SUPER STARTERS: History indicates that the best way for a team to start its drive toward a Super Bowl championship is to win in Week 1. The 56 Super Bowl winners have a 45-10-1 record in the Kickoff Weekend games of their title seasons. The Super Bowl LVI champion LOS ANGELES RAMS, who host the BUFFALO BILLS in the league’s annual primetime Kickoff Game on Thursday (8:20 PM ET, NBC), have won their last five Kickoff Weekend games, the longest active streak in the NFC. Last year marked the sixth time in the last seven seasons the eventual Super Bowl winner won the opening game of its championship season. The KANSAS CITY CHIEFS, who have appeared in four consecutive AFC Championship Games, travel to play the ARIZONA CARDINALS in Week 1 (4:25 pm ET, CBS), a matchup of two 2021 playoff teams. Kansas City has won its past seven Kickoff Weekend games, the longest active streak in the NFL. With a win on Sunday, they can become the sixth team in the Super Bowl era to win eight consecutive season-opening games. The teams with the most consecutive season-opening wins in the Super Bowl era: TEAM | SEASONS | CONSECUTIVE WINS | Dallas | 1966-81 | 16 | Miami | 1992-2002 | 11 | New England | 2004-13 | 10 | Chicago | 1984-92 | 9 | Pittsburgh | 2003-10 | 8 | | | | Kansas City | 2015-21 | 7* | *Active streak
Arizona, meanwhile, has won each of its last two Week 1 games and KLIFF KINGSBURY is one of four active head coaches without a loss on Kickoff Weekend (not including first-year head coaches). Since 2002, when the NFL expanded to 32 clubs, teams that are victorious in their season-openers are more than twice as likely to reach the playoffs than those that lose an opening game. - Of the 319 teams that won openers…166 went to the playoffs (112 won division titles).
- Of the 317 teams that lost openers…78 went to the playoffs (48 won division titles).
Note: There are a different number of winning and losing teams in season-opening games due to the inclusion of 2017 Week 2 victories by Miami and Tampa Bay, which was the season-opener for each team (their Week 1 meeting was postponed due to Hurricane Irma).
In 2021, the 14 playoff teams compiled a 9-5 record on Kickoff Weekend.

STARTING STREAKS: The Rams and Chiefs aren’t the only teams that have excelled in openers. Below is a sampling of other notable active NFL Kickoff Weekend milestones and streaks:
- Four other teams – the LAS VEGAS RAIDERS, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS and SEATTLE SEAHAWKS – have won each of their past three season-opening games. The Raiders visit the Chargers to open the 2022 season (4:25 PM ET, CBS).
- The reigning NFC North division champion GREEN BAY PACKERS open their season on the road against the MINNESOTA VIKINGS (4:25 PM ET, FOX). The Packers have won 58 games on Kickoff Weekend, the most in the NFL. The CHICAGO BEARS, who rank second with 55 wins in season-opening games, host the SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS in Week 1 (1:00 PM ET, FOX).
- The BALTIMORE RAVENS, who travel to play the NEW YORK JETS on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS), are 5-1 in Kickoff Weekend games since 2016 and have outscored their opponents 204-59 in that span.
-- NFL --
START ME UP: Some players have excelled in openers. Below is a sampling of notable individual performances on NFL Kickoff Weekend:
- Tampa Bay quarterback TOM BRADY has 43 touchdown passes in 19 career Kickoff Weekend games, the most Week 1 touchdown passes in NFL history. He also has 5,311 passing yards on Kickoff Weekend, trailing only DREW BREES (5,566 passing yards) for the most all-time. Brady is expected to become the first quarterback ever to make 20 career starts on Kickoff Weekend, surpassing Brees (19).
- Baltimore quarterback LAMAR JACKSON has compiled a 3-0 record as a starter and has nine touchdown passes and no interceptions for a 145.4 passer rating in four Kickoff Weekend appearances, the highest passer rating ever by a quarterback on Kickoff Weekend (minimum 75 pass attempts).
In four Week 1 starts, Kansas City quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES is 4-0 with 13 touchdown passes and no interceptions for a 133.7 rating, the second-highest rating ever in Week 1 games (minimum 75 pass attempts).
- Tampa Bay wide receiver JULIO JONES has 1,030 receiving yards in 11 career Kickoff Weekend games and is one of 11 players in league history with at least 1,000 career receiving yards in season-openers. If Jones records at least 70 receiving yards on Sunday Night Football at Dallas in his Buccaneers debut (8:20 PM ET, NBC), he will become the sixth player to reach 1,100 career receiving yards on Kickoff Weekend.
Jones also has 70 career receptions in Week 1 and can become the ninth player in league history to reach 75 career receptions on Kickoff Weekend.
- Last year on Kickoff Weekend, defensive end CHANDLER JONES recorded five sacks and two forced fumbles, becoming the third player to post at least five sacks in a Week 1 game since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic. In 10 career games on Kickoff Weekend, Jones – now with the Las Vegas Raiders – has 11 sacks, tied with Baltimore linebacker JUSTIN HOUSTON and two others for the sixth-most on Kickoff Weekend since 1982.
If either Jones or Houston records at least two sacks on Sunday, they would surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer LAWRENCE TAYLOR (12.5 sacks in 12 games) for the fourth-most sacks in Week 1 contests since 1982.
-- NFL -- HISTORY-MAKING DEBUT: Indianapolis quarterback MATT RYAN will be making his Colts debut when the team travels to play Houston on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). He enters the season ranking eighth in league history with 59,735 passing yards and needs 265 passing yards on Kickoff Weekend to become the second-fastest player ever (223 games) to reach 60,000 career passing yards. The players to reach 60,000 career passing yards in the fewest games in NFL history: PLAYER | TEAM(S) | GAMES TO REACH 60,000 PASSING YARDS | Drew Brees | San Diego Chargers, New Orleans | 215 | Peyton ManningHOF | Indianapolis, Denver | 226 | Philip Rivers | San Diego/L.A. -- NFL -- BURROW BECKONING: Last season, Cincinnati quarterback JOE BURROW led the Bengals to a Super Bowl LVI appearance after recording 4,611 passing yards and 34 touchdown passes in the regular season, both single-season franchise records. He also eclipsed 400 passing yards in three games, tied for the most in the league, including in each of his final two games of the regular season.
With at least 400 passing yards against Pittsburgh on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS), Burrow would become the third player ever to record at least 400 passing yards in three consecutive regular-season games, joining RYAN FITZPATRICK (2018) and DAK PRESCOTT (2020). He would also surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (four games) for the most games with at least 400 passing yards by a player in his first three seasons all-time. Burrow, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, enters the 2022 season with 7,299 passing yards in 26 career games. With 201 passing yards on Sunday, he will tie Pro Football Hall of Famer KURT WARNER (27 games) as the third-fastest player to reach 7,500 career passing yards in NFL history. -- NFL -- OFF AND RUNNING: Philadelphia quarterback JALEN HURTS led all quarterbacks with 784 rushing yards last season, while Baltimore quarterback LAMAR JACKSON finished second with 767 rushing yards. Each signal-caller will be making milestone starts on Kickoff Weekend.
In 49 career starts, Jackson has 20 rushing touchdowns. With a rushing touchdown at the New York Jets on Sunday (1:00 pm ET, CBS), he will tie STEVE GROGAN (21 rushing touchdowns) and STEVE MCNAIR (21) for the fourth-most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in his first 50 starts since 1970. Arizona quarterback KYLER MURRAY also has 20 rushing touchdowns in his first 46 starts and can tie Grogan and McNair against Kansas City on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, CBS).
The quarterbacks with the most rushing touchdowns in their first 50 career starts since 1970: PLAYER | TEAM | RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS | Josh Allen | Buffalo | 28 | Cam Newton | Carolina | 28 | Daunte Culpepper | Minnesota | 25 | Steve Grogan | New England | 21 | Steve McNair | Houston Oilers/Tennessee | 21 | Lamar Jackson | Baltimore | 20* | Kyler Murray | Arizona | 20# | *In 49 career starts | | | #In 46 career starts
Additionally, Jackson has compiled a 37-12 record through his first 49 starts. With a win on Sunday, he would tie TOM BRADY (38 wins) and DANNY WHITE (38) for the third-most wins by a quarterback in his first 50 career starts since 1970. Only PATRICK MAHOMES (40 wins) and Pro Football Hall of Famer KEN STABLER (40) have more.
In 19 career starts, Hurts has 13 rushing touchdowns. With a rushing touchdown at Detroit on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX), he will tie JOSH ALLEN (14 rushing touchdowns) and Grogan (14) for the second-most ever by a quarterback in his first 20 career starts. -- NFL -- DUAL-THREAT BACKS: Last season, New Orleans running back ALVIN KAMARA totaled 1,337 scrimmage yards (898 rushing, 439 receiving) and nine touchdowns (five receiving, four rushing). He is the only player in league history to record at least 700 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards in each of his first five seasons.
Carolina running back CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY recorded 785 scrimmage yards (442 rushing, 343 receiving) in seven games last season and, since entering the league in 2017, leads all players with 113.8 scrimmage yards per game. Each player enters the 2022 season with both a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown in nine career games. On Sunday, if either Kamara records a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown against Atlanta (1:00 PM ET, FOX), or McCaffrey does so against Cleveland (1:00 PM ET, CBS), they will become the first player ever to record 10 such games in his first six career seasons. NFL Teams Up with Renowned Artist and Activist Ruben Rojas to Encourage Fans to Choose Love | Rojas' signature "Love" sculptures will debut at stadiums for Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams, celebrating Kickoff and unifying two coasts for NFL season NEW YORK, September 7, 2022 — The NFL announced today a partnership with Colombian-American artist Ruben Rojas to spread a clear message of love this football season. In honor of the 2022 Kickoff game between the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills, Rojas created two signature "Love" sculptures that will be placed in both cities, unifying the two coasts for the season. The Los Angeles sculpture will be unveiled at SoFi Stadium for the Los Angeles Rams vs Buffalo Bills Kickoff game on September 8, while the Buffalo piece will debut in front of Highmark Stadium the week leading into the club's Home Opener on September 19.
With paint schemes that are unique to the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills, each "Love" sculpture is delicately hand crafted from sheets of aluminum. Using techniques such as laser cutting, manual molding, welding and sanding, the ten-foot sculptures optically look free floating, as Rojas wanted to highlight the power of love and how it can stand freely on its own.
"Love is a noun, a verb and a way of life, and I want to remind people how important it is to wake up every day and choose love," said Ruben Rojas. "I grew up watching the NFL and truly having a love for the game, not only as a fan but a player of the sport. Football brings together all walks of life. It doesn't matter where you come from or what you do. For those four quarters, we are all there for one reason: for the love of the sport. When fans walk into these stadiums, the sculptures will be a reminder and set the tone before and after the whistle blows."
The NFL first met Rojas this past February at Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. After seeing a commissioned piece he made during a Super Bowl week event and learning more about the artist's inspiring life mission and unique backstory, the NFL set out to collaborate with Rojas for the upcoming season to create and display pieces that encourage love and unity.
With an uptick in hate crimes and gun violence around the country, the league and Rojas' message of love and unity to kick off the start of the season is intentional. After a targeted attack against the Black community in Buffalo earlier this year, the NFL Foundation and the Buffalo Bills Foundation donated a combined $400,000 to charities benefiting the city's East Side community. During Thursday's Kickoff game, players from both the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams will wear helmets featuring "Choose Love" as part of the league's social justice helmet decal messaging this season, which will also include other phrases such as "End Racism," "Stop Hate" and "Inspire Change" among others.
"Ruben's artwork truly embodies the message echoed across the NFL family of 'Choose Love' in a time when it's so incredibly needed. We're proud to have these pieces displayed during Kickoff week," said Anna Isaacson, NFL SVP of Social Responsibility. "Through our work in supporting and uplifting communities across the country, including Los Angeles and Buffalo, our goal is to encourage fans to join the NFL family in our mission to eliminate hate and come together to support those who need it most."
To celebrate the two "Love" sculptures, the league created two pieces of video content on the partnership with Rojas and the powerful message his pieces convey. The first is a :60 spot from NFL Emmy Award winning Series NFL360, which features narration from Sterling K. Brown and visuals of both the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills supporting their communities. It will run in SoFi stadium and air right before the Lift Every Voice and Sing performance on NBC on September 8. The second piece of content is a five-minute profile that will air on NFL Network's NFL Now on the same day and highlight the power of love and football as a means of bringing people together. In the film, Rojas interviews Buffalo Bills' quarterback Josh Allen and Los Angeles Rams' cornerback Jalen Ramsey on what choosing love means to them.
Fans can bring home a commemorative piece of Rojas' artwork while giving back with the "Ruben Rojas x NFL Choose Love" T-shirt collection on NFL SHOP. The NFL will not profit from the sale of this unique Kickoff t-shirt. Charitable contributions are awarded by the NFL Foundation to support the league's social justice grant partners. The NFL will also collaborate with Rojas to auction several unique, one-of-a-kind sketch drawings on nfl.com/auction with 100% of proceeds supporting the league's social justice programs as well as Rojas' Beautify Earth nonprofit. For more information on the programs, visit www.nfl.com/inspirechange.
Fans attending the Rams-Bills Kickoff game will be able to see the LA "Love" sculpture on Upper American Airlines Plaza by the 'Countdown to Kickoff' stage any time after gates open at 3 PM PT. Those heading to SoFi Stadium should plan for heavy traffic given it will be a Thursday night with a large crowd expected and should plan to enter the stadium at least an hour before Kickoff to make it to their seats by 4:50 PM PT for a special championship celebration.

On Wednesday, September 7, America's Game: 2021 Los Angeles Rams premieres at 8:00 PM ET, followed by We Not Me: Sean McVay and the 2021 Los Angeles Rams at 9:00 PM ET. America's Game: 2021 Los Angeles Rams At 8:00 PM ET, America's Game: 2021 Los Angeles Rams premieres featuring in-depth interviews with defensive tackle Aaron Donald, quarterback Matthew Stafford and offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth telling the story of the Super Bowl LVI champion Los Angeles Rams.
Narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor and Los Angeles native Bryan Cranston, America's Game delves deep into the Rams' second Super Bowl title in franchise history. In the hour-long show, Donald, Stafford and Whitworth recount the season in their own words.
Among the topics discussed in America's Game: 2021 Los Angeles Rams:
- The trade for quarterback Matthew Stafford following the 2020 NFL season, and the relationship he built with wide receiver Cooper Kupp and head coach Sean McVay
- Not winning a game during the month of November following a 7-1 start
- The leadership of defensive tackle Aaron Donald and the lessons he learned from outside linebacker Von Miller following the win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Divisional Round
- Ending the team's six-game losing streak to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game
This year's edition of America's Game is the 56th episode of the long-running special which celebrates the Super Bowl champions.
Provided below are select quotes from America's Game: 2021 Los Angeles Rams:
- "The work that he puts in, it's not by chance that he's the best player in the NFL on defense. I had to play against it, now I get to see it up close and personal. It's as impressive as any athlete I've ever been around." – Matthew Stafford on Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald - "I feel like I accomplished everything in the NFL that I wanted to accomplish as a defensive player. The only thing I was lacking was being a world champion." – Aaron Donald on entering the 2021 NFL season - "I think in some ways when you get to have the start we did and add the players that we did, there is a little bit of a mentality of 'OK, it's just going to happen for you' and you lose a little bit of 'No, we have to go out and win every game and play at the level we're capable of regardless of who is on our football team.' We needed a little bit of a reset." – Andrew Whitworth on not winning a game in the month of November - "It's something I love. All I want is the ball in my hand." – Matthew Stafford on pressure moments with the game on the line - "He sat there and talked to me for 30 minutes. He was just saying for us to get to the Super Bowl, they're going to have to hear your voice. I remember him saying 'They're going to have to hear you.'" – Aaron Donald on the advice Rams outside linebacker Von Miller gave him after defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Divisional Round - "When you're as special as Aaron Donald and you set the tone each and every week with your play, guys are yearning to hear what you have to say." – Andrew Whitworth on the leadership of Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald - "Being in that moment, there is nothing like it. The reality is so much better than the dream." – Aaron Donald on winning the Super Bowl - "At least for me, until you get to that point it's hard to comprehend the level of sacrifice that it takes to get something like that done. We had so many guys on our team that were deserving of having a Lombardi Trophy attached to their careers. Being able to get that done for those guys was something that I'll always love." – Matthew Stafford on winning the Super Bowl We Not Me: Sean McVay and the 2021 Los Angeles Rams At 9:00 PM ET, We Not Me: Sean McVay and the 2021 Los Angeles Rams premieres on NFL Network, providing a detailed and close-up look at the Los Angeles Rams' second Super Bowl title in franchise history from the coaches' perspective.

- Joe DeCamillis – Special Teams Coordinator
- Eric Henderson – Defensive Line Coach
- Raheem Morris – Defensive Coordinator
- Kevin O'Connell – Offensive Coordinator (2021)

Provided below are select quotes from We Not Me:
- "It's been here before I got here in terms of what our organization believes in, what the players believe in and we're in this thing together…I think when you bring in those players and they realize how special this place is, it's an immediate buy-in." – Eric Henderson on the Rams' "We Not Me" mentality - "He's a football savant. But he's also probably a savant at communicating, and I think those two things blended together leading a football team probably helped him fast-forward maybe his success more than others." – Les Snead on Rams head coach Sean McVay - "I think we just decided with Matthew Stafford as our quarterback we were going to try to not even really re-invent our offense but just re-tool it in a way that allowed him to play quarterback and really put the game in his hands." – Kevin O'Connell on Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford - "When we say 'all in,' it doesn't necessarily mean we're all in for 2021 only. We're definitely all in to take advantage of the window we're in and we're well aware that we have a chance to be special in this window." – Les Snead on acquiring Von Miller and Odell Beckham Jr. - "I think across the board, I think this team was built to pick each other up and it was another great display of what Sean McVay leadership did for all of us." – Raheem Morris on the Rams overcoming a three-game losing streak during the season - "We knew what a great challenge it was going to be and we knew that I think there was something gratifying about having to get through them to get to the championship." – Sean McVay on defeating the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game - "Sometimes the best thing you can do as a coach when you have the right players is trust and give them some ownership and autonomy. They took some time individually to get it timed up and I could see they felt comfortable with it." – Sean McVay on the jet sweep on fourth down in Super Bowl LVI. Starting 11 - NFL Kicks Off 103rd Season This Week | Every story has an end, but in life, every end is a new beginning. The story last season was the endings. In 2021, 34 regular-season games were decided by a game-winning score on the final play, the most ever in a single year. The encore featured all four Divisional playoff games decided on the final play, and both conference championships as well as the Super Bowl each decided by three points. This week marks the beginning of a new story. After an action-packed offseason, the path to State Farm Stadium and Super Bowl LVII in Arizona begins Thursday when the NFL kicks off its 103rd year of competition. The starting 11 entering Week 1… 1. BILLS, RAMS TO CHRISTEN 2022 SEASON: Buffalo quarterback JOSH ALLEN returns to his native state when the BUFFALO BILLS begin the season against the defending Super Bowl champion LOS ANGELES RAMS on Thursday (8:20 PM ET, NBC). Allen, who has guided the Bills to consecutive AFC East titles, is 3-1 against teams from the NFC West, including a win in California over the 49ers in 2020. Meanwhile, the Rams’ SEAN MCVAY has won each of his five season-opening games as a head coach (2017-21). The last head coach to win his first six season-openers was MIKE SHANAHAN (1988-89, 1995-98). Incidentally, Shanahan hired McVay, then 24, as an assistant tight ends coach in 2010 with Washington. 2. NUMBER OF THE WEEK – 25: Twelve teams are expected to open their seasons with a starting quarterback age 25 or younger. Two of the NFL’s three youngest quarterbacks expected to start in Week 1, the 49ers’ TREY LANCE, 22, and the Bears’ JUSTIN FIELDS, 23, meet at Soldier Field on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX). Meanwhile, when New England plays at Miami on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS), MAC JONES, 23, meets TUA TAGOVAILOA, 24. Each of the last four Super Bowls have kicked off with a starting quarterback under 26. 3. MVP ROAD TOUR: All five active players with at least one Associated Press MVP open 2022 away from home. - TOM BRADY (Tampa Bay at Dallas, 8:20 PM ET, NBC) led the NFL in passing yards (5,316) and passing touchdowns (43) in 2021. He is expected to make his 20th career Week 1 start, surpassing DREW BREES (19) for the most by a quarterback all-time.
- LAMAR JACKSON (Baltimore at N.Y. Jets, 1:00 PM ET, CBS) has nine touchdown passes with no interceptions and a 150.2 rating in three career starts on Kickoff Weekend. Since 2019, the Ravens have outscored opponents 124-49 (+75) in those three contests.
- PATRICK MAHOMES (Kansas City at Arizona, 4:25 PM ET, CBS) is 4-0 as a starting quarterback on Kickoff Weekend with 13 touchdown passes, no interceptions and a 133.7 rating. He led the NFL with 22 touchdown passes on the road last season.
- AARON RODGERS (Green Bay at Minnesota, 4:25 PM ET, FOX), the reigning back-to-back NFL MVP, led all qualified passers with a 109.7 rating on the road in 2021.
- MATT RYAN (Indianapolis at Houston, 1:00 PM ET, CBS) makes his Colts debut and needs 265 passing yards to become the second-fastest player ever (223 games) to reach 60,000, trailing only DREW BREES (215 games).
4. SPOTLIGHT – INDIVIDUAL MATCHUP: According to Next Gen Stats, Las Vegas defensive end MAXX CROSBY led the NFL with 82 quarterback pressures in 2021. On Sunday at SoFi Stadium (4:25 PM ET, CBS) he’ll line up across an offensive line featuring Chargers tackle RASHAWN SLATER, who earned Pro Bowl and second-team Associated Press All-Pro honors as a 2021 rookie. Slater’s quarterback, JUSTIN HERBERT, was pressured on only 4.2 percent of his dropbacks last season, fourth in the league behind TOM BRADY (2.9), JOSH ALLEN (3.6) and PATRICK MAHOMES (3.8). Herbert’s 9,350 passing yards and 69 touchdown passes are both the most ever by a player in his first two seasons. 5. SPOTLIGHT – TEAM MATCHUP: TAMPA BAY at DALLAS on Sunday Night Football (8:20 PM ET, NBC) is the first instance in NFL history in which the league’s top two scoring offenses from the prior season (Dallas 31.2 points per game in 2021, Tampa Bay 30.1) will meet in Week 1. - In 2021, the Buccaneers led the NFL in touchdown passes (43) while the Cowboys’ defense led the league in interceptions (26), including 11 by cornerback TREVON DIGGS, most by an NFL player since 1981.
- The two clubs met in the annual kickoff game last season, with Tampa Bay defeating Dallas, 31-29. TOM BRADY (32 completions) and DAK PRESCOTT (42 completions, most ever in a Week 1 game) combined to complete 74 passes, the most in a single game in NFL history.
6. STREAK SPEAK: The KANSAS CITY CHIEFS have opened each of the past seven seasons (2015-21) with a victory, the NFL’s longest active Week 1 winning streak. - With a win on Sunday at Arizona (4:25 PM ET, CBS), Kansas City will tie Pittsburgh (eight, 2003-10) for the league’s fourth-longest season-opening winning streak since 1981, when the Cowboys established the NFL record of 17 consecutive Week 1 victories (1965-81).
- ARIZONA, meanwhile, has won four consecutive home games against head coach ANDY REID (regular-season wins in 2005, 2012 and 2014 as well as the 2008 NFC Championship Game).
- In Miami on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS), Dolphins head coach MIKE MCDANIEL makes his NFL debut at age 39, the same age as BILL BELICHICK at the time of his first game as an NFL head coach, in 1991. The Dolphins have three straight wins over New England and with a victory would have their longest winning streak against the Patriots since a five-game stretch from 1999-2001.
7. DID YOU KNOW?: Teams with quarterback TOM BRADY have won seven Super Bowls and in four of those seven seasons (New England in 2001, 2003 and 2014; Tampa Bay in 2020), Brady’s teams lost their Week 1 games. 8. UNDER-THE-RADAR STORYLINE: Houston quarterback DAVIS MILLS was in fourth grade at Mason Elementary School in Duluth, Ga., when MATT RYAN made his NFL debut for the Falcons in 2008. On Sunday, Mills and the Houston Texans will meet Ryan and his new team, the Indianapolis Colts (1:00 PM ET, CBS). - Last season, Mills ranked second among qualified rookie passers in rating (88.8), touchdown passes (16) and completion percentage (66.8) and third in passing yards (2,664). On Oct. 10 vs. New England, Mills became the first rookie quarterback to record at least 300 passing yards, three touchdown passes and a passer rating of 140-or-higher in a single game in NFL history.
9. TREND TIME: For the first time since 2014, when SHAUN HILL, JOSH MCCOWN and Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING opened that season under center, three quarterbacks are expected to start Week 1 games against former teams. - RUSSELL WILSON and the Denver Broncos conclude the Week 1 schedule when they meet the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on Monday Night Football (8:15 PM ET, ESPN/ABC). A nine-time Pro Bowler for the Seahawks, Wilson posted a 104-53-1 record as a starter and led Seattle to a pair of Super Bowl appearances, including a Super Bowl XLVIII win over Denver to conclude the 2013 season.
- BAKER MAYFIELD and the Carolina Panthers host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). The No. 1 overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield led the Browns to the 2020 playoffs.
- JOE FLACCO is expected to start when the Jets host the Ravens on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Flacco played 11 years in Baltimore, including six playoff appearances and a Super Bowl XLVII title.
10. THIS WEEK IN NFL HISTORY: Sept. 12, 1982 (40 years ago) – Rookie running back MARCUS ALLEN, a future Pro Football Hall of Famer, recorded 180 scrimmage yards (116 rushing, 64 receiving) and ran for a touchdown in his NFL debut, leading the Los Angeles Raiders to a 23-17 win over the defending Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park. 11. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST: Cincinnati wide receiver JA’MARR CHASE, who like Pittsburgh general manager OMAR KHAN graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie, La., begins his second NFL season on Sunday at home against the Steelers (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Chase trained with Pittsburgh running back NAJEE HARRIS prior to the players’ first-round selections in the 2021 NFL Draft and this week they square off for the fourth time in their combined college and NFL careers. Chase owns a 3-1 advantage in those games (1-1 with LSU against Alabama and 2-0 with the Bengals against the Steelers). Harris (1,667) and Chase (1,476) finished first and second, respectively, among rookies in scrimmage yards last season. NFL International Combine Returns To London | 44 athletes from 13 countries invited to participate The National Football League International Combine heads to London for the second consecutive year.
Mirrored after the annual NFL Combine staged in the United States, the invitational scouting showcase is designed to discover and evaluate potential NFL talent globally. Forty-four athletes will be selected to participate in a series of tests in front of NFL evaluators at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on October 3-4.
“Hosting the International Combine in London for the second year provides tremendous exposure for our great game,” said Roman Oben, NFL Vice President of Football Development. “The Combine allows us to evaluate new talent globally, shine a spotlight on our sport and provide an opportunity for participants to compete at the highest level.”
Athletes representing as many as 13 countries will be evaluated for a potential position in the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) program.
Instituted in 2017, the IPP program aims to provide elite international athletes the opportunity to compete at the NFL level, improve their skills, and ultimately earn a spot on an NFL roster.
Following the International Combine, a select number of athletes who meet specific performance requirements and display the potential to play in the NFL, will be invited to train in the United States for three months. This group will be reduced yet again following the training phase in the US and a select number will be allocated to NFL clubs for the 2023 season.
The International Combine is the first step in the process towards participation in the IPP program that has helped players such as EFE OBADA (UK/Washington Commanders), JAKOB JOHNSON (Germany/Las Vegas Raiders) and JORDAN MAILATA (Australia/Philadelphia Eagles) earn an NFL roster spot.
This year MARCEL DABO (Germany/Indianapolis Colts), ADEDAYO ODELEYE (United Kingdom/Houston Texans) THOMAS ODUKOYA (Netherlands/Tennessee Titans) and AYO OYELOLA (United Kingdom/Jacksonville Jaguars) will join the practice squads of their AFC South teams.
The 2022 International Combine will be the fourth iteration, after one in Australia in 2018 and in Germany in 2019. The NFL conducted a Combine in Mexico in October of 2021 for athletes unable to make it to London due to travel restrictions. This is the second time the event will be hosted in London; the combine will be closed to the public. 2021 was one of the most competitive seasons in league annals and was the first year of an enhanced season structure which featured each team playing 17 regular-season games. The 2022 season will be filled with memorable moments, as young players emerge, familiar faces continue their climb up the record books and teams vie to make their mark in the postseason. Every team enters the season with hope and a trip to Arizona for Super Bowl LVII in mind. Below are a few reasons why:
- Eighteen teams remained in Super Bowl contention on the final day of the 2021 regular season, tied for the most such teams since 2006 (20).
- Four teams clinched a division title after not winning their division last year (Cincinnati, Dallas, the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay) and at least two teams have won their divisions the season aftermissing the playoffs in 18 of the past 19 years.
- Cincinnati clinched the AFC North after finishing in last place in the division in 2020 and in 17 of the past 19 seasons, at least one team finished in first place in their division the season after finishing in last or tied for last.
- Seven teams clinched playoff berths after missing the postseason in 2020 (Arizona, Cincinnati, Dallas, Las Vegas, New England, Philadelphia and San Francisco) and since 1990 – a streak of 32 consecutive seasons – at least four teams have qualified for the playoffs in every season that were not in the postseason the year before.
- There were 21 overtime games last season, including three in Week 18 which featured teams winning in overtime to qualify for the postseason (Las Vegas, Pittsburgh and San Francisco), marking the first time since 1993 that multiple playoff teams won in overtime in the final week of the season.
The competitiveness of the 2021 regular season fed into one of the most exciting and dramatic postseasons to date.
- The Los Angeles Rams won Super Bowl LVI and for a 17th consecutive season, the NFL has a new Super Bowl champion, extending the longest streak without a repeat winner in league history. Only eight teams have repeated as champions since the first Super Bowl in 1967, with the 2004 Patriots (Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX) being the last team to accomplish the feat. It also marked the second-consecutive season in which a team won the Super Bowl in their home stadium, after Tampa Bay also did so in Super Bowl LV.
- From the Divisional Playoffs through Super Bowl LVI, six of the seven games were decided by exactly three points. The only game that wasn’t was Kansas City and Buffalo in the AFC Divisional Playoffs, which was decided by an overtime touchdown.
- The total margin of victory across the final seven playoff games (Super Bowl LVI, Conference Championship and Divisional Playoffs) was 24 points (3.4 points per game).
Among the many notable accomplishments players and coaches can achieve during the 2022 season …
- Tampa Bay quarterback TOM BRADY (84,520 passing yards and 624 touchdown passes) enters the 2022 season as the league’s all-time regular-season leader in both categories and can become the first player in NFL history with 100,000 career passing yards, including the postseason.
- Green Bay quarterback AARON RODGERS, who ranks fifth all-time in touchdown passes (449) and 10th in passing yards (55,360), can become the first player ever to win three consecutive Most Valuable Player awards.
- Indianapolis quarterback MATT RYAN (59,735 passing yards and 367 touchdown passes) can become the eighth quarterback ever with 60,000 passing yards and ninth quarterback all-time with 400 touchdown passes.
- Tennessee running back DERRICK HENRY needs 10 rushing touchdowns to become the fifth running back all-time with at least 10 rushing touchdowns in five consecutive seasons.
- Tampa Bay wide receiver MIKE EVANS needs 1,000 receiving yards to become the first player with at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first nine seasons in NFL history.
- Kansas City tight end TRAVIS KELCE (704 receptions and 9,006 receiving yards) can become the fifth tight end all-time with 800 receptions and fifth tight end ever with 10,000 receiving yards.
- Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman AARON DONALD (98 sacks) needs 12 sacks to become the fourth player since 1982 with at least 110 sacks in his first nine seasons.
- New Orleans defensive end CAMERON JORDAN needs seven sacks to become the sixth player since 1982 to record at least seven sacks in 11 consecutive seasons.

PEYTON AND ELI MANNING SHOW WHAT NEXT-GENERATION FOOTBALL LOOKS LIKE IN NEW NFL CAMPAIGN FOR YOUTH FOOTBALL | Promoting NFL Play Football, Super Bowl-winning brothers star alongside young flag and tackle players in three short films that compare past perceptions of game with what it is really like for kids today "Play Football" campaign encourages registration for both youth flag and tackle football August 24, 2022: Peyton and Eli Manning – acclaimed former NFL football quarterbacks, brothers and members of the Manning football dynasty – star in a new "Play Football" campaign, a fun and humorous initiative to promote the League's youth program, NFL Play Football. The campaign comically compares past perceptions of football with what the game is like for kids today while promoting registration for youth flag and tackle football. Created by 72andSunny, the campaign comprises three short films – "Conditioning," "Sheriff" and "Respect" – feature the Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks alongside young flag and tackle football players. In each spot, the past perceptions of football – characterized as Peyton's era, which was all about the grind, toughness and a "blood, sweat and tears" mentality – contrast with the present emphasis on creativity, inclusivity, self-expression, having fun and playing loose – embodied by Eli. Specifically, Peyton "The Sheriff" Manning stars as a fictitious Official NFL Ambassador to Youth Football, teaching kids the game the old school way, while Eli plays the role of his way cooler younger brother. With help from the kids, Eli teaches Peyton that he may know a lot about football but understands little about "the youths" today. A champion of youth football throughout his career, Peyton was a true creative partner in the "Play Football" campaign. He fed into the creative development process prior to production and throughout filming, always emphasizing the importance of growing the next generation of players. Peyton's son even has a cameo in the campaign to literally connect the past and the future within the Manning family.
"Growing up in New Orleans and watching my dad play for the Saints, I have always been a fan of the game of football," said NFL Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. "Throughout my many years playing, I enjoyed everything that I learned from the sport, and I want to share that with as many people as possible, especially young players. This 'NFL Play Football' initiative allows me to be a part of something that will impact the future of the game so kids can fall in love with the game the way I did."
Commenting on his memories growing up, NFL Legend Eli Manning said, "Football has played a big role in my life, and it's important to me to ensure that girls and boys of all ages get the opportunity to participate. Pickup games and flag football were the ways I first started playing and remain some of my best memories, so I was happy to join with the NFL in highlighting those aspects of the game in this campaign." The NFL celebrates youth and high school football year-round. Through camps, activities, NFL Flag and tackle leagues, its Play Football initiative provides a fun, engaging experience for players of all ages and skill levels, equipping young people with key life skills that are building blocks to success on and off the field. "Peyton and Eli are the perfect duo to star in this campaign because they bring a unique humor that effectively showcases the evolution of the game and just how fun and inclusive football has become," said Marissa Solis, SVP Global Brand and Consumer Marketing at the NFL. "An ongoing part of our strategy is to keep the image of the brand fresh, and these videos are not just meant to connect with our young fans and youth players, but really highlight how integral they are to the future of the sport."
The campaign will run throughout the upcoming NFL season in-game and on primetime, as well as on social and online across North America.
With the Fall season of flag football going from August through October, youth players can register for the season now until the end of the month. Youth tackle season starts in August and runs through November. For more information, visit PlayFootball.NFL.com.
