Spain make history: New number one in FIBA World Ranking Men, presented by Nike

NOVEMBER 18, 2022

MIES (Switzerland) - History has been made as Spain is the new number one team in the latest FIBA World Ranking Men, presented by Nike. With USA holding the number one spot for over 12 years, Spain is only the second team to top the ranking since its introduction in 2010.

Spain’s jump from No. 2 to the top spot resulted from their consistency in recent years in each game of each competition. Spain captured the titles at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 while also reaching the Quarter-Finals of the Tokyo OlympicsTheir qualification campaigns since 2017 have also been very solid to help gain more points.

The United States of America meanwhile did claim the gold at the Olympics but they dropped out of the World Cup in the Quarter-Finals and finished third at the FIBA AmeriCup 2022.

Spain's most recent window for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Qualifiers was once again successful, winning a thriller in Italy and against Netherlands in the European Qualifiers to book their ticket to Asia.

A key component to Spain's consistency has been their ability to evolve as a national team over the years and develop a large pool of players through the FIBA qualifiers. Sergio Scariolo has used 29 players with nine of them playing in six or more games and three with nine appearances.

Spain lead the ranking with 758.6 points followed by the United States with 757.5 points. The rest of the top 10 remained unchanged: Australia, Argentina, France, Serbia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Greece and Italy.

Brazil's win over the United States and subsequent blowout of Mexico allowed the South Americans to jump one spot from 14 to 13 - swapping places with Poland.

The biggest riser in the ranking is Thailand as they won all four of their games in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Pre-Qualifiers in the November window to move up 10 spots to 92nd in the world.

Riga extend winning streak to 25 games, win FIBA 3x3 World Tour Riyadh Masters 2022

NOVEMBER 12, 2022

RIYADH (Saudi Arabia) - Riga (LAT) have now won 25 games in a row on the pro circuit after taking home the first edition of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Riyadh Masters on November 11-12, 2022.

After a slow start this season, Riga (LAT) have triumphed in their last 3 Masters (MontrealCebu and Riyadh), a Challenger and a Super Quest in the last 2 months.

The Riyadh Masters were not a walk in the park for the 4 Latvians, who won gold with the exact same roster at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics last year. Their narrow 20-18 win against Omaha 3Ball (USA) in the semi-finals was a sign of things to come. Facing the number one 3x3 team in the world Ub Huishan NE (SRB) in the final, Riga were down 18-17 with a minute to go.

Their star player Nauris Miezis then rose to the occasion with a first two-pointer to take the lead and a second for the win with the game tied at 19, a Maurice Lacroix buzzer beater all the way from the Enlio logo, far beyond the arc. In fact, Miezis scored his team's last 7 points and recorded a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, a rare statistical performance in the first-to-21, 10-minute game. The number 11 player in the world led his team in player value and was named MVP of the Riyadh Masters.

Four-time World Champion Dejan Majstorovic scored a team-high 6 points for Ub in the final. His teammate - number one 3x3 player in the world Strahinja Stojacic - was held to just 5 points. He still led all players both in points and player value in Saudi Arabia.

With their success, Riga have now clinched their spot in the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Final, which will take place in Abu Dhabi on December 10-11. A total of 6 teams have mathematically earned their ticket to the United Arab Emirates: Ub Huishan NE (SRB), Liman Huishan NE (SRB), Antwerp (BEL), Riga (LAT), Amsterdam HiPRO (NED) and Vienna (AUT). The last 6 tickets will be decided during the last Masters of the season, which will be held in the Hong Kong  on November 26-27.

In the individual contests, Belgian sniper Thibaut Vervoort dominated the Chooks to Go Shoot-out Contest, while US pro dunker Chris Staples won the Visit Saudi Dunk Contest.

NOVEMBER 7, 2022

MIAMI (USA) -  USA's men and Canada's women won the second edition of the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup in Miami, USA on November 7, 2022.

In the men's category, USA successfully defended their AmeriCup title after defeating Puerto Rico in the final (21-18). Former college star and NBA player Jimmer Fredette scored the gold-winning two-pointer and his teammate Canyon Barry was named MVP of the competition after leading USA in scoring in Miami.

Jorge Matos - who won silver with Puerto Rico - and Leonardo Branquinho - who led the bronze-winning Brazil in scoring - joined Barry on the Team of the Tournament.

In the women's category, Canada won their first AmeriCup title after beating Brazil in the final (15-11).  The Women's Series winner and Final MVP, Michelle Plouffe, led all players in scoring in the title game with 9 points and added yet another MVP silverware to the trophy cabinet.

###

Exciting, urban and innovative, 3x3 is inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide and is considered the world’s number one urban team sport. Steered by FIBA, games see two teams of three players face off on a basketball half-court.

It was played successfully for the first time in international competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and since then has benefited from the launch of a yearly city-based FIBA 3x3 World Tour and national-team FIBA 3x3 World & Continental Cups.

On July 24, 2021, 3x3 made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games.

MILWAUKEE BUCKS’ PAT CONNAUGHTON RECEIVES OFFSEASON NBA CARES COMMUNITY ASSIST AWARD

-NBA to donate $10,000 to the Pat Connaughton Foundation-

NEW YORK, November 4, 2022 – The NBA today announced Milwaukee Bucks guard Pat Connaughton as the Offseason NBA Cares Community Assist Award winner in recognition of his sustained efforts to create access to youth sports in his communities prior to the 2022-23 season.  This is the sixth year the NBA has presented an offseason award to a player for his impactful work from the end of the regular season to the start of the following season.

Serving the Pat Connaughton Foundation’s mission to inspire and motivate young athletes to put their dreams into action – whatever their dreams may be, Connaughton spent his offseason creating spaces where youth could play basketball and receive premiere skill development and character-building experiences through several clinics in the Milwaukee and Boston areas.  The first two clinics took place in July at St. Augustine Prep in Milwaukee and Mukwonago High School in Mukwonago, WI. At St. Augustine, The Pat Connaughton Foundation donated $50,000 to create brand new basketball courts, providing a high-end gym for inner city students and community members to have a safe space to play.  The new courts come as part of his Connaughton Courts program, which refurbished basketball courts to help transform the communities they serve.  Connaughton unveiled one of the two new courts this summer, with the second to be completed in 2023.  The third clinic was hosted in August at Connaughton’s high school alma mater, St. Johns Prep, on the very first Connaughton Court built just outside of Boston in Danvers, MA.  As a hands-on clinic leader, Connaughton reached nearly 500 youth basketball players through this summer’s clinics, building on his dedication to shaping the next generation of leaders through sport.

On Sept. 7 the Pat Connaughton Foundation announced its partnership with Reagan High School in Milwaukee to provide a new Connaughton Court.  The court is set to open in 2023 as part of the response to direct need of an under-resourced student body not only for a space to have quality physical education, but to access fully equipped facilities for student-athletes to use for years to come.  An outgrowth of his commitment to his hometown and the community that raised him, Connaughton and The Pat Connaughton Foundation plan to announce more court renovations in 2023.

“As a multi-sport athlete, sport has taught me some of life’s most valuable lessons - hard work, teamwork, accountability, discipline, and commitment,” said Connaughton. “I want to give back to the communities I call home and provide our next generation with opportunities and life lessons through the lens of youth sports. My goal is always to show kids their potential and inspire them to dream big. Whether they want to be a professional athlete, a scientist, a teacher, or anything else when they grow up, it’s possible. The lessons and values that they learn on the court translate across their lives and can help them achieve incredible things. I am honored to be in a position and have a platform that allows me to inspire the next generation of student athletes and shape them into our future leaders.”

Bucks and Fiserv Forum President Peter Feigin and Bucks General Manager Jon Horst will present Connaughton with the award during an oncourt ceremony before the team’s home game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. CT.  The NBA will donate $10,000 to the Pat Connaughton Foundation.

The NBA Cares Community Assist Award recognizes an NBA player each month during the season who best reflects the passion that the league and its players share for giving back to their communities.  It honors the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson, who improved the community piece by piece.  At the end of the 2022-23 regular season, the Bob Lanier NBA Cares Community Assist Award (formerly Seasonlong NBA Cares Community Assist Award) winner will be announced. The seasonlong recognition was renamed earlier this year as tribute to late Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and NBA Global Ambassador, Bob Lanier, for his dedication to teaching NBA values and making a positive impact on communities across the globe.  Nominees will include Connaughton, the offseason winner, the six monthly winners and three additional players selected for their exceptional community work.  To learn more, please visit http://www.nba.com/communityassist/.

STATEMENT FROM NBA COMMISSIONER ADAM SILVER

NEW YORK, Nov. 3, 2022 – NBA Commissioner Adam Silver today issued the following statement:

“Kyrie Irving made a reckless decision to post a link to a film containing deeply offensive antisemitic material.  While we appreciate the fact that he agreed to work with the Brooklyn Nets and the Anti-Defamation League to combat antisemitism and other forms of discrimination, I am disappointed that he has not offered an unqualified apology and more specifically denounced the vile and harmful content contained in the film he chose to publicize.  I will be meeting with Kyrie in person in the next week to discuss this situation.”

The NBA today announced that all 15 games on Monday, Nov. 7 will be available for free on the new NBA App.  All 30 NBA teams will be in action with games starting at 7 p.m. ET with the Washington Wizards vs. Charlotte Hornets and all subsequent matchups tipping off 15 minutes apart.

International Migration Report 2022 and Evolution Report highlights globalization of the game

NOVEMBER 2, 2022

NEUCHATEL/MIES (Switzerland) – The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) and FIBA have published the eleventh edition of the International Basketball Migration Report 2022, along with the second edition of the Evolution Report which covers seasons from 2016-17 to 2021-22.

This significant milestone for FIBA and CIES, with this year's migration and evolution reports, continues to emphasize the global nature of basketball, a sport played by millions of players worldwide, supported by FIBA's 212 National Federation members.

The International Basketball Migration Report 2022 provides insight into the global migration of players for the 2021-22 season. FIBA's knowledge and data on international transfers have been combined with the CIES Sports Observatory's renowned expertise in analysis to document the international migration of players for this season, as well as migratory trends and tendencies of the sport across the globe.

The second edition of the Evolution Report represents an extension of the highly-productive fusion of FIBA's data and insight into international transfers and the well-known analytical abilities of the CIES Observatory and is now also able to shine a light on the 19 principal international leagues across the entire six-year window since the project originally tipped off (2016-17 to 2021-22).

The 2021-22 season saw a new record in transfers, with 10,000 documented throughout the season, involving 8,133 players. This clearly illustrates that the globalization of basketball is more important than ever, with the impact seen last season from COVID-19 now reverting to more of a pre-pandemic theme.

Some of the main highlights from this year's findings and the evolution report include:

A record of international transfers of players
There were more than 10,000 international transfers during the 2021-22 season - the first time this number has been reached in the history of the IBMR. Numbers for both men and women have witnessed a significant increase.

A cross-border league called the BNXT League was created between Belgium and the Netherlands next to their respective domestic leagues, in cooperation with the respective National Federations.

A bigger impact from foreign players
The number of foreign players remained high. Spain, Germany, Israel, France and Italy continue to be the leagues with more foreigners than nationals in their league. Spain remains the league with the highest percentage of foreign players and the highest number of nationalities. However, the average minutes per game of these players was the lowest. In 13 out of 16 leagues, clubs relied heavily on foreign players, with playing time of an average of 20 minutes or more.

Domestic leagues during the last 6 years
With the exception of the 2019-20 season, the data remained largely consistent for each league in respect of the number of games played, the average player age and average player height. There has been a constant growth in the total number of points scored in the leagues combined. The reasons are considered to be the pace of the game becoming even more intense, along with more offensive styles of play.

NBA IMPOSES PENALTIES ON PHILADELPHIA 76ERS

FOR EARLY FREE AGENCY DISCUSSIONS

NEW YORK, October 31, 2022 – The NBA announced today that the Philadelphia 76ers violated league rules governing the timing of this season’s free agency discussions and that the league has rescinded Philadelphia’s second-round pick in each of the 2023 and 2024 Drafts.  The rescindment of two Draft picks reflected findings, following an investigation, that the 76ers engaged in free agency discussions involving two players (P.J. Tucker and Danuel House, Jr.) prior to the date when such discussions were permitted.

The team fully cooperated with the investigation.
