Since entering the league in 2020, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback JUSTIN HERBERT leads the NFL with 19 games with at least 300 passing yards.

NFL Foundation UK Partners with Eight Community Organizations to Help Deliver Opportunities for Young People in London

NFL Foundation UK launches eight London community partnerships to help create a level playing field for local young people through the power of sport.

5 October 2022, London: The National Football League's UK charity, the NFL Foundation UK, has announced the names of the eight community partners they will work with in London to help tackle inequality and lack of opportunities felt by young people in the capital.

The community partners from across 13 London boroughs will initially work with over 2500 young people, 58% of which are female and 75% who are from a diverse ethnic background, helping underrepresented young people have equal access to opportunities.

NFL Foundation UK will be working with these community groups for the next two-years, providing NFL Flag Football programmes, training, and equipment to help young people aged 12-20 access positive pathways and develop the skills, confidence, and self-belief to create their own future, impact society and reach their potential.

The NFL Foundation UK launched in 2021 as part of the NFL's international charitable endeavours and a partnership with the Greater London Authority saw the duo commit a combined £1 million to the deliver NFL Foundation UK's work in the capital. Using the power of sport to reach communities, NFL Flag has been proven to be a strong engagement tool with diverse and underserved groups, in particular young people.

The NFL Foundation UK will provide funding and NFL Flag training in co-created partnerships with local community charities that seek positive outputs and outcomes for young people around education, employment, community engagement and physical & mental wellbeing.

The announcement comes as the International Games are in London, with Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hosting two of the three NFL games in 2022.  The launch event, featuring young people from all eight community organisations and local schools, was held exclusively on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium pitch.  NFL Flag football, football drills by expert coaches from Tottenham Hotspur, and Nike Master Trainers delivered a unique training experience for the youngsters.

Henry Hodgson, General Manager NFL UK, said, "We are proud to announce the eight community partners we will work closely with in the coming years as part of our commitment to helping to address inequality in society through the power of sport, education and opportunity.

"These eight organisations are already doing incredibly important work in their communities, and together we are excited about the potential to further impact the lives of youngsters in the UK through the NFL Foundation UK."

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: "I'm delighted that the NFL Foundation UK has chosen to support eight London community partnerships helping young people across the capital. Sport has the power to change people's lives and by working together these partnerships will inspire and provide opportunities to thousands of young people."

Gavin Lewis, NFL Foundation UK Trustee, commented: "I know first-hand the important work that community organisations do in helping tackle the inequality and lack of opportunities that young people face.    In partnership with the NFL Foundation UK these eight organisations, through the power of sport and access to greater opportunities, will reach more young people in their communities, helping to transform lives and enable a positive long-term impact on society."

Naiola Idhe, Programme Lead at Deptford Lionesses, said: "At the Deptford Lionesses we create opportunities for young girls to get involved in sport, helping to make an impact on lives but also to improve community cohesion.  Our partnership with the NFL Foundation UK, and through their NFL Flag and social programme, will enable us to reach and inspire more girls to get active and find their place in our community and thrive."

Shaninga Marasha from BIGKID Foundation, and one of the eight beneficiary partners, added: "We were one of the pilot projects, have seen first-hand the impact that the Foundation has. The energy that NFL Flag creates is infectious and brings in young people that we previously have struggled to engaged. It's going to be a big two years!."

The NFL Foundation UK, that launched in 2021, has today opened a new application process for charities across the UK, to reach communities beyond London, as the programme expands.

9. TENDENCIA.

The Starting 11 -- NFL off to its most competitive start ever entering Week 5

They say competition makes you better. In the NFL, competition has taken the league’s excitement to an unprecedented level. As the league approaches the initial quarter pole of the 2022 season, consider this:

  • So far, 50 games have been within one score in the fourth quarter, the most through Week 4 in NFL history.
  • This past week, 15 of 16 games (93.8 percent) were within one score in the fourth quarter, the most in a single week in NFL history.
  • Through four weeks, 23 games have been decided by three points or fewer, and 31 have been decided by six points or fewer, both the most ever at this point in a season.

What could possibly be next?

The Starting 11 entering Week 5…

1. SPEAKING OF CLOSE GAMES: Both the NEW YORK GIANTS (3-1) and GREEN BAY PACKERS (3-1) have played well in close games this season. The two clubs, which face off at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (9:30 AM ET, NFL Network), are each 2-0 in games decided by three points or less. The Packers (23.8 percent) and the Giants (29.4) also lead the league in third-down defense.

2. NUMBER OF THE WEEK – 3: The number of 1-3 teams that rebounded to earn playoff berths a season ago (NEW ENGLANDPHILADELPHIA and PITTSBURGH). Also in 2021, both KANSAS CITY and SAN FRANCISCO started 2-3, were last in their division standings after five weeks, and advanced to their respective conference championship games.

3. REGGIE WHITE WAS DOMINATING FOR THE EAGLES…in 1990, the last time every NFL team had at least one win or tie entering Week 5 (and the Minister of Defense was leading the league with six sacks). This week, PHILADELPHIA (4-0) is the NFL’s lone remaining undefeated team for the first time since 2004, when the Eagles started 7-0 en route to a berth in Super Bowl XXXIX.

4. SPOTLIGHT – INDIVIDUAL MATCHUPS: Over his career, Dallas guard ZACK MARTIN has more Pro Bowl selections (seven) than holding calls (five). Shortly before the Cowboys selected Martin 16th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Rams chose defensive lineman AARON DONALD at No. 13. Since that Draft, Donald leads the NFL with 100 sacks. DALLAS (3-1) visits the LOS ANGELES RAMS (2-2) on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, FOX).

  • When the Rams have the ball, COOPER KUPP will be on the same field with TREVON DIGGS. Since the beginning of last season, Kupp leads the NFL in receptions (187), receiving yards (2,349) and receiving touchdowns (19). Over the same period, Diggs leads the league with 13 interceptions.
5. SPOTLIGHT – TEAM MATCHUPSPITTSBURGH (1-3) and BUFFALO (3-1) – who clash Sunday at Highmark Stadium (1:00 PM ET, CBS) – deploy two of the NFL’s most opportunistic defenses. They’re tied for the league lead with seven interceptions apiece. In that game, quarterback KENNY PICKETT, the No. 20 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, is expected to make his first NFL start. Pickett hails from New Jersey’s Ocean Township High School, which also produced PHIL VILLAPIANO, a Pro Bowl linebacker who played for the Raiders and Bills.

  • MIAMI (3-1) and the NEW YORK JETS (2-2) play Sunday at MetLife Stadium (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Each team’s respective head coach, MIKE MCDANIEL and ROBERT SALEH, came from the 49ers.
  • KANSAS CITY (3-1) hosts LAS VEGAS (1-3) on Monday Night Football (8:15 PM ET, ESPN). Since PATRICK MAHOMES became the Chiefs’ starting quarterback at the beginning of the 2018 season, the team leads the NFL in wins (53), points (2,098) and third-down conversion percentage (49.2 percent).
6. STREAK SPEAK: The HOUSTON TEXANS (0-3-1) meet the JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (2-2) on Sunday at TIAA Bank Field (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Houston has won eight straight over Jacksonville, tied for the NFL’s fourth-longest active winning streak over an opponent.
7. DID YOU KNOW?: Including postseason, over his last six games, San Francisco safety TALANOA HUFANGA has scored two significant fourth-quarter touchdowns. In the 49ers’ 13-10 win at Green Bay during the Divisional playoffs, Hufanga returned a blocked punt 6 yards for a game-tying score with less than five minutes remaining. And in last week’s win, with the Rams driving in a one-score game, Hufanga returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown with 6:27 left in the final stanza.
  • Coordinator DEMECO RYANS and his 49ers defense lead the NFL in scoring (11.5 points allowed per game) and are tied for the league lead in fewest yards allowed (234.5). SAN FRANCISCO (2-2) visits CAROLINA (1-3) on Sunday (4:05 PM ET, CBS).
8. UNDER-THE-RADAR STORYLINE: This season marks the 75th anniversary of a major milestone in league annals. In 1947, VIOLET BIDWELL became the first female owner in NFL history, taking over the Cardinals until she passed away in 1962. The year she became the franchise’s top executive, Pro Football Hall of Famer CHARLEY TRIPPI returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown and ran 44 yards for another to lead the Cardinals to victory in the 1947 NFL Championship, over the Eagles. This week, PHILADELPHIA (4-0) travels to play ARIZONA (2-2) on Sunday at State Farm Stadium (4:25 PM ET, FOX).
9. TREND TIME: The Bengals’ defense has allowed one touchdown over its last 31 opponent drives. The Ravens’ offense ranks third in the NFL with 29.8 points per game. CINCINNATI (2-2) travels to BALTIMORE (2-2) for an AFC North Showdown on Sunday Night Football (8:20 PM ET, NBC).
10. THIS WEEK IN NFL HISTORY: Oct. 7, 1962 (60 years ago) – A pair of future Pro Football Hall of Famers prove pivotal in helping the Packers steal a win from the Lions. HERB ADDERLEY’s late 40-yard interception return sets up PAUL HORNUNG’s game-winning field goal with 33 seconds remaining, vaulting Green Bay to a 9-7 win. In a battle of the league’s lone remaining undefeated and untied teams, Hornung finishes with 37 rushing yards, 10 receiving yards and three field goals. Less than three months later, the Packers would knock off the NEW YORK GIANTS at Yankee Stadium in the 1962 NFL Championship, 16-7.
11. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Washington rookie JAHAN DOTSON, tied with STEFON DIGGS for the NFL lead with four receiving touchdowns, serves as a Crucial Catch ambassador for the NFL and the American Cancer Society. The Commanders selected the wide receiver with the No. 16 overall choice in the 2022 NFL Draft.

  • Cancer also has touched the family of cornerback CALEB FARLEY, a Crucial Catch ambassador for the Titans. Farley was the No. 22 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft and is expected to see action for TENNESSEE (2-2) at WASHINGTON (1-3) on Sunday at FedExField (1:00 PM ET, CBS).
  • The NFL and the American Cancer Society teamed up to create Crucial Catch to help more people intercept cancer early, especially in communities with the greatest need. The five-year survival rate for many cancers is over 90 percent when detected early. Anyone can visit NFL.com/CrucialCatch or text “CATCH” to 635635 to find local cancer-screening centers and additional screening resources.

NFL, Premier League Meet in London to Share Best Practices in Player Health and Safety

London (Oct. 4, 2022) – Medical leaders from the National Football League (NFL) and the Premier League met this week in London to discuss player health and safety advancements and best practices as part of the annual NFL London games.

Today, medical staff from the NFL, the Premier League and its clubs, held a day-long summit to review the latest data, research findings across and practice across key areas including soft tissue injury reduction, mental wellness, concussion and head impacts.

The meeting brought together world-class physicians, surgeons, athletic trainers, physiotherapists and sport scientists from the leagues’ clubs and elsewhere, providing a unique opportunity for collaboration and information-sharing. The summit was the second of its kind; the inaugural medical summit between the two leagues took place in October 2021.

Yesterday, the NFL’s medical leadership led a delegation from the Premier League experts on a behind-the-scenes tour of the game day medical protocols and procedures used during NFL games.

The NFL and the Premier League are both committed to gathering knowledge and insight from peers and experts around the world as they remain focused on player welfare and providing the highest quality care to some of the world’s most elite athletes.

NFL-NFLPA Joint Statement

NFL-NFLPA JOINT STATEMENT

The joint NFL-NFLPA investigation into the application of the Concussion Protocol involving Miami Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains ongoing. Therefore, we have not made any conclusions about medical errors or protocol violations.

The NFL and the NFLPA agree that modifications to the Concussion Protocol are needed to enhance player safety. The NFLPA’s Mackey-White Health & Safety Committee and the NFL’s Head Neck and Spine Committee have already begun conversations around the use of the term “Gross Motor Instability” and we anticipate changes to the protocol being made in the coming days based on what has been learned thus far in the review process.

The NFL and NFLPA share a strong appreciation for the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultants who contribute their time and expertise to our game solely to advance player safety. This program has made our game safer for the athletes who play it for the past twelve seasons.

NFL AND ACS LAUNCH NEW CANCER SCREENING PLATFORM AS PART OF CRUCIAL CATCH INITIATIVE

Through the promotion of screening and early detection, NFL funded grants have

directly impacted more than 1.3 million people over the last decade

For the last 14 years, the National Football League (NFL) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) have teamed up to support the fight against cancer through "Crucial Catch: Intercept Cancer." The initiative, which kicks off in stadiums Sunday and continues to be highlighted through Week 6 games, addresses early detection and risk reduction efforts across multiple types of cancers.

Since its inception, Crucial Catch has placed an emphasis on getting screened and catching cancer early when it may be easier to treat. New this year, through funding provided by the NFL as part of the Crucial Catch initiative, fans and members of the NFL Family will be able to easily find their nearest cancer screening center and additional screening resources at NFL.com/CrucialCatch or by texting "CATCH" to 635635. The site also provides resources for fans to determine the type of cancer screening they need, a cancer hotline and a 24-hour chat for anyone who needs their screening questions answered.

This year, Crucial Catch will be featured in a brand spot that is part of the League's new "We See You" cause advertising campaign. Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III, who was recently diagnosed with a form of Leukemia, is featured in this public service announcement (PSA) and is helping use his voice to encourage the NFL family to get screened.

"With my recent cancer diagnosis, I know now more than ever the importance of screening and early detection," said Houston Texans Wide Receiver JOHN METCHIE III. "I'm thankful to be able to use my voice and my story to encourage others to get screened so they can catch cancer early when it's easier to treat."

The NFL has funded the American Cancer Society's Community Health Advocates Implementation Nationwide Grants for Empowerment and Equity (CHANGE) grants since 2012, which have contributed to more than 600,000 screenings in under-resourced communities and reached more than 1.3 million individuals through education, screening reminders and patient navigation. CHANGE grants are currently removing barriers to cancer screening in the 32 NFL markets. Some of the services provided this season include providing funding for mobile mammograms, expanding screening services to the uninsured and operations outside of normal business hours, plus rides to those experiencing transportation barriers.

All 32 NFL teams will have the option of supporting the Crucial Catch initiative in stadiums and in their communities this year. In addition, players may wear cleats and shoelaces in any color representing the type of cancer awareness they support and/or have been impacted by during their team's Crucial Catch game. Additionally, 22 NFL players, including John Metchie III, have joined the American Cancer Society as player ambassadors to champion the fight against cancer as part of Crucial Catch.

Beginning on Sunday, Oct. 2, and continuing through Week 6, NFL Crucial Catch games will feature an array of in-game visuals such as Crucial Catch game balls, goal post wraps and field-wall banners, branded on-field equipment for players, coaches, and officials among other activations that will make the initiative come alive in-stadium. Game-worn Crucial Catch merchandise will be auctioned on NFL Auction (NFL.com/Auction). The NFL does not profit from the sale of Crucial Catch merchandise. Charitable contributions are donated to the American Cancer Society to support its CHANGE grant program.

NFL-issued Crucial Catch gameday apparel will feature a multi-colored logo representing all cancers. New Era and Nike have created newly designed Crucial Catch gear, highlighting the NFL's commitment to drawing awareness to and supporting multiple cancer prevention efforts. Fans can purchase NFL-licensed Crucial Catch apparel on NFLShop.com.

Fan Creations has also released Crucial Catch wooden signs again this year to remind those that have been diagnosed with cancer that they are not alone in fighting this disease which will be available for purchase on NFLShop.com and proceeds will go to ACS.

"We See You"This year's Crucial Catch ad campaign focuses on cancer awareness and early detection initiatives, in partnership with ACS. The NFL created a PSA to increase awareness and, most importantly, encourage fans to be proactive in finding their local cancer center and local screening resources. The PSA speaks to the struggles that many face when it comes to taking the next step in getting screened - whether it be lack of transportation or health insurance, etc. – and the solutions that the NFL and American Cancer Society are working to provide through resources funded by Crucial Catch grants. The NFL and ACS see a future where everyone has access to cancer screenings, no matter who you are or where you are from. You can see the spot featuring Metchie III here.

Facebook Challenge For the second year in a row, American Cancer Society and the NFL are teaming up for a Crucial Catch Facebook fundraising challenge with a goal of raising $500,000. A series of Facebook ads will launch promoting the "October 25 Push-Ups A Day" challenge presented by NFL's Crucial Catch. Facebook users can opt-in to the challenge via a Facebook group where they will connect with other Facebook users around the country, join teams or participate individually. In addition to logging 25 push-ups a day, users will be encouraged to start a Facebook fundraiser to raise money for American Cancer Society's Crucial Catch program.  Last year, the challenge raised $330,000. Fans can sign up at cancer.org/crucialcatch.

Additional Crucial Catch Activations

Sun Safety Crucial Catch kicked off this NFL season during training camp with an initiative to raise awareness and reduce the risk of skin cancer.  Several NFL club training camps offered sunscreen samples at their training camps as well as sun safety tips. Find more information at cancer.org/sunsafety.

Youth Crucial Catch Each year, college, high school and youth football teams from across the country do their part to raise funds and help the NFL in these efforts. Schools, leagues, intramural clubs, and community athletic organizations are invited to unite with the NFL and join Youth Crucial Catch to raise funds to beat cancer. To start a fundraising team, register online at youthcrucialcatch.org.
