The NBA today unveiled the official courts that teams will play on throughout the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament, which tips off on Friday, Nov. 3 with a doubleheader on ESPN as the Knicks visit the Milwaukee Bucks at 7:30 p.m. ET and the Denver Nuggets host the Dallas Mavericks at 10 p.m. ET.

The courts, which will be used for Group Play and the Quarterfinals, showcase a bold and distinctive design scheme leaguewide, making it instantly clear to fans when a game carries NBA In-Season Tournament implications.  The unified look represents the first time that the league has implemented an alternate court for all 30 teams and the first time that any NBA team has played on a fully painted court with no woodgrain details.  This will also mark the first time that the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans and Portland Trail Blazers will play on an alternate court in the history of the franchises.

The courts, featuring vibrant and bold colors, share the following design details:

  • A fully painted court, edge-to-edge
  • A larger-than-life NBA Cup at center court, prominently displaying to players and fans the new trophy that will be awarded to the champion
  • A contrasting wash of color from lane-to-lane, creating a 16-foot wide “runway” across the court
  • NBA Cup silhouettes in the lanes
  • Team logos across the NBA Cup at center court and on the baselines

The inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament will tip off with Group Play on Friday, Nov. 3 in NBA team markets. The single-elimination Knockout Rounds begin with the Quarterfinals (Dec. 4 and 5), also played in team markets, before the tournament culminates at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with the Semifinals (Dec. 7) and Championship (Dec. 9).  Broadcast partners ESPN and TNT will combine to air 14 games during Group Play.  More information about the In-Season Tournament is available here, and teams’ outfitting schedule for the first half of the season is available on NBA LockerVision.

CHICAGO BULLS’ AYO DOSUNMU NAMED NBA CARES BOB LANIER COMMUNITY ASSIST AWARD OFFSEASON WINNER

-NBA to donate $10,000 to Ayo Dos Foundation, a non-profit founded by Dosunmu to provide opportunity and inspiration to Chicago youth-

-Dosunmu to receive the Bob Lanier Trophy to honor the life, legacy and leadership of Bob Lanier-

NEW YORK, October 26, 2023 – The NBA today announced Chicago Bulls guard Ayo Dosunmu as the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award offseason winner for his efforts to uplift and inspire the youth in his hometown of Chicago.  At the start of each season, the NBA will recognize one offseason winner and seven monthly winners for their outstanding work in the community.  The offseason award winner will receive the Bob Lanier Trophy and the monthly winners will receive the David Robinson Trophy.

Serving the Ayo Dos Foundation’s mission to create safe, accessible spaces for growth and education, Dosunmu spent his offseason working to bridge the gap of access to opportunity engaging more than 1,500 youth in Chicago.  As a native of Chicago and now playing for his hometown team, Dosunmu made it his mission to spread a message of hope, determination and possibility to the youth in his community and support their passion, talent and hard work.  In May, Dosunmu hosted a youth basketball clinic in partnership with Motorola for 60 youth from Black Kids Predict.  Led by Dosunmu and Bulls Youth Hoops coaches, the youth participated in skill stations focused on various fundamental basketball skills, while using technology developed by Black Kids Predict to enhance the experience and showcase the intersection of sports and technology.

In July, Dosunmu hosted his 2nd annual “Ayo’s Block Party” in honor of his childhood friend, Darius Brown, who Dosunmu lost at a young age due to gun violence.  Alongside Beyond the Ball and Urban Male Network, Dosunmu hosted a basketball clinic for 120 youth, which is double the youth from the previous year, and celebrated organizations that provide safe places for youth.  As part of the block party, youth received basketball skill instruction from Dosunmu and Bulls Youth Hoops coaches, free lunch, equipment donations, and Beyond the Ball and Urban Male Network each received a $5,000 grant donation to support their organization’s mission.

In continuing Dosunmu’s focus around youth and education, he launched an incentive program called “Ayo’s Scholars” at his former elementary school, Beasley Academic Center.  To celebrate the launch of the program, Dosunmu hosted a back-to-school pep rally in August for over 1,000 students.  The pep rally consisted of contests, chance to win prizes and special appearance from Benny the Bull and Chicago Bulls entertainers.  Additionally, Dosunmu committed to give every student that makes the honor roll tickets to a Bulls home game during the 2023-24 season.  In September, Dosunmu partnered with Nordstrom and Shoes That Fit to donate Nike sneakers to over 350 students at Philip Randolph Elementary School.  He assisted kids with shoe size fitting, took photos with the students and led some energetic students in exercise drills.  Dosunmu believes in providing students with a new pair of shoes to begin the school year.

“This recognition means the world to me, not just as a basketball player, but as a proud representative of this incredible city,” said Dosunmu.  “Being able to give back to the same city that raised me and made me the man I am today is an unforgettable feeling.  I dedicate this award to the youth of Chicago – dream fearlessly and stay focused, and the opportunities will be endless.”

Dosunmu will be surprised at practice by students from Beasley Academic Center as the winner of the Bob Lanier Community Assist Award on Thursday, Oct. 26.  He will be recognized on-court during the Bulls’ Nov. 6 game vs the Utah Jazz.  Chicago Bulls EVP of Basketball Operations Artūras Karnišovas will present him with the award.

The offseason NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award honors Bob Lanier, an NBA League Office executive and NBA Cares Ambassador for more than 30 years.  He had an enormous influence on the NBA family and young people globally, traveling the world to teach the values of the game and making a positive impact through his kindness and generosity.  The legacy he built will continue to live on through the offseason NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award recognition, which honors the next generation of players’ commitment to positively impacting their community throughout the NBA season.  To learn more, please visit https://communityassist.nba.com/.

CLASSIC FORMAT RETURNS FOR 2024 NBA ALL-STAR GAME

– Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference With Traditional Scoring on Feb. 18 in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLISOct. 25, 2023 – The NBA today announced changes to the format for the 2024 NBA All-Star Game, which will be played on Sunday, Feb. 18 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, home of the Indiana Pacers.

As the league celebrates basketball’s deep roots in the state of Indiana, the 73rd NBA All-Star Game will feature the return of both the classic matchup between the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference and the traditional scoring system with four 12-minute quarters.  The voting process to determine the NBA All-Stars will remain the same, with 12 players selected from each conference.

While the NBA All-Star Game will no longer have an untimed fourth quarter or conclude when one team reaches or surpasses the Final Target Score, the teams will continue to compete to win each quarter for a charitable organization of their choosing.

NBA All-Star Game team captains will still be named to lead their respective teams.  The captains will be the All-Star starter from each conference who receives the most fan votes in his conference during NBA All-Star Voting presented by AT&T.

The 2024 NBA All-Star Game will air on TNT in the United States and reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 50 languages.  Indianapolis will host NBA All-Star for the first time since 1985.

NBA IMPOSES PENALTY ON PHOENIX SUNS

FOR EARLY FREE AGENCY DISCUSSIONS

NEW YORK, October 25, 2023 – The NBA announced today that the Phoenix Suns violated league rules governing the timing of this season’s free agency discussions and that the league has rescinded the 2024 second-round Draft pick (Denver’s own) that Phoenix acquired from Orlando in a prior trade.  This outcome reflected a finding that Phoenix engaged in free agency discussions involving Drew Eubanks prior to the date when such discussions were permitted.

The team fully cooperated with the investigation.

NBA DEBUTS SHORT FILM “THE HEIST” TO FUEL ANTICIPATION FOR INAUGURAL NBA IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT

– Campaign Features NBA All-Stars Anthony Davis, DeMar DeRozan, Darius Garland, Draymond Green, Kawhi Leonard, Julius Randle and Trae Young, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and Narrated by Actor Michael Imperioli –

NEW YORK, Oct. 25, 2023 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) today announced the global premiere of “THE HEIST,” the league’s brand campaign celebrating the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament, which tips off on Friday, Nov. 3.

“THE HEIST” cast includes seven NBA All-Stars – Anthony Davis, DeMar DeRozan, Darius Garland, Draymond Green, Kawhi Leonard, Julius Randle and Trae Young – alongside Emmy Award-winning actor Michael Imperioli, as they execute an elaborate scheme to steal the first-ever NBA Cup.  “THE HEIST” is streaming now across all @NBA social platforms and on the NBA App.

“THE HEIST showcases the NBA’s newest annual tradition to fans through a fun and familiar story arc,” said NBA Chief Marketing Officer Tammy Henault.  “The film introduces the tournament framework through the lens of an elaborate heist, ultimately ushering in this new competition that will add yet another layer of energy and excitement to the NBA calendar.”

Set in a Las Vegas casino, the film begins with Michael Imperioli hatching a plan for “something that’s never been done before – 30 teams, one NBA Cup.”  Such high stakes will require a team with a special set of skills and a calculated strategy. As he unfurls the plan, he introduces the NBA stars, each with their own technique to grab the Cup for their squad.

As Anthony Davis sits at a blackjack table, he flips a three-of-clubs card toward the In-Season Tournament bracket – a nod to the Lakers forward’s jersey number.

In the distance, DeMar DeRozan, dressed in a smooth black and white suit, traverses the casino floor inconspicuously light on his feet, similar to how he plays his game.  As DeRozan enters an elevator, he runs into Trae Young, a “guy with ice water in his veins,” a reference to the sharpshooting guard’s ability to make shots in clutch moments.  Both DeRozan and Young realize they’re after the same thing and chaos ensues.

Imperioli’s narration continues as he introduces a pair of laser-focused lookouts in Darius Garland and Julius Randle, hiding in plain sight in a stylish ride out front.

Disguised as a casino security guard, Draymond Green pushes a cart with the elusive NBA Cup hidden inside.  As Green navigates through security, into the kitchen and out to the casino lobby, his movements are picked up by inside man Kawhi Leonard and the others looking to take the Cup.  As the moment seems right to make “THE HEIST,” the NBA Cup is revealed next to Imperioli, stolen by the mastermind himself.  He turns and says, “looks like you’ll have to play for it,” as the players take in their missed opportunity and realize the fierce competition that lies ahead in the new NBA In-Season Tournament.

“THE HEIST” storyline will continue with additional chapters to debut ahead of the Knockout Rounds and Semifinals and Championship rounds featuring Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson alongside Imperioli. The spot will highlight the final race to the NBA Cup, as Johnson declares he is “all in” with an effortless flip of a poker chip.

Check out behind-the-scenes action here, showcasing the cast on set and discussing the filming of “THE HEIST.”  Created in conjunction with creative agency Translation, the spot was directed by Karim Huu Do and shot by cinematographer Chayse Irvin.  “THE HEIST” will air across 214 countries and territories and will be translated into more than 15 languages.  Additional :30-, :15- and :10-second versions will also air and the film will be supported across channels with complementary creative that will come to life in out-of-home, digital, social, audio and print assets.

The full cast of “THE HEIST” includes:

  • The Mastermind: Michael Imperioli (“Goodfellas,” “The Sopranos,” “The White Lotus” and more)
  • The Heavy: Anthony Davis (Los Angeles Lakers)
  • The Sly Guy: DeMar DeRozan (Chicago Bulls)
  • The Ice Man: Trae Young (Atlanta Hawks)
  • The Lookouts: Julius Randle (New York Knicks) and Darius Garland (Cleveland Cavaliers)
  • The Vet: Draymond Green (Golden State Warriors)
  • The Inside Man: Kawhi Leonard (LA Clippers)

The inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament will tip off with Group Play on Friday, Nov. 3 in NBA team markets and culminate with single-elimination Semifinals (Dec. 7) and Championship (Dec. 9) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.  Broadcast partners ESPN and TNT will combine to air 14 games during Group Play.  The first Tournament Night (Nov. 3) will feature a doubleheader on ESPN with the Knicks visiting the Milwaukee Bucks at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by the Denver Nuggets hosting the Dallas Mavericks at 10 p.m. ET.  More information about the In-Season Tournament is available here.

- Starting Five Fan Voting, Presented by Dell Technologies, Begins Friday, October 27 -

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. (October 23, 2023) — The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced the 20 watch-list candidates for the 2024 Bob Cousy Award. Named after Class of 1971 Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, the annual honor, now in its 21st year, recognizes the top point guard in Division I men’s college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

“The point guards that have been named to the 2024 Bob Cousy Award Watch List truly embody the skills and characteristics that made Bob Cousy the ‘Houdini of the Hardwood,’” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. “We look forward to watching their leadership and playmaking abilities take center stage and working alongside Bob Cousy and the selection committee to narrow down the watch list throughout the season.”
