MIES (Switzerland) - FIBA has revealed its Commissions and Working Groups for the 2023-27 term following the first meeting of the newly elected Central Board.
Having assembled on the eve of the recent FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Final in Manila, Philippines, the Central Board has confirmed all appointments, with a strong emphasis on working towards gender equality, which has delivered a number of important milestones.
As per the amendments to the FIBA General Statutes enacted by the FIBA Mid-Term Congress in 2021, the requirement to have at least 30 percent representation of both genders in each Commission has been implemented. In fact, the Central Board has appointed 35 percent of women across all FIBA Commissions.
For the first time, three out of seven FIBA Commissions are Chaired by a woman, and in two of the other four Commissions, the Deputy Chair is a woman. It will also be the first time the FIBA Appeals Panel is Chaired by a woman.
Meanwhile, the Central Board has appointed three women to the FIBA Foundation Board for the first time, including FIBA Hall of Famer Michelle Timms. Additionally, one of the two FIBA Foundation Advisory Committees is Chaired by a woman.
The majority of the women appointed as FIBA Commission members are either holding the office of President or Secretary General in their respective National Federations or they have attended one of FIBA’s dedicated programs designed as part of the 'Women in Basketball' strategic priority, such as the FIBA Adelante, the FIBA WiLEAD, the FIBA Africa Women’s Seminar and the FIBA TIME-OUT program.
This includes newly co-opted FIBA Central Board member Sonja Vasic, whose experience and success will be a welcome addition to the Players’ Commission. The Serbian legend boasts two FIBA Women's EuroBasket titles and was MVP at the 2021 edition, as well as leading her country to other historic highs, such as a first Olympic appearance and maiden medal at Rio 2016, and also being a flag bearer at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Notably, there is a second term for another playing legend in Dirk Nowitzki, who will continue to be Chair of the Players' Commission. Sonja Vasic will serve as Deputy Chair.
To enhance global representation, the Central Board has decided that all five regions of FIBA are represented through a Chair or a Deputy Chair of a FIBA Commission.

The FIBA Appeals' Panel Chair is Ms. Diana Tesic (SRB/CAN) and the Deputy Chair is Mr. Marek Palus (POL). New members of the FIBA Ethics Panel were also elected at the recent FIBA Congress and the panel will be chaired by Mr. Scott Derwin (AUS). Bosch currently holds the best win-loss record (13-1) of any coach in the history of the league. ESL FACEIT Group (EFG), the leading esports and video game entertainment company, and the International Basketball Federation today announced the 61 nations participating in the second season of eFIBA, FIBA's official NBA 2K24 tournament.
Beginning October 3, National Federations across seven regional areas will battle it out in the Pro-Am game mode to secure a spot in the first-ever in-person eFIBA World Finals at DreamHack Winter and a share of the €50,000 prize pool.
"After a successful inaugural season and eFIBA's successful participation in The Olympic Esports Series, we are prepared to make the upcoming eFIBA Season 2 a landmark international event," said Frank Leenders, FIBA Media and Marketing Services Director General. "eFIBA allows us to reach new basketball enthusiasts and build a global community of players and fans who share a passion for the game."
eFIBA Season 2 is more than doubling its participating federations and expanding its competition schedule. The event includes online Regional Qualifiers from October 3 to November 2 and Regional Finals from November 7 to 9 across South East Asia, Oceania, Middle East, Africa, North America, South America, and Europe.

The winning nation from each Regional Final and the top two from Europe will secure a spot in the eFIBA Season 2 World Finals 2023, taking place live at the immersive gaming lifestyle festival, DreamHack Winter, from November 25-26 in Elmia, Jonkoping, Sweden.

SEPTEMBER 17, 2023 ULAANBAATAR (Mongolia) - Canada retained the Women's Series title as they picked up a nail-biting 16-15 victory over France to claim the fourth edition of the competition in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on September 17. Coming out of the regular season as the top seed, winning five Stops in the process, Canada came out in full force at the final leg. They went unbeaten on their way to the final, last beating USA in the Semi-Finals. They would face France yet again in the final, a repeat of their clash in the final last year. Katherine Plouffe put up a game-high 10 points in a final that came down to the wire, with Crozon putting up the game-winning shot at the buzzer to hand Canada their second Women's Series title. Michelle Plouffe had been immense for her side throughout the season and continued her dominance in Ulaanbaatar. She earned the title of MVP as she led the event in Player Value and points scored. She finished with 33 points while also grabbing 21+ rebounds over the two-day competition. The blockbuster final game marked the biggest season ever in the Women’s Series, taking it to 23 events over the year. Total prize money throughout the season reached over 1 million USD.

SEPTEMBER 15, 2023 ULAANBAATAR (Mongolia) - France (Men) and USA U21 (Women) won the FIBA 3x3 Nations League 2023 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on September 15. France (Men) continued their reign of dominance, picking up their whopping fourth Nations League title. They took care of business against the younger France U21 side 18-16 in the semi-finals to book a spot against Latvia in the final. Finding themselves on the losing side early on, the Frenchman surged back and took control. Their defensive effort book-ended a splendid campaign as they came away with a 16-13 victory. Florian Fortas put up a game-high 8 points while Sya Plaucoste contributed with 5.
Paul Billong and Sya Plaucoste were crowned Co-MVPs after a versatile effort from the duo. Plaucoste led the side in scoring with 25 with Billong just a point behind with 24.
On the women’s side, USA, with their U21 squad, won their first-ever Nations League title. They defeated the on-fire China in the final, coming back from a deficit to snatch victory 18-19 with a last-gasp winner from Morgan Maly. The 21-year-old finished with 6 points as did Mara Braun who was efficient from behind the arc.
Morgan Maly finished as top scorer for her side, third overall with 39 including the winning bucket. Her efforts earned her the MVP award.
This was the sixth edition of the Nations League, dedicated to players under the age of 23 (including U21 teams), which featured 13 different conferences and started in June.

USA reclaim pole position with 786.6 points after benefiting from their consistency at major tournaments over the last three summers. Finishing in fourth place at the FIBA Basketball World Cup where they outperformed former number one nation Spain, their run to the Semi-Finals came off the back of winning an Olympic title at Tokyo in 2021 and also taking bronze at the FIBA AmeriCup 2022. Recently crowned FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 champions Germany have another slice of history to enjoy as they step into the top three of the rankings for the very first time after moving up a massive eight places and onto 759.7 points. Their stunning success made all the more incredible because of the fact they made the journey to the top step of the podium without tasting defeat. Canada also have another reason to celebrate too, with their maiden FIBA Basketball World Cup medal fueling an even bigger rise of nine spots. They now occupy sixth position with 745.5 points. Serbia performed in outstanding fashion to make the title game and their second-placed finish gave their fans something to be proud of. Those supporters can also now enjoy and reflect on their country being a top five nation again as they move up a place and into fifth position on 755.6 points. SEPTEMBER 13, 2023MIES (Switzerland) - A number of nations including Belgium, Brazil, Nigeria and Mali are all celebrating positive rises in the latest edition of the FIBA World Ranking Women, presented by Nike. Fresh from making history and being crowned FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 champions, Belgium have moved up one spot and it's highly significant and cause for delight as they now secure their joint all-time high of sixth spot. With 654.6 points, they jump over neighbors France who are on 643.8 and the Cats are only 0.8 points behind Canada in what is an unchanged top five. China won the FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2023 and remain stable in second place. |

Brazil are back in the top ten after they soared seven places to eighth position on 612.6 points via their stunning FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2023 triumph. The South American nation won a record sixth title at the event as they beat USA in the Final. It's an identical climb of seven spots for Nigeria too, as they jump up to 11th with 528.9 points. That comes off the back of their dominance at the FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2023 where they won the silverware for the fourth time in a row. While Mali had to settle for third in the tournament, their continued consistency sees them move upwards again. They have been rewarded with a huge leap of 13 places to 16th with 362.1 points, while silver medalists Senegal enjoy an increase of 11 places to 316.3 points and are the last team occupying a berth in the top 20. Elsewhere on the list, Hungary's eye-catching run to the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023 Semi-Finals also sees them back in the top 20 with a rise of five places to 19th on 342.5 points. Meanwhile Germany played in the competition for the first time in 12 years and excelled on their return, helping them to accelerate 11 places to 25th on 298.5 points. Finally, Iran achieved a stellar rise of 26 places to 52nd after moving to 135 points after they made the title game of the FIBA Women's Asia Cup Division B 2023 in Bangkok.

NBA BOARD OF GOVERNORS APPROVES NEW PLAYER PARTICIPATION POLICY NEW YORK, Sept. 13, 2023 – The NBA Board of Governors today approved a new Player Participation Policy, which is intended to promote player participation in the NBA’s regular season. The new policy will take effect with the start of the 2023-24 regular season and enhance and replace the Player Resting Policy, which was implemented prior to the 2017-18 season. The Player Participation Policy primarily will focus on star players. A star player for purposes of the policy is any player who, in any of the prior three seasons, was selected to an All-NBA Team or an NBA All-Star team. This definition also applies, following a given season’s All-Star Game, to any player who is named an All-Star during that season. Under the policy, unless a team demonstrates an approved reason for a star player not to participate in a game, then, among other things, the team must: · Manage its roster to ensure that no more than one star player is unavailable for the same game. · Ensure that star players are available for all national television and NBA In-Season Tournament games. · Maintain a balance between the number of one-game absences for a star player in home and road games. · Refrain from any long-term “shutdowns” in which a star player stops playing games. · If resting a healthy player, ensure that the player is present at the games and visible to fans. The policy includes exceptions for injuries, personal reasons and pre-approved back-to-back restrictions based on a player’s age, career workload or serious injury history. |
