Liman achieved a significant victory, especially after their loss at the Shanghai Masters 2023 final last week. Ann Meyers Drysdale's career escalated women's basketball to a new level. She was the first high school player to make the United States national team and the first woman to receive a full four-year athletic scholarship to UCLA. Her high-octane approach translated into wins and awards, and she finished her impressive career at UCLA, owning 12 of 13 school records, including becoming the first player to record a quadruple-double in UCLA history. A supremely talented all-around player with natural basketball ability and instincts, Meyers Drysdale was the first player, male or female, named to an All-America team in four straight seasons and was named Player of the Year during her senior year. While still at UCLA, she started on the first women's Olympic team in 1976. After an All-America career, she became the first player drafted into the Women's Basketball League, earning WBL MVP and making history by becoming the first female player to try out with an NBA team, the Indiana Pacers, with whom she signed a free-agent contract. Meyers Drysdale pushed the envelope in women's basketball, bringing a feel and sense for the game that few players ever exhibited. She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.  In 2007, she was the first American woman to be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame. In 2012, Meyers Drysdale became one of the first annual honorees on the women’s side of the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) with the organization’s National Women’s Player of the Year. Since retiring from professional play, she has had a very successful career as an NBA and WNBA executive, as well as a color commentator for the NBA, WNBA, and the Olympic Games in 1984, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. In 2005, she received the ASAMA Ronald Reagan Media Award, and in 2019, she was inducted into the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the Pac-12 Hall of Honor.

About Nancy Lieberman

Playing hoops on the rough-and-tumble Harlem courts, Brooklyn-bred Nancy Lieberman learned to play a physical, aggressive style of basketball unlike other women of her time. As a 5'10" point guard, Lieberman was taller than many of the guards of her era, and her ability to drive to the hoop, dish out assists, and grab hard-fought rebounds served her well during her stellar career. She compiled over 2,400 points, 1,100 rebounds, and 961 assists as she led the Lady Monarchs to a 125-15 record, 1 WNIT Title and back to back National Championships in 1979 and 1980 (102-6 her last 3 years).

Before her illustrious career began at ODU, Nancy made the 1975 USA Pan Am team that won the Gold Medal in Mexico City she was a high school junior at Far Rockaway High School at the time. In 1976, as a member of the USA’s first Women’s Olympic Team which won the Silver Medal, Lieberman made history by being the youngest Olympian in basketball ever, male or female (which still stands today). Lieberman then led Old Dominion University to back-to-back AIAW national championships in 1979 and 1980. She was twice named the Wade Trophy winner — a basketball first as the nation's top female athlete during those two seasons, 3-time All-American. Lieberman was the two-time winner of the Broderick Cup as well., Lieberman played professionally in the first women’s pro league in the WBL 1980-81 and in 1984 in the WABA. Earning WBL MVP honors with the Dallas Diamonds in 1981, she led the team to the 1984 WABA championship and was league MVP.

In 1986, she signed to be the first woman to play in a men’s professional league in the USBL with the Springfield Fame, and in 1987, with the Long Island Knights. She joined the 1987 Harlem Globetrotter world tour with the Washington Generals. 1997 Lieberman made history in the inaugural season of the WNBA, playing for the Phoenix Mercury at the age of 39, and in 2008, playing for the Detroit Shock at age 50! Her coaching career started in 1998 as the Head Coach/GM for the Detroit Shock, taking the Shock to the playoffs in year two. In 2011, she was the first female head coach hired in the NBA D-League for the Dallas Mavericks affiliate, the Texas Legends, and led them to the playoffs. In 2015, she became only the second woman hired as an assistant coach in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings. She was named a recipient of the 2017 Mannie Jackson Basketball’s Human Spirit Award for her on-going philanthropic work across the country through her Nancy Lieberman Charities, changing the lives of underserved youth across the country. In 2018 Nancy Lieberman became the first female head coach in a men’s’s professional league with the BIG3 League for Team Power. Nancy led team Power to a 2018 Championship victory and was selected Coach of the Year, becoming the first female in history to be awarded Coach of the Year. Record breaking numbers for FIBA International Transfers

OCTOBER 16, 2023

NEUCHATEL/MIES (Switzerland) – The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) and FIBA have published the International Basketball Migration Report (IBMR) 2023 and it contains some all-time highs.

The 12th edition of the report has harnessed FIBA's knowledge and data on international transfers alongside the renowned analytical expertise of CIES to provide valuable insight into player movement trends and other global basketball tendencies for the period 2022-23.

With the sport's globalization continuing at a relentless pace and its popularity soaring, there are some record-breaking numbers that headlined the main findings of the IBMR 2023.
Another record number of international player transfers

For the first time since the IBMR report was introduced, there were over 11,000 international transfers. Both men and women experienced notable increases in their numbers.

The Americas region remained the main exporter with a positive balance (more exports than imports) of 1,440. The Europe region remained the biggest importer, with 11 of the 15 largest importers coming from the Continent. Spain, Germany and Italy were the top countries in this category.

A record number of games recorded and a bigger impact from foreign players

More games played were recorded in 2022-23 than ever before, with Japan reaching a notable increase of 25 percent across the last two years at 720. This was followed by China and Argentina with 420 and 380 games, respectively.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said: "Thanks to the expertise and skills that have contributed to this latest IBMR, we're able to keep our intense focus on exploring the key topics of global player transfers, the migratory balance per country, and the movement of players between countries."

"Passing the landmark of 11,000 transfers and setting a new all-time high is, of course, highly significant and we will be striving to interpret what it means for basketball moving forward.

"With millions of registered players worldwide and backed by FIBA and 212 National Federations, the global nature of the sport is always in our minds. We need to continue being relentless in safeguarding and growing the popularity of basketball around the world."

He added: "This is why we are so dedicated and passionate about investigating, researching and understanding all aspects of player movement to guarantee the continuous evolution of the sport. This is also something strongly linked to the way that FIBA embraces and harnesses technology and innovation – something that may enhance the IBMR itself even more in the future."

Both teams impressed the Shanghai audience with their exceptional teamwork and impressive shooting abilities. The 59 percent market share on RTS in Serbia was also particularly impressive.

Fans also came in big numbers to watch the games, with over 700,665 attending during the course of the tournament, including
the record-breaking FIBA Basketball World Cup crowd of 38,115 at the Philippine Arena for the game between the co-hosts and the Dominican Republic.
"We are very proud and extremely satisfied with the fact that this was the most followed FIBA Basketball World Cup ever and attracted those record levels of engagement," stated FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.

"Our biggest-ever event showcased the sport like never before and it underlined that the global appetite for basketball is growing more strongly than ever. Both the existing fans and the millions of new fans that we attracted during the tournament enjoyed some amazing basketball and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their support."

He added: "We also appreciate the amazing work of our partners in helping to deliver a competition that will be remembered for a very long time. However, we don't stop here, and we're already looking forward to breaking more new ground at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 in Qatar."
