards in the Cardinals' 37-20 win at the Los Angeles Rams. Hopkins, who is 29 years and 119 days old, has 764 receptions, tied with LARRY FITZGERALD (764 receptions) for the most receptions by a player prior to his 30th birthday. Other notable performances from Sunday include: Carolina quarterback SAM DARNOLD passed for 301 yards and totaled four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) on Sunday. Darnold is the first quarterback in NFL history to record five rushing touchdowns in his team's first four games of a season. Darnold, who also had two rushing touchdowns in Week 3, is the sixth quarterback since 1970 to record multiple rushing touchdowns in consecutive games. Minnesota wide receiver JUSTIN JEFFERSON recorded six receptions for 84 yards and one touchdown on Sunday. Jefferson has 114 receptions for 1,738 yards and 10 touchdowns in 20 career games and joined ODELL BECKHAM JR. and A.J. GREEN as the only players with at least 100 receptions, 1,500 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches in their first 20 games in NFL history.
