NFL to Celebrate the League's International Diversity with Helmet Initiative in Weeks 4 and 5

Infographic of International Flags Represented on the Back of Helmets: [/PublishingImages/Pages/NFL-to-Celebrate-the-League%27s-International-Diversity-with-Helmet-Initiative-in-Weeks-4-and-5/International%20Flag%20Infographic.png]International Flag Infographic.png

Over 200 players, coaches and executives from across the League will pay homage

to their heritage with international flag display on helmets

The National Football League (NFL), in partnership with over 200 players, coaches and executives, will celebrate the growing number of nationalities and cultures that make up the fabric of the League with an initiative that will see players take the field with international flags on their helmets.

Players across the league will proudly wear a helmet decal of the country or territory's flag that represents their nationality or cultural heritage across Weeks 4 and 5.

In the player-led initiative that looks to showcase the global influence on the League and recognize the impact that those contributing nations across the world have had on NFL rosters today, fans will see over 50 nations and territories represented.

Players can choose to wear, alongside the American flag, the flag of an international country or territory if they lived there for two years or more, or have a parent or grandparent who were born there.

Players flying the flag for the initiative include Kyler Murray (Arizona Cardinals - South Korea), Amon-Ra St. Brown (Detroit Lions – Germany) and Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins – Samoa & American Samoa).

Coaches and executives across the League, including the Spanos Family (Los Angeles Chargers - Greece), Bill Belichick (New England Patriots - Croatia) and Paraag Marathe (San Francisco 49ers - India), will also mark their connections to countries across the world, wearing pins displaying their flag of choice on game day.

"The NFL is proud of the extensive collection of nationalities and heritage of its players across the League," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "We recognize the many cultures they represent and the excitement they bring to their home fans, which ultimately helps grow our game."

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray will display the flag of South Korea in tribute to his mother, Missy, added: "I'm proud to play with the flag of South Korea on my helmet. It's a great way to honor my mom, honor my heritage and highlight the diverse backgrounds that make up the NFL."

Miami Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa, who will don the Samoan flag in a nod to his parents' and grandparents' cultural heritage, said: "I am proud to represent my heritage with the Samoan flag on my helmet. My family and my culture are very important to me. Our name means everything, and it's an honor to be able to represent not only my family's name but also my Samoan heritage as an NFL player. I hope that in doing so, I can encourage kids from the islands to keep pursuing their dreams and to also be proud of their culture and where they've come from."

Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown will display the German flag and had this to say: "My mom is from Germany, so having German grandparents, speaking German, every summer the heritage and culture has been a part of my whole life. I'm half German. It's a part of me. I love it. In my young career, I have already been amazed to see the influence my culture and heritage has had and I'm excited to continue to see the German representation have an impact within our game."

The Starting 11 -- Unpredictable NFL rolls into October; league marks international milestone in Week 4

The NFL’s unpredictability is part of what makes it so exciting. And as the league enters Week 4, this much is certain: Much more thrilling uncertainty lies ahead.

This week, the MIAMI DOLPHINS can improve to 4-0 for the first time since 1995, when Pro Football Hall of Famers DON SHULA and DAN MARINO held the reins. The PHILADELPHIA EAGLES could advance to 4-0 for the first time since 2004, when they earned a Super Bowl berth.

What else could happen? Stay tuned because the NFL is as unpredictable as the bounce of an oblong football.

The Starting 11 entering Week 4…

1.     ALLEN, JACKSON AMONG SUNDAY’S HEADLINERSLAMAR JACKSON leads the league with 10 touchdown passes and JOSH ALLEN ranks second with nine. They meet Sunday when BUFFALO (2-1) visits BALTIMORE (2-1) at M&T Bank Stadium (1:00 PM ET, CBS). … Those individuals also are the only two players in the NFL’s 103-year history to reach both nine touchdown passes and 100 rushing yards over the first three games of a season. Allen (No. 7 overall) and Jackson (No. 32) were each selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft and they’re two of just four quarterbacks in NFL history to record at least 20 rushing touchdowns and 90-or-more touchdown passes over their first 61 NFL games, joining DAUNTE CULPEPPER and DAK PRESCOTT. … This season, the Ravens lead the NFL with 33.0 points per game while the Bills’ defense has allowed the league’s fewest yards per game, 214.0.                                                                     2.     NUMBER OF THE WEEK – 100: The NFL this week marks a significant milestone: The league’s 100th game played outside the United States. MINNESOTA (2-1) and NEW ORLEANS (1-2) face off at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (9:30 AM ET, NFL Network), the 41st regular-season international game in NFL annals. The league also has played 59 preseason international contests. Next week in London, the GREEN BAY PACKERS will become the 32nd NFL team to play a regular-season international game. 3.     NOTE THAT MATTERS: Eight teams that missed the 2021 playoffs have started 2-1 or better, including the CHICAGO BEARS (2-1) and NEW YORK GIANTS (2-1), who meet on Sunday at MetLife Stadium (1:00 PM ET, FOX). … For only the second time since the NFL added a 32nd franchise in 2002, 30 teams have at least one win through the first three weeks; it also happened in 2012 (30 of 32). Since the 1970 merger, the league has had just two winless teams through Week 3 on only five occasions (1988, 1989, 1990, 2012 and 2022). 4.     SPOTLIGHT – INDIVIDUAL MATCHUP: Four-time Pro Bowl guard QUENTON NELSON lines up across from fellow first-round draft choice JEFFERY SIMMONS on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX) when INDIANAPOLIS (1-1-1). meets TENNESSEE (1-2). Nelson has proved crucial in helping JONATHAN TAYLOR lead the NFL with 2,097 rushing yards, nearly 500 more than the next-closest player, since the beginning of 2021. Meanwhile, over the same period, Simmons ranks fourth among NFL defensive tackles with 10.5 sacks and third with 1,036 snaps. 5.     SPOTLIGHT – TEAM MATCHUP: The JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (2-1) and their edge rushers, rookie No. 1 overall draft choice TRAVON WALKER and Pro Bowler JOSH ALLEN, visit PHILADELPHIA (3-0) and an explosive Eagles offense with tackles LANE JOHNSON and JORDAN MAILATA on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS).
  • Through three games, Jacksonville’s defense is tied for the NFL lead in both takeaways (eight) and interceptions (six). The Jaguars had nine takeaways and seven interceptions all of last season. On the other side of the ball, Philadelphia’s offense leads the NFL with 447.0 yards per game.
  • This season, the Jaguars defense under coordinator MIKE CALDWELL has allowed the NFL’s fewest rushing yards per game, 55.0. The unit faces a Philadelphia offense that leads the league with 158.3 rushing yards per game since the beginning of 2021.
  • Jaguars head coach DOUG PEDERSON returns to the city he led to its first Super Bowl championship.

6.     STREAK SPEAK: Two young quarterbacks enter Week 4 looking to extend impressive streaks. First, on Thursday Night Football against the Dolphins (8:15 PM ET, Prime Video), JOE BURROW bids for his sixth in a row at home with at least 300 passing yards and two-or-more touchdown passes. Only DREW BREES (three times) and Pro Football Hall of Famers PEYTON MANNING and KURT WARNER have done that. … JUSTIN HERBERT is aiming for his seventh straight road game with at least 300 passing yards. On Sunday at Houston (1:00 PM ET, CBS), Herbert can join RICH GANNON as the only players ever with such a road streak. 7.     DID YOU KNOW?: Including the postseason, Kansas City’s PATRICK MAHOMES has engineered at least one touchdown drive in 75 of 77 career starts. The only two starts in which his opponent’s defense kept the Chiefs out of the end zone were Oct. 24, 2021, at Tennessee, and Super Bowl LV against Tampa Bay. 8.     UNDER-THE-RADAR STORYLINE: An offensive staff meeting room at Oklahoma’s Barry Switzer Center is a nursery for NFL quarterbacks. That’s where quarterbacks meet daily with Sooners coaches, and where three current NFL starting quarterbacks honed their technique. Entering this week, no other college has produced more NFL starters.

  • Two of those quarterbacks, KYLER MURRAY and BAKER MAYFIELD, reunite when ARIZONA (1-2) travels to CAROLINA (1-2) for a Sunday tilt (4:05 PM ET, FOX). In December 2015, Murray transferred to OU believing he would sit out the 2016 season while Mayfield played what was to be his final year for the Sooners. However, in summer 2016, the Big 12 voted to give Mayfield an additional year of eligibility. Murray had to wait two years to replace Mayfield, who won the 2017 Heisman Trophy and was selected No. 1 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Then, Murray won the 2018 Heisman and went No. 1 overall in 2019.
  • JALEN HURTS, who like Murray and Mayfield also transferred to Oklahoma, replaced Murray as the Sooners’ starter in 2019. And while Hurts didn’t win the Heisman or go No. 1 overall, he enters this week among early season NFL MVP candidates, leading the NFC’s lone undefeated team. Hurts, who has 167 rushing yards and 916 passing yards, is the first player in NFL annals to average at least 50 rushing yards per game and 300-or-more passing yards per game over his team’s first three contests of a season.

 9.     TREND TIME: The GREEN BAY PACKERS (2-1) host the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (1-2) on Sunday at Lambeau Field (4:25 PM ET, CBS). Green Bay is looking for its 15th consecutive regular-season home win. Since 2000, only three franchises (New England four times, Baltimore and the St. Louis Rams) have strung together home winning streaks that long. 10.  THIS WEEK IN NFL HISTORY: Sept. 30, 2007 (15 years ago) – The Giants match a single-game league record with 12 sacks, the most by an NFL team since 1985, en route to a 16-3 win over the Eagles. OSI UMENYIORA records six of New York’s sacks and forces two fumbles as the Giants take an important step toward an eventual Super Bowl victory over undefeated New England in Arizona. 11.  AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST: The LOS ANGELES RAMS (2-1) visit the SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (1-2) on Monday Night Football (8:15 PM ET, ESPN). The teams have combined to represent the NFC in three of the last four Super Bowls. Late last season, the teams split a pair of significant games, the 49ers winning an overtime season finale at SoFi Stadium, 27-24, to clinch a playoff berth, and the Rams winning the NFC Championship Game, 20-17, to clinch a Super Bowl berth. … The Week 4 NFL slate features two other rematches from recent postseasons: A Super Bowl LV rematch, KANSAS CITY (2-1) vs. TAMPA BAY (2-1) on Sunday Night Football (8:20 PM ET, NBC), and MINNESOTA (2-1) vs. NEW ORLEANS (1-2) in London, rekindling memories of the Minneapolis Miracle in the 2017 NFC Divisional playoffs.

NFL and IFAF Expand List of Global Flag Football Ambassadors

Global ambassador program to amplify international advancement of flag football

Jalen Hurts, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Eli Manning among latest superstar ambassadors

The National Football League (NFL) and the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) today announced the second team of Global Flag Football Ambassadors to amplify and support the long-term growth of the game worldwide.

Jalen Hurts, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Eli Manning are among the latest to join an all-star team of men and women, including current American and flag football players, Legends, coaches and officials as ambassadors who will work together to further raise the profile and promote the unique values of one of the world’s fastest growing sports.

The Flag Football Ambassadors team – first announced ahead of the NFL season kickoff earlier this month - supports the combined global efforts of the NFL and IFAF to increase awareness, interest, and participation in flag football internationally and drive forward the development of the game.

The National Football League announced earlier today a transformation of the Pro Bowl, renaming the tentpole event as ‘The Pro Bowl Games.’ Taking place in Las Vegas in 2023, The week-long celebration of player skills will feature an exciting new format that spotlights Flag football. In addition to the AFC vs NFC game on Sunday, The Pro Bowl Games will integrate Flag throughout the week, including the Play Football Opening Night and NFL FLAG Championships, which was created in partnership with RCX Sports and will feature the top girls’ and boys’ youth Flag teams from across the country and around the world.

Currently played by men, women, boys, and girls of all ages in more than 100 countries around the world, flag football is poised for even greater expansion as the cornerstone of the NFL’s domestic and international participation and development strategies. Momentum is growing behind the sport following its debut at The World Games in Birmingham, Alabama earlier this year with IFAF preparing to launch the biggest-ever cycle of elite international flag competition, including full continental representation for the first time in 2023. Flag is a fast-paced, non-contact, creative and highly skilled format that benefits from being easily accessible and inclusive making it the perfect vehicle to attract new players, accelerate growth and promote the message of football for all.

The newest members of the Global Flag Football Ambassador team are:

  • Desiree Abrams – First woman to officiate the Super Bowl, NFL Replay Assistant
  • Jalen Hurts – Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback
  • Eli Manning – 2X Super Bowl Champion, New York Giants Legend
  • Amon-Ra St. Brown – Detroit Lions Wide Receiver
  • Osi Umenyiora – Super Bowl Champion, New York Giants Legend

The latest additions not only highlight the scope and ambition of the group to grow the game worldwide but also point to the impact international players have on the NFL itself. Osi Umenyiora, the first British-born player to win a Super Bowl, was born in London to Nigerian parents and now works to raise the profile of the game in Europe and Africa. Amon-Ra St. Brown also has international ties - as a German national who speaks fluent German and French, thanks to his German-born mother, he is gaining a powerful following in Europe.

Desiree Abrams, meanwhile, in addition to being the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl has made a name for herself on the international stage, including as a member of the referee team to oversee flag football at The World Games, as well as the IFAF World Flag Football Championships in 2018 and 2021 and the IFAF Women’s World Championship in 2022. In 2016 she founded the National Women’s Football Officials Association that seeks to accelerate opportunities for female referees in football.

“Flag football continues to give many people, who otherwise would not have a chance to play the game, an opportunity to play competitively,” said Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. “As an advocate for women’s sports, I admire how the platform is inclusive, giving talented and skilled women and girls across the world a way to get active on the field.”

“Flag football is an incredible opportunity for the next generation across the globe to be introduced to our sport and learn skills that transcend football,” said Detroit Lions Wide Receiver, Amon-Ra St. Brown.” I’m honored to be a part of the efforts to expand interest in flag in only my second NFL season and I know people in Germany and around Europe are excited to get involved in this fantastic game.”

“I’m honored to be part of the Global Flag Football Ambassadors team,” said Two Time Super Bowl Champion, Eli Manning. “I think it’s important that football continues to provide an inclusive and exciting entry point, but what flag football is showing is that it’s also so much more than that. It’s a team sport that people can continue playing into adulthood at the elite level, and we have some incredibly talented athletes participating. The growth both here in the U.S. and worldwide is exceptional.”

“I’m really honored to be named a global flag ambassador,” said NFL Legend Osi Umenyiora. “I believe flag football is a fantastic and easily accessible way to enjoy our great game, and to expand it to countries where football isn’t traditionally played. In the UK and in Africa, where I run talent training camps, it is growing at an incredible pace and I can only see it getting bigger and better as more people are exposed to this exciting, fast-paced and creative format. Being involved with the NFL internationally for the last several years, I cannot wait to see what we are able to accomplish together.”

Thursday Night Capsule - Miami Dolphins at Cincinnati Bengals

THURSDAY NIGHT PREVIEW:

MIAMI DOLPHINS (3-0) AT CINCINNATI BENGALS (1-2)

Week 4 of the 2022 NFL season gets underway on Thursday, September 29 (8:15 PM ET, Prime Video) as the Miami Dolphins (3-0) visit the Cincinnati Bengals (1-2) in a matchup between the AFC’s last undefeated team this season and the conference’s representative in last season’s Super Bowl. Miami leads the all-time regular-season series, 17-7, and the home team has won each of the past five meetings between the two clubs.

Miami defeated Buffalo, 21-19, in Week 3 to advance to 3-0 for the first time since 2018 and looks for its first 4-0 start to a season since 1995. Quarterback TUA TAGOVAILOA passed for 296 yards with one touchdown in the teams’ last meeting against Cincinnati and ranks second in the NFL this season in passing yards (925) and tied for third in touchdown passes (eight). He aims for his third start in a row with a completion percentage of 70-or-higher and a passer rating of 120-or-higher. Wide receivers JAYLEN WADDLE (342 receiving yards) and TYREEK HILL (317) rank second and third, respectively, in receiving yards this season. Last week, Waddle recorded four receptions and his third-career game with at least 100 receiving yards. He has 123 receptions in 19 career games, second-most by a player in his first 20 career games in NFL history. Hill registered seven receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown in his last game against the Bengals (2021 AFC Championship with Kansas City) and has a receiving touchdown in six of his seven career games on Thursday Night Football.

Linebacker MELVIN INGRAM totaled two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in Week 3 and recorded a sack in his last game against Cincinnati (2021 AFC Championship with Kansas City). He has 4.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss in eight career Thursday games. Cornerback XAVIEN HOWARD recorded two passes defensed last week and aims for his sixth in a row with a pass defensed. He recorded an interception in the teams’ last meeting and has 27 interceptions since 2016, most among all players. In Week 3, safety JEVON HOLLAND set career highs in tackles (10) and sacks (1.5) and added two passed defensed and his first career forced fumble.

Cincinnati earned its first win of the season in Week 3 as quarterback JOE BURROW passed for 275 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 114.9 rating. Burrow has 4,467 passing yards (319.1 per game) and 30 total touchdowns (26 passing, four rushing) in 14 career home starts and can become the first quarterback since DREW BREES (2015-16) with at least 300 passing yards and two touchdown passes in five consecutive home games. He also aims for his third in a row on Thursday Night Football with at least 300 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Running back JOE MIXON has 13 touchdowns (11 rushing, two receiving) in his past 12 home games and totaled 115 scrimmage yards (93 rushing, 22 receiving) and a touchdown catch in his last home game against Miami (Week 5, 2018). Wide receiver JA’MARR CHASE recorded his 15th-career touchdown reception in Week 3, tied for the second-most among all players since he entered the league last season, while wide receiver TYLER BOYD led the team with 105 receiving yards. Boyd registered a 72-yard touchdown reception in the teams’ last meeting and aims for his third in a row against Miami with a touchdown.

Defensive end TREY HENDRICKSON recorded his first 2.5 sacks of the season and a career-high two forced fumbles in Week 3. He is one of three AFC players (MYLES GARRETT and T.J. WATT) with at least 16 sacks (16.5) since 2021. Linebacker LOGAN WILSON registered his seventh-career interception last week, most among linebackers since he entered the NFL in 2020. Safety JESSIE BATES notched his 11th-career interception in Week 3 and recorded an interception against Miami in the teams’ last home game in Cincinnati (Week 5, 2018).
