NBA AND NBPA ANNOUNCE RECOGNITION PAYMENTS FOR FORMER ABA PLAYERS LAS VEGAS, July 12, 2022 – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) announced today a new, jointly-funded program to provide recognition payments for pioneer players from the American Basketball Association (ABA). Approximately 115 former ABA players, who played at least three seasons and did not qualify for a benefit from the NBA players’ pension plan, will receive payments under this new program. "Our players have a genuine sense of appreciation for those who paved the way and helped us achieve the success we enjoy today," said NBPA Executive Director Tamika Tremaglio. "We have always considered the ABA players a part of our brotherhood and we are proud to finally recognize them with this benefit." “Both our current players and team governors felt a need to act on behalf of these former ABA players who are aging and, in many cases, facing difficult economic circumstances,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “These pioneers made meaningful contributions to help grow the game of professional basketball and we all believe it’s appropriate to provide financial recognition to this group for their impact.” Under the program, recognition payments to these ABA players will approximate an annual payment of $3,828 per year of service. NBA BOARD OF GOVERNORS APPROVES HEIGHTENED PENALTY FOR TRANSITION TAKE FOUL – Board of Governors Also Adopts Current NBA Play-In Tournament on Full-Time Basis – NEW YORK, July 12, 2022 – The NBA Board of Governors today approved a change to the playing rules that will impose a heightened penalty when a defensive player commits a “transition take foul,” which is an intentional foul committed by a defender to deprive the offensive team of a fast-break opportunity. In addition, the Board of Governors approved the adoption of the NBA Play-In Tournament on a full-time basis using the same format that was in place for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. The NBA’s Competition Committee – which comprises players, representatives from the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), coaches, governors, team basketball executives and referees – unanimously recommended the proposals for both the transition take foul and the Play-In Tournament to the Board of Governors. The recommendation for the transition take foul came after the Competition Committee reviewed the data for a similar experimental rule used in the NBA G League since the 2018-19 season. Transition Take Foul Beginning with the 2022-23 NBA season, the penalty for committing a take foul (a foul in which the defender does not make a play on the ball) to stop a transition scoring opportunity (which exists when, following a change in possession, the offensive team is continuously advancing the ball while it has an advantage based on the speed of the play, the position of the defenders or both) will be as follows: - The offensive team will be awarded one free throw, which may be attempted by any player on the offensive team in the game at the time that the foul is committed.
- The offensive team will retain possession of the ball.
- The defensive player who commits the take foul will be assessed a common personal foul.
Previously, the penalty for a take foul was a common personal foul on the offending player and (assuming the foul did not trigger or exceed the free throw “bonus” in a quarter) a side out for the offensive team. Under the new rule, teams may commit a take foul during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter and the last two minutes of any overtime period (regardless of whether the foul occurs during a fast-break play) without triggering the heightened penalty. This exception will allow the defensive team to use the longstanding tactic of taking a foul to stop the clock during an attempted comeback or prevent the opposing team from potentially tying the game with a three-pointer. Below are additional clarifications to the new rule: - A take foul committed immediately after a change of possession but before the offensive team has the opportunity to advance the ball will be subject to the heightened penalty. This will prevent the defensive team from immediately taking a foul to keep the offensive team from generating a transition scoring opportunity in the first place.
- A foul committed against any offensive player (including a player who does not have the ball) will satisfy the definition of a transition take foul if the other elements of the transition take foul rule are satisfied. This will prevent the defensive team from circumventing the new rule by taking a foul on a player who does not have the ball.
- The transition take foul rule does not apply if the offensive player is fouled in the act of shooting. In that case, a shooting foul will be called.
Any foul committed by a defender attempting to make a legitimate play on the ball will remain a common personal foul (regardless of whether the foul occurs during a fast-break play) and will not be subject to a heightened penalty under the new rule. However, the offending player may be assessed a clear-path-to-the-basket foul if the criteria for a clear-path foul are met. NBA Play-In Tournament The NBA Play-In Tournament that was implemented on a one-year basis for the 2020-21 season and extended for the 2021-22 season will now continue on a full-time basis. Under this format, the teams that finish the regular season with the seventh-highest through the 10th-highest winning percentages in each conference will compete to fill the seventh and eighth playoff seeds in each conference. For the 2022-23 NBA season, the Play-In Tournament will take place April 11-14, 2023, between the last day of the regular season on April 9 and the start of the playoffs on April 15. JULY 10, 2022MALAGA (Spain) - The USA remains atop the youth basketball world as they defeated Spain 79-67 to capture the title at the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2022 - even though the home side really put up a strong challenge. Jeremy Fears poured in 17 points as the Americans' leading scorer while Ron Holland scored 13 points and Cooper Flagg added 10 points, 17 rebounds, 8 steals, and 4 blocks for an efficiency rating of 30. Flagg was outstanding throughout the game while Fears was a major spark in the Americans' decisive 22-4 run in the third quarter. That spurt carried USA to a sixth consecutive U17 World Cup title following 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. In each of those tournaments, USA went through the competition undefeated and head coach Sharman White's team finished the job in the Final in Malaga. USA had been dominant all tournament, winning every game by at least 26 points and improving their all-time record to 43-0 before the Final. But backed by nearly 7,000 spectators, Spain were up to the challenge. They had a seven-point lead after 10 minutes and increased the lead to eight points in the second quarter. To the excitement of the fans, the hosts were up 38-33 at the intermission. Spain still led 47-40 with 7 minutes left in the third quarter when USA's defensive pressure started forcing turnovers and resulted in a 22-4 run to lead 62-51 after three quarters. The momentum had shifted and USA withstood any challenge in the final frame and added another perfect run to global glory. In the Third-Place Game, France defeated Lithuania 66-58 thanks to 16 points from Ilane Fibleuil as the Europeans collected claimed their second-ever U17 World Cup medal following second place in 2018. This time around, no overtime torture. Last year's Women's Series MVP Sandra Ygueravide was on a mission in the final of the Bordeaux Stop. The Spanish sniper scored a game-high 12 points on 8/15 shooting, added 3 rebounds, 5 highlights and ended the game before the limit on a sweet reverse layup.
This happened just an hour after the former number 1 player in the world had the best statistical performance of the tournament in the semi-finals against Hungary: 14 points on 8/14 shooting, 6 rebounds and 4 highlights, including a buzzer-beating two from the top of the key while the score was tied at 20.
Ygueravide was named MVP after leading all scorers in France with 46 points, just ahead of the recent World Cup MVP Laetitia Guapo of France (43 points). Guapo had a team-high 9 points for les Bleues in the final but none of her teammates contributed more than 3 points. NBA SALARY CAP FOR 2022-23 SEASON SET AT $123.655 MILLION NEW YORK, June 30, 2022 – The National Basketball Association today announced that the Salary Cap has been set at $123.655 million for the 2022-23 season. The Tax Level for the 2022-23 season is $150.267 million. The Salary Cap and Tax Level go into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Friday, July 1. Teams were permitted to begin negotiating with free agents today at 6:00 p.m. ET -- six hours prior to the start of the league’s “moratorium period.” The moratorium period ends at noon ET on Wednesday, July 6. The minimum team salary, which is set at 90% of the Salary Cap, is $111.290 million for the 2022-23 season. The Collective Bargaining Agreement provides for three different mid-level exceptions depending on a team’s salary level. The non-taxpayer mid-level for the 2022-23 season is $10.490 million, the taxpayer mid-level is $6.479 million, and the mid-level for a team with room under the Salary Cap is $5.401 million.

ANTWERP (Belgium) - Serbia's men and France's women won the Crelan FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2022, which took place in Antwerp, Belgium in a sold-out outdoor venue on the iconic Groenplaats on June 21-26.
Serbia become world champions for the fifth time (in seven editions!) after defeating Lithuania (21-16) in the final. The number one 3x3 player in the world Strahinja Stojacic had a game-high 9 points in the game. His teammate Dejan Majstorovic led the team in scoring in Antwerp and was named MVP of the competition. The man also known as the 'Maestro' became the (joint) most successful player in 3x3 World Cup history with four titles. He was joined on the Team of the Tournament by Ignas Vaitkus (Lithuania) and Thibaut Vervoort (Belgium).
In the men's bronze medal game, France silenced the home crowd after a nail-biting overtime win against the Belgian hosts. Léo Cavaliere had a game-high 8 points and carried a French team, which was playing with just three players after their top scorer Antoine Eito went down with an ankle injury in the semi-finals.
In the women's category, France won their first-ever World Cup following a 16-13 win against Canada. JUNE 20, 2022 ANTWERP (Belgium) - The finalized rosters of the 20 men's and 20 women's teams in action at the Crelan FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2022, in Antwerp, Belgium, on June 21 to 26 have been confirmed.
Just one day before the start of the 6-day tournament, all rosters have been trimmed to 4 players.
Pool action will last from Tuesday (June 21) to Friday (June 24), with the top team from each pool in both women's and men's categories, making it to the quarter-finals. Each pool's 2nd and 3rd teams will play a Last 16 play-in to advance to the quarter-finals (Saturday, June 25). All semi-finals and medal games will be played on Sunday (June 26).
USA's men and China's women will attempt to retain the title they won in Amsterdam in the last edition of the FIBA 3x3 World Cup back in 2019.
