UFC Fight Night 77: Belfort vs Henderson 3

          Vitor Belfort (25-11) no tan solo ganó la tercera batalla ante Dan Henderson (31-14), si no que demostró que merece una oportunidad titular en la división de los pesos medianos en la UFC. Belfort deleitó a los presentes en el Ibirapuera Gymnasium de Sao Paulo, Brasil, con un impresionante KO a los 2:07 del primer round. Belfort le conectó una patada a la cabeza de Henderson que lo estremeció y luego lo remató con solidas izquierdas hasta que el arbitro detuvo la pelea. Belfort implanta una marca con 12 victorias por KO en UFC, pasando al gran Anderson Silva. Belfort ganó la ultimas dos batallas ante Henderson, quien a sus 45 años debería acogerse al retiro. ¿Le dará Chris Weidman otra oportunidad titular a Belfort? Ya veremos si pasa.

          Glover Teixeira (24-4) masacró a puños sin problemas a Patrick Cummings (8-3) para apuntarse un TKO a los 1:12 del segundo round en una batalla en la división Light Heavyweight. Thomas Almeida (21-0) mantuvo su invicto ante su gente y se colocó como una real amenaza en los Bantamweight al vencer vía KO a los 4:24 del primer asalto ha Anthony Birchak (12-3). Almeida le dio un clase de palo a Birchak con una derecha directa al rostro que lo liquidó al momento. Alex Oliveira (13-2-1-1NC) puso a vibrar a los presentes cuando derrotó vía KO a los 51 segundos del tercer round a Piotr Hallman (15-5). Oliveira le conectó una fuerte derecha a Hallman que lo mandó al suelo para apuntarse la victoria. Rashid Magomedov (19-1) sigue haciendo ruido en las 155 libras al dominar por decisión unánime (30-27, 30-27 y 30-27) a Gilbert Burns (10-1). Magomedov ganó su 12 consecutiva y se ponen en fila para una posible oportunidad titular, pero antes necesita crear un intento asesino de terminar las peleas cuando está la oportunidad en vez de ponérselo en las manos a los jueces. Magomedov demostró que tiene tremenda técnica y que es difícil de vencer. Corey Anderson (8-1), ganador del TUF19, derrotó a Fabio Maldonado (22-9) vía decisión unánime (30-27, 30-27 y 30-27). Anderson dominó con su ground and pound.

Las Vegas – The UFC^® returns to Fairfax, Va. on Saturday, April 4, as the featherweight division’s No. 1 contender Chad Mendes goes to head-to-head with fourth-ranked Ricardo Lamas in the five-round main event at the Patriot Center. Having both gone the distance in title bouts against champion Jose Aldo, these battle-tested 145ers will light up the Octagon^® when UFC FIGHT NIGHT^® takes center stage in the Greater Washington area.

Mendes (16-2, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.), one of the heaviest hitters in the featherweight division,  has been taking out top contenders in dominant fashion with wins over Darren Elkins, Clay Guida, Nik Lentz and Cub Swanson. His back-and-forth battle with Aldo at UFC 179 went down as one of the greatest fights in 2014. Lamas (15-3, fighting out of Chicago, Ill.) boasts an equally impressive resume that includes wins over Dennis Bermudez, Erik Koch and Swanson. With combined wins over the Who’s Who in the 145-pound weight class, Mendes and Lamas eye each other as their ticket to earning another shot at the title.

 

The co-main event will feature a staple in the lightweight division as (No. 13) Jorge Masvidal (28-6, fighting out of Miami) takes on rising contender (No. 15) Al Iaquinta (11-3-1, fighting out of Wantagh, N.Y.), a winner of three straight. Plus, The Ultimate Fighter^® season 15 winner Michael Chiesa (11-2, fighting out of Spokane Valley, Wash.) takes on Canadian-born Mitch Clarke (11-2, fighting out of Glendale, Ariz.).

In addition, former top featherweight contender Dustin Poirier (16-4, fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla.) will test the 155-pound waters when he makes his UFC lightweight debut against Diego Ferreira (10-1, fighting out of Pharr, Texas). Also, in a crucial women’s bantamweight bout, former title contender and women’s MMA pioneer (No. 8) Liz Carmouche (8-5, fighting out of San Diego, Calif.) makes her fifth UFC appearance against rising star Lauren Murphy (8-1, fighting out of Glendale, Ariz.).

Additional bouts include:

·         (No. 11) Julianna Pena (6-2, fighting out of Spokane, Wash.), the first female season winner to emerge from The Ultimate Fighter, returns after a 17-month layoff to take on rising women’s bantamweight Milana Dudieva (11-3, fighting out of Alagir, Russia).  

·         Former STRIKEFORCE lightweight champion and fan-favorite (No. 11) Clay Guida (31-12, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) takes on Robbie Peralta (18-5, 1NC, fighting out of Escondido, Calif.) in a featherweight bout.  

·         Former lightweight title contender Gray Maynard (12-5-1, 1NC, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.) meets MMA veteran Alexander Yakovlev (21-6-1, fighting out of Fairfield, N.J.).

·         Ron Stallings (12-7, 1NC, fighting out of Camp Spring, Md.) will make his second Octagon appearance when he meets middleweight Justin Jones (3-1, fighting out of San Diego, Calif.).

·         The Ultimate Fighter season 17 alumnus Clint Hester (11-4, fighting out of Atlanta, Ga.) squares off against fellow season cast mate Luke Barnatt (8-2, fighting out of Cambridge, England).

·         Plus, heavyweights Shamil Abdurahimov (15-2, fighting out of Makhachkala, Russia) and Timothy Johnson (8-1, fighting out of Fargo, N.D.) meet in their UFC debuts.

Nevada State Athletic Commission requests Anderson Silva step down as coach of the series

Las Vegas – The UFC^® announced today that Brazilian legend Rodrigo "Big Nog" Nogueira will join the cast of The Ultimate Fighter^® Brazil 4, the organization’s signature television reality series, as coach following the departure of UFC middleweight Anderson Silva. 

The Nevada State Athletic Commission, which regulates The Ultimate Fighter series’ exhibition fights filmed in Las Vegas, requested that Silva cease participation in the series as a result of his temporary suspension following the recently announced preliminary results of his January 9 pre-fight drug test for UFC^® 183.

The UFC and Globo, the show’s Brazilian broadcaster, respect the Commission’s decision, which will allow Silva to focus his attention on the matter before the Commission. Anderson Silva has been an amazing champion and a true ambassador of the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC will continue to support him as this process unfolds. 

The series, which began filming in Las Vegas on Monday, Feb. 2, originally featured Silva and former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua as head coaches. Rua will continue on as coach of Team Shogun versus the newly formed Team Nogueira, which will also include Big Nog’s twin brother Rogerio "Lil Nog" Nogueira as an assistant coach.

      Con casa llena en el MGM Grand en Las Vegas, Nevada el “Mighty Mouse” tuvo una defensa exitosa de su faja Flyweight. Demetrious Johnson (21-2-1) ganó su séptima pelea consecutiva al vencer vía Sumisión/Tap Out/Kimura, a los 2:29 del segundo asalto, a Chris Cariaso (17-6). Johnson dominó el primer asalto atacando el cuerpo con su striking y con dominio en el suelo luego de un takedown. Johnson por poco termina a Cariaso en el primer asalto con una fuerte derecha seguida de un rodillazo. En el evento co-estelar, Donald Cerrone (25-6-1NC) venció por decisión unánime (29-28, 29-28 y 29-28) al peleador de sangre boricua Eddie Álvarez (25-4). Álvarez, quien viene de ser campeón de Bellator MMA, no pudo con la fuertes patadas al cuerpo de Cerrone. Álvarez ganó el primer asalto, pero Cerrone se llevó los últimos dos con su striking. En mis tarjetas también la vi 29-28 a favor de Cerrone. Esta batalla fue la división Lightweight. El “Irish” Conor McGregor (16-2) habló, se burló y noqueó a Dustin Poirier (16-4) a los 1:46 del primer asalto. McGregor mandó al suelo a Poirier con una fuerte izquierda y luego lo remata hasta que el arbitro detiene la pelea. El cubano Yoel Romero (9-1) gana su quinta pelea al hilo al vencer por TKO a los 58 segundos del tercer asalto a Tim Kennedy (18-5). Esta pelea fue en el peso mediano y la misma tuvo una controversia al comenzar el tercer asalto, donde la esquina del cubano demoró más de lo permitido, dándole un segundo adicionales a Romero para recuperarse. Kennedy literalmente noqueó a Romero al finalizar el segundo asalto y sinceramente la campana fue lo quien lo salvó. Ese aire adicional llenó de fuerzas al cubano para propinarles fuertes derechas que liquidaron a Cerrone. Cat Zingano (9-0) mantuvo su invicto en la división femenina al vencer ha Amanda Nunes vía TKO a los 1:21 del tercer round. Luego de casi 3 años fuera por una lesión en la rodilla, Dominick Cruz (20-1), regresó mejor que nunca al noquear en tan solo 1:01 del primer asalto a Takeya Mizugaki (20-8-2). ¡Que clase de retorno el de Cruzzzzzz!

          Chad Mendes (16-2) tuvo su oportunidad de vengar la única derrota en su carrera ante Jose Aldo (25-1) y arrebatarle la faja Featherweight. Lamentablemente no pudo lograrlo a pesar de una gran demostración por 5 rounds, al caer derrotado ante Aldo por decisión unánime (49-46, 49-46 y 49-46) en el Ginásio do Maracanãzinho en Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Yo vi ganar 48-47 al campeón Aldo. Sin duda Mendes no perdió a los 4:59 del primer asalto vía un rodillazo devastador como en el UFC 142, pero tampoco le resulto el toma y dame por 5 asaltos ante Aldo. A pesar de que el campeón terminó en una visible peor condición que Mendes, el mismo fue certero en su striking y logró poner en varias ocasiones en malas condiciones al retador. Inclusive literalmente lo KO con dos solidos puños al rostro luego de sonar la campana en el primer round. Phil Davis (13-2-1NC) venció por decisión unánime (30-27, 30-27 y 30-27) a Glover Teixeira (22-4) en una batalla de semipesados (205 libras). Davis dominó el suelo con fuertes agarres que frustraron que Teixeira estableciera su plan ofensivo. En otra batalla de semipesados, Fabio Maldonado (22-7) venció vía TKO a los 4:06 del segundo asalto a Hans Stringer (22-6-3). Fabio logró el TKO al dominar en el suelo a Stringer y bajarle con una trulla de golpes sin ser respondidos hasta que el árbitro detuvo el combate. Anderson Silva se trepó al borde de la jaula para abrazar y felicitar a Maldonado, en lo que fue el momento más emotivo de la cartelera. Darren Elkins (19-4) se apuntó una abucheada decisión dividida (30-27, 27-30 y 30-27) ante Lucas Martins (15-2) en una batalla en el peso pluma. Beneil Dariush (9-1) venció por decisión unánime (30-27, 30-27 y 30-27) a Carlos Diego Ferreira (10-1) en una batalla en el peso ligero.
