Japan complete double at FIBA 3x3 U17 Asia Cup 2022 |
OCTOBER 17, 2022 KUALA LUMPUR (Malaysia) - Japan dominated with double delight as their men's and women's teams won the sixth edition of the FIBA 3x3 U17 Asia Cup, which took place inside the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 13-16, 2022. It marked the first time ever a country wins both categories in the same edition of this competition. In the men's category, Japan repeated as champions - previously played at the U18 level - as the event returned after a three-year break. Unbeaten Japan cruised through to the final, but faced a tougher test against India in a thrilling final. It was bucket for bucket before Japan scored the final five points to prevail 21-17. Young gun Eijiro Ogawa was named MVP after scoring 42 points across five games and he was joined in the team of the tournament by Harsh Dagar (India) and Temuulen Tumur, who led Mongolia to the bronze medal after a tense 21-18 win over Chinese Taipei. On the women's side, Japan won their first U17 Asia Cup title since 2016 after silencing the home fans with a comfortable 21-7 win over Malaysia. Prodigiously talented 16-year-old Kanon Suzuki cemented her MVP with a game-high 8 points to lead Japan, who had survived a major scare in the semis against Chinese Taipei. Suzuki, who scored 31 points in five games, was also named in the team of the tournament alongside Hui Lin (Malaysia) and Yu Lan Chang, who powered Chinese Taipei to the bronze medal with a 21-17 win over Mongolia in a reverse of the men's result. ### Exciting, urban and innovative, 3x3 is inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide and is considered the world’s number one urban team sport. Steered by FIBA, games see two teams of three players face off on a basketball half-court. It was played successfully for the first time in international competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and since then has benefited from the launch of a yearly city-based FIBA 3x3 World Tour and national-team FIBA 3x3 World & Continental Cups. NBA legends Bob Love (Southern alum) and Willis Reed (Grambling State alum) have been named honorary captains of the 2023 NBA HBCU Classic. Love and Reed will represent their alma maters leading up to the game. “My pathway from Southern to the NBA has opened countless doors for me,” said Love. “I am proud to support the NBA in using the game of basketball to celebrate the rich history of HBCUs and drive opportunity for the next generation of leaders both on and off the court.” “I credit my career in part to my time at Grambling State,” said Reed. “The HBCU Classic will provide what is to most a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play on the NBA stage and serve as a platform for those interested in the business side of the game to gain industry insight and make lasting connections.” The teams were selected in collaboration with the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The NBA HBCU Classic continues the league’s ongoing, year-round commitment to advancing educational, career and economic opportunities in partnership with HBCU institutions as well as increasing support and awareness for HBCU athletics. Earlier this year, the NBA hosted its first-ever HBCU Classic as part of NBA All-Star 2022 in Cleveland. Classic participants Howard University and Morgan State University both received donations of $100,000 to support the student experience. Over the course of the week, 11 HBCU students served as paid NBA interns across disciplines as part of the league’s HBCU Event Shadow program. During NBA All-Star, more than $1 million was contributed to support the HBCU community through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and academic institutions. This summer, 60 students participated in the league’s inaugural NBA HBCU Fellowship program, which provides career development opportunities in the business of basketball for undergraduate and graduate students from HBCUs. The NBA family has annually supported HBCUs through additional scholarship programs, business case competitions, mentorship, networking and internship opportunities since the NBA’s involvement in the founding of TMCF more than 35 years ago. "We are extremely excited and honored to represent Grambling State University at the NBA HBCU Classic," said Grambling Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Trayvean Scott. "Grambling State is an iconic name brand. We knew when this opportunity was presented to us, it was the right decision to not only bring SWAC basketball to the NBA All-Star, but to continue to bring awareness and increased support to HBCU athletics." "I am very excited for our student-athletes, fans, supporters and alumni that we will take part in the second NBA HBCU Classic during NBA All-Star,” said Southern Director of Athletics, Roman Banks. "This allows Southern University’s brand to be showcased globally and we appreciate the NBA's commitment to supporting our HBCU institutions. We are excited for everyone to see one of the great and historic rivalries between Grambling State and Southern University and to showcase the excellence and talent that has come to define student-athletes from the SWAC and HBCUs."

China were defeated in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Final 83-61 by the world's top ranked team USA, who top the latest ranking with 848.8 points. By reaching the podium for the first time since 1994, losing only to the World Champion USA, China jumped five spots to second with 676.5 points. Hosts Australia finished third at home in Sydney in the flagship event of women's basketball and retained the third place spot in the ranking with 668.3 points. Fourth place in the latest ranking now belongs to Spain, who fell two spots to 661 points as they failed to qualify for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup after taking second in 2014 and third in 2010 and 2018. Canada finish off the top five in fifth with a one-spot drop to 648.9 points, being surpassed by China at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. The biggest climber in the Top 10 was Puerto Rico, who rose six spots to 10th by reaching the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Quarter-Finals. This was arguably the biggest positive surprise of the event. In 2018, they finished 16th-placed at the World Cup held in Spain. Bosnia and Herzegovina registered the largest rise in the top 50 as they jumped 10 spots to 14th place as they reached their first FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup - and took 12th place. Mali also had a big rise as they moved up nine slots to 26th as they returned to the global showcase and finished 11th after having placed 15th in 2010. For more information about the method used in the calculation of the FIBA World Ranking Women, please refer to the "How it Works" section. Due to COVID-19, several tournaments were postponed. These include the Olympics (qualifying and final tournaments), played in 2021 rather than 2020. To ensure that these postponements have no lasting impact on the ranking and to keep the standard format of a four-year cycle, the dates of the affected matches are altered to the year that they were originally due to take place, before the time decay factor is computed.
