NBA ANNOUNCES PENALTIES FROM PISTONS-TIMBERWOLVES GAME

NEW YORK, April 1, 2025 – Detroit Pistons forward-center Isaiah Stewart has been suspended two games without pay for escalating an on-court altercation, it was announced today by Joe Dumars, Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations.  The length of Stewart’s suspension is based in part on his repeated history of unsportsmanlike acts.

Additionally, Pistons forward Ron Holland II, guard Marcus Sasser, Minnesota Timberwolves center-forward Naz Reid and guard Donte DiVincenzo have each been suspended one game without pay for their roles in the on-court altercation.

The incident began when Holland II committed a defensive foul on Reid with 8:36 remaining in the second quarter of the Timberwolves’ 123-104 victory over the Pistons on March 30 at Target Center. Following that foul, Reid pointed at and confronted Holland II. Holland II then pushed DiVincenzo and in response, DiVincenzo escalated the incident by shoving Holland II in the chest. The two players along with Reid became entangled and fell into the spectator stands. Stewart and Sasser then entered the altercation near the spectator stands and shoved DiVincenzo and Reid, which resulted in a continued escalation of the situation. For their roles, all five players were assessed technical fouls and ejected from the game.

Reid and DiVincenzo will serve their one-game suspensions tonight when the Timberwolves visit the Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena. Stewart will begin serving his two-game suspension Wednesday when the Pistons visit the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center. Holland II and Sasser will also serve their one-game suspensions Wednesday night.

Australia win double at FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2025

MARCH 30

SINGAPORE - Australia (men and women) completed the double yet again as they won the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2025 on March 30.

The men’s side of the tournament culminated with a high-octane battle between Australia and China. Both teams traded blows, with Alex Higgins-Titsha and Hanyu Gyo leading the charge, finishing the game with 11 points each. The action only got more frenetic near the end with a point separating the sides.

Gyo drilled a two to answer back on Australia’s go-ahead shot, putting the game at 18 - 17 in their favor. Higgins-Titsha tied things up in the paint. With a two-pointer being a potential decider, both teams attempted tough shots, but it was Australia who would be fouled in their shot, putting them on the line. An assessed technical foul would offer the Gangurrus 3 free throws, of which they would make the first two to seal their repeat at the 3x3 Asia Cup in Singapore.

The Australian women secured an incredible three-peat against a crafty Japan with a 21 - 17 victory in the final. The Gangurrus utilised their strength and size to their advantage through Marena Whittle and Alex Wilson to take an early lead, but Japan would bounce back through a collective effort. Their ball movement and quick scoring posed an obstacle for the opposition but it wouldn’t last long. The ever-consistent Aussies kept applying pressure and assumed the lead back around the halfway mark and never let up.

Anneli Maley put the finishing touches on what was a dominant masterclass to cinch a 21 - 17 result and secure a historic gold for Australia.

In the third-place games, New Zealand (men) book-ended their scorching performance from range with another offensive outburst against an equally potent Japan. A close game near the end with both teams finding success from deep, the lights-out Te Tuhi Lewis found Aidan Tonge to close the game in their favor. A 21 - 18 result would put the men from New Zealand on the podium with a third-place finish.

On the women’s side, China took care of business against a 3-person squad of the Philippines. Mengyun Zhou and Yuyan Li put up 7 points each in their 21 - 11 victory to secure their spot on the podium.

Australia’s Dillon Stith was an absolute force in the paint for the Aussies. He locked down defensively and battled in the paint on every possession. He came in clutch for the team on numerous occasions, most notably in the semi-final against New Zealand with his 13 points and two clutch shots to seal the game.
He would take home MVP honors and lead the Men’s team of the tournament alongside ew Zealand’s Te Tuhi Lewis whose scorching shooting led them to silver and Japan’s Ryo Ozawa who delivered history making performances in Japan’s journey to Bronze.

For the women, Alex Wilson (Australia) was versatile as ever, leading her side in scoring with 34 points throughout the tournament. Her effort on both ends of the floor took the Aussies a step above the competition in their three-peat run.

She took home the MVP award and join the women’s team of the tournament alongside Japan’s Fuyuko Takahashi who lead the women’s competition in scoring with 39 points and played a huge role in their run to silver and Mengyun Zhou who was the offensive powerhouse for China as they finished with bronze.

The following year, the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2027 is expected to welcome 40 teams from around the world over a seven-day event. More details about the event venue for FIBA 3x3 World Cup in 2027 will be shared in due course.

Commenting on the partnership, Alex Sanchez, FIBA 3x3 Managing Director, said: “We are very excited and fortunate to have such strong partners in Singapore, who share our passion for 3x3 basketball and the delivery of world-class events. The Singapore Sports Hub, a renowned venue for major sporting events, will provide the perfect setting to host the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup and the 3x3 World Cup Qualifiers in 2026. Extending our partnership with FIBA through 2026 and 2027 reflects the popularity of basketball as one of our most popular team sports in Singapore. With these marquee tournaments alongside our grassroots basketball programs, we aim to benefit our TeamSG basketball players while also ensuring that basketball remains accessible as a sport for all in Singapore.”

Through these efforts, SportSG continues to ensure that basketball in Singapore remains accessible, vibrant, and competitive at all levels.

NBA and FIBA to move forward on exploration of new professional men's basketball league in Europe

MARCH 27, 2025

MIES/NEW YORK (Switzerland/USA) - The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) today announced their joint exploration of a new professional men’s basketball league in Europe that would bring the sport to more European fans and accelerate the game’s growth across the continent. The NBA and FIBA will continue discussions that began more than a year ago with prospective investors, teams, arena developers and commercial partners.

Under the plan being explored, the new league would be integrated into the current European basketball landscape, with teams also participating in their respective national leagues. In addition to permanent teams, the league would offer clubs a merit-based pathway to qualification through the European basketball ecosystem.

As part of a new league, the NBA and FIBA would also plan to dedicate financial support and resources to the continued development of Europe’s basketball ecosystem, including club team academies and the NBA and FIBA’s existing programs to develop aspiring players, coaches and referees at all levels of the game.

The announcement was made by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis following the NBA Board of Governors meeting in New York and the FIBA Executive Committee meeting earlier this month in Mies, Switzerland.

"The European basketball community is proud of its seven-decade history of international club competitions and the elite talent it develops," said Zagklis.

"Yet given the sport’s popularity and the success of national team competitions, there is untapped potential in European club basketball. A new league in Europe would combine the NBA’s business acumen with the international expertise of FIBA to attract new basketball fans and investors alike, maximize club benefits, and establish synergies for the benefit of all stakeholders."

"The NBA and FIBA are uniquely positioned to build on the rich tradition of European basketball," said Silver. "We look forward to collaborating with FIBA to explore the creation of a new league for fans across the continent."

The NBA and FIBA will provide additional updates at a later date.

NEW YORK, March 19, 2025 – The NBA today announced San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes as the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner for the month of February.  Barnes and his wife, Brittany, made a $250,000 donation to AlamoPROMISE – a program that provides the cost of tuition and fees for eligible students in Bexar County, eliminating financial barriers to higher education and making college a reality.  Additionally, Barnes played a key role in bringing a newly renovated basketball court and playground to Davis White Northeast Neighborhood Park as part of the Play ATX initiative in Austin, Texas.  Barnes will receive the David Robinson trophy, and the NBA will donate $10,000 to the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum.

The donation from the Barnes family will help support students at St. Philip’s College in San Antonio.  St. Philip’s is designated as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).  In collaboration with AlamoPROMISE through the “last-dollar” program, scholarships will cover tuition and fees for up to three years.  Now in its fifth year, the program has supported over 23,000 students with tuition and college expenses.  The donation was made in honor of Black History Month and at an event last month, Barnes presented the donation alongside San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and officials from St. Philip’s College and the Alamo Colleges District.  This is a cause that’s important to Barnes who has served as a board member for the NBA Foundation, the league’s first-ever charitable organization since 2020.  Barnes’ donation recipient of choice, San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum, also serves as a grantee partner of the NBA Foundation.

As part of the Play ATX initiative, Barnes joined others from the San Antonio Spurs, Austin Parks Foundation and the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, unveiling the transformed space at Davis White Northeast Neighborhood Park.  Barnes’ involvement was above and beyond in making this project a reality.  In addition to the ribbon-cutting, Barnes led a basketball clinic for 40 youth athletes from local schools.  Upgrades included new basketball goals, improved lighting and a fully renovated playground with brand-new equipment and enhanced accessibility, creating a long-lasting impact for the Austin community.

“Throughout my career I've had the privilege of experiencing the power of community and support,” said Barnes.  “Now, as part of the San Antonio community, my wife Brittany and I are honored to give back and help invest in the future of this incredible city.  Partnering with AlamoPROMISE and St. Philip’s College is my way of ensuring that young people here have the resources and opportunities to succeed.  It’s about creating lasting change, building bridges, and supporting the next generation of leaders.  My wife and I are both deeply committed to being advocates for this community, and together, we’re excited to make a meaningful impact and help open doors for local college students to chase their dreams.”

This is the second time that Barnes has been named a Community Assist Award winner.  Barnes was previously named a 2019-20 End of Season NBA Cares Community Assist Award recipient.

The NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award honors Bob Lanier, an NBA League Office executive and NBA Cares Ambassador for more than 30 years.  He had an enormous influence on the NBA family and young people globally, traveling the world to teach the values of the game and making a positive impact through his kindness and generosity.  The legacy he built will continue to live on through the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award recognition, which honors the next generation of players’ commitment to positively impacting their community throughout the NBA season.  Over the course of each NBA season, there is an offseason winner followed by seven monthly award winners.  The offseason winner receives the Bob Lanier trophy, and each monthly winner receives the David Robinson trophy.  The NBA also makes a donation to the charity or foundation of the player’s choice.  To learn more, please visit https://communityassist.nba.com/.
