Since its launch in 2016, Character PlaybookTM – a digital education resource powered by EVERFI, Inc. and presented by the National Football League (NFL) and United Way Worldwide – has reached over 1,000,000 students. Designed for students in grades six through twelve, Character Playbook is composed of two module-based experiential learning courses: Healthy Relationships and Mental Wellness Basics. Together, these virtual learning experiences equip students with tools to help address their interpersonal relationships and mental wellbeing on a foundational level. The program is available to U.S. schools at no cost and has been implemented in over 12,000 schools nationwide. "Working with EVERFI and United Way to build the Character Playbook program over the past five years has been an incredible experience," said ALEXIA GALLAGHER, Vice President of Philanthropy and Executive Director of NFL Foundation. "Whether they're at school or at home, students are constantly cultivating and maintaining relationships. By equipping our kids with the skills to manage their own emotions and communicate effectively, Character Playbook is helping students across the country build positive connections with themselves and others." These courses are meant to be taken sequentially, starting with Healthy Relationships available to students in middle schools nationwide. By raising student expectations for relationships and teaching them how to treat others with kindness, Healthy Relationships increases the likelihood that students will stand up for their peers and play a positive role in their school communities through conflict resolution. Intended for a high school audience and currently reaching 160 high schools across the country, Mental Wellness Basics explores healthy coping skills and increases students' confidence in their ability to find help and to help others in need. "When we're talking about middle school kids, this is when they're trying to learn their identity, they're trying to figure out who they are, trying to see the jocks from the nerds, from the geeks and from other stuff," said Seattle Seahawks Wide Receiver TYLER LOCKETT. "If we can remove all these labels and teach people how to love people and how to be there for one another, we can really have a better society." The NFL and United Way have consistently risen to meet the increasing demand for character education, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic. During the 2020-2021 school year, a sizeable portion of both students and teachers reported being more concerned about students' mental well-being than they were before the coronavirus pandemic. Since widespread school closures began in mid-March 2020, students and schools have continued to access and benefit from Character Playbook's free educational resources. Nearly 260,000 students completed over 460,000 hours of learning during the 2020-2021 academic year, with almost 1,500 more schools leveraging the program. Hosting virtual events was a central part of the Character Playbook program's success during the coronavirus pandemic, allowing students to interact with NFL players, coaches and local United Way staff and executives to showcase their learnings. In 2020, 10,128 students attended 35 Healthy Relationships events, ranging from in-person Character Playbook Live events before COVID-19, to a Huddle for 100 Super Bowl event in Miami, to a series of virtual-only events from March through June. "Prioritizing student mental health is more important now than ever," said Chief Experience Officer of United Way Worldwide STAN LITTLE. "Despite the challenges that the past year has presented, Character Playbook has been a critical tool to help empower young people to advocate for their mental well-being, while strengthening networks of support in the communities that access the course." "Social-emotional learning is a critical missing learning layer in our education system, and it's exhilarating to see five years of focused effort in this area has led to this type of impact," said JON CHAPMAN, President and Co-founder, EVERFI. "We are excited to keep working towards the next million students through evolving our content to better incorporate the voices of the students engaging with the courses and explore the cross-section of cultural literacy and social-emotional learning through our continued strategic partnership with the NFL and United Way Worldwide." NFL ENTERS WEEK 7 WITH UNPRECEDENTED AMOUNT OF LAST-MINUTE ENDINGS, SECOND-MOST OVERTIME GAMES Week 7 is an important juncture in any NFL season. Some teams are hitting their strides while others are developing new identities as adversity forces them to pivot and reframe. For younger players, the game is beginning to slow down. And, teams are reaching bye weekends that allow them to recharge mentally and physically. Week 7 in this NFL season is important because several teams have an opportunity to reach or stay above the always-important .500 mark, keeping pace with division leaders. Recent history proves that having a .500-or-better record after Week 7 is a key factor in earning a trip to the postseason. Over the past 10 years (2011-20), 122 teams made the playoffs and 107 of those (87.7 percent) were either .500 or above through the first seven weeks of the NFL season. That’s why this week is key for several teams, beginning with the Thursday night matchup between 3-3 clubs, the DENVER BRONCOS and CLEVELAND BROWNS (8:20 PM ET, FOX/NFLN/Amazon). Elsewhere across the league: - Two teams coming off their bye weeks, the SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (2-3) and the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (3-2), will attempt – in primetime – to include themselves in that .500-or-better group. The 49ers host the INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (2-4) on Sunday Night Football (8:20 PM ET, NBC), while the Saints travel to play the SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (2-4) on Monday Night Football (8:15 PM ET, ESPN).
- A pair of NFC South teams, the CAROLINA PANTHERS (3-3) and ATLANTA FALCONS (2-3), can maintain pace with respective trips to play the NEW YORK GIANTS (1-5) and MIAMI DOLPHINS (1-5), both 1:00 PM ET kickoffs on FOX.
- The CHICAGO BEARS (3-3) have an opportunity to surprise the TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (5-1) on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, CBS).
- And, in one of the weekend’s marquee pairings, the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (3-3) have a date in Nashville with the TENNESSEE TITANS (4-2) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS).
STREAKS ARE CHIC: Four teams currently own winning streaks of at least five games: ARIZONA (six), BALTIMORE (five), DALLAS (five) and GREEN BAY (five). It’s the first time since Week 13 of the 2018 season in which four-or-more teams have winning streaks of that length. - Three of those clubs (Baltimore, Dallas and Green Bay) lost their 2021 openers. Last season, the Browns, Colts and Super Bowl champion Buccaneers, made the playoffs after losing their initial 2020 games.
SEESAW GAMES: Last week’s Monday night thriller in Nashville, where the Titans held off the Bills, 34-31, in the final seconds, marked the third NFL game this season with at least seven lead changes. - Tennessee and Buffalo matched a Monday Night Football record with their seven lead changes. The only other time it happened in the 52-year history of the primetime series was Sept. 15, 2008, when Dallas emerged with a 41-37 victory over Philadelphia at Texas Stadium.
- Previously this season, two other games have involved seven lead changes: Arizona beat Minnesota, 34-33, in Week 2, and the Chargers defeated Cleveland, 47-42, in Week 5.
- Teetering games have been common so far this season. On average, better than one game per week has included at least five lead changes (seven such games in six weeks).
BONUS TIME: Already this season, 11 games have gone to overtime, the second-most through the first six weeks of a season all-time. Only the 1995 season (12 games) had more at this point. Dallas, Minnesota and Pittsburgh earned overtime victories in Week 6. - At least one game has gone to overtime in each of the first six weeks of the 2021 season, marking the second time ever (2018) that a season has featured at least one overtime game in each of its first six weeks.
- The league needs just one overtime contest this weekend to tie the NFL record for the longest stretch of season-opening weeks with at least one overtime game (Weeks 1-7, 2018).
There have been 23 games with a game-winning score in the final minute of regulation or in overtime this season, the most such games through the first six weeks all-time. TITANS HAVE ANOTHER TITANIC QUARTERBACK ON DOCKET: Fresh off an impressive Monday night win over Buffalo, the TENNESSEE TITANS (4-2) host the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (3-3) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). - The game features the NFL leader in touchdown passes, Kansas City’s PATRICK MAHOMES (18) and his top target TYREEK HILL, who is tied for the NFL lead with 46 receptions. The matchup also includes Tennessee running back DERRICK HENRY, the league leader in both rushing yards (783) and rushing touchdowns (10).
- Last week, Mahomes passed for a season-high 397 yards with two touchdowns, while tight end TRAVIS KELCE had eight receptions for 99 yards in the Chiefs' win at Washington.
- At Nissan Stadium on Sunday, Mahomes can record his 30th career 300-yard passing game and surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer KURT WARNER (29) for the most such games by a player in his first five seasons in NFL history.
- Also this week, Kelce can record his 79th career game with at least five receptions and surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer SHANNON SHARPE (78) for the fourth-most such games by a tight end in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer TONY GONZALEZ (139 games), JASON WITTEN (130) and ANTONIO GATES (96) have more.
- Tennessee running back DERRICK HENRY averaged 7.2 yards per carry (20 attempts, 143 yards) and ran for three touchdowns in the Titans’ victory last week. Henry, who ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns in Week 5, is the first player in 15 years, since Pro Football Hall of Famer LADAINIAN TOMLINSON in 2006, with consecutive games of 100 yards rushing and three-or-more rushing touchdowns. Tomlinson reached those marks over a three-game stretch from Nov. 5-19, 2006.
- Henry’s 13-yard touchdown with 3:05 remaining, and the Titans’ dramatic goal-line stand in the final seconds, sealed Tennessee’s Monday night win last week. The Titans, who outscored the Bills 10-0 in the fourth quarter, have the league’s most come-from-behind wins (13) in the fourth quarter or overtime since head coach MIKE VRABEL took the reins in 2018.
The most wins after trailing in the fourth quarter or overtime, since the beginning of 2018: TEAM | WINS | Titans | 13 | Dolphins | 10 | Chargers | 9 | Eagles | 9 | Raiders | 9 | Saints | 9 | Seahawks | 9 |
BENGALS, RAVENS BATTLE FOR DIVISION LEAD: Quarterbacks JOE BURROW and LAMAR JACKSON will square off for just the second time when the CINCINNATI BENGALS (4-2) travel to meet the BALTIMORE RAVENS (5-1) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). - Last week, Jackson earned his 35th career win as a starting quarterback and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (34 wins) for the most wins by a quarterback prior to his 25th birthday in NFL history. Jackson turns 25 in January.
- In the Bengals’ win last week, Burrow passed for 271 yards with three touchdowns and one interception for a 115.7 rating, while rookie wide receiver JA'MARR CHASE led the team with 97 receiving yards.
- Burrow, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, has at least two touchdown passes in each of the Bengals' first six games this season. He joined Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (first 10 games in 1984) as the only first- or second-year quarterbacks with at least two touchdown passes in each of their team's first six games of a season in NFL history.
- Chase has 553 receiving yards this season, the second-most receiving yards by a rookie in his first six career games in the Super Bowl era. Only ANQUAN BOLDIN (592 receiving yards in 2003) had more.
- Bengals defensive end TREY HENDRICKSON has 19 sacks since the beginning of 2020. Only T.J. WATT (22) and MYLES GARRETT (20) have more in that span.
BUCS AIM FOR BEST START IN FRANCHISE HISTORY: The TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (5-1), who began play as an expansion franchise in 1976, have matched the best start in team history. They also began 5-1 in 2005, 2002, 1997 and 1979. Tampa Bay has never opened a season 6-1 and can reach that mark with a win over the CHICAGO BEARS (3-3) on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, CBS). - Chicago’s defense enters the game tied for the league lead with 21 sacks, while Tampa Bay’s offense has allowed just nine sacks, tied for fifth-fewest in the NFL.
- Tampa Bay quarterback TOM BRADY has the second-most passing yards (2,064) and touchdown passes (17) of his career through six games, topped only by his 2,163 passing yards in 2011 and his 21 touchdown passes in his MVP season of 2007. His 2,064 passing yards this season rank No. 1 in the league.
SAINTS STRONG AFTER BYE WEEKS: The NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (3-2) are fresh off their bye week and play at the SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (2-4) on Monday Night Football (8:15 PM ET, ESPN). Over the last 10 seasons (2011-20), New Orleans is 7-3 in games after bye weeks, tied for the best record in the NFL. On the other sideline, the Seahawks are 4-2 over the previous five seasons (2016-20) against opponents coming off bye weeks. GOFF, STAFFORD BATTLE AT SOFI STADIUM: In their first meeting after trading places as starting quarterbacks of their respective teams, JARED GOFF and the DETROIT LIONS (0-6) go on the road to play MATTHEW STAFFORD and the LOS ANGELES RAMS (5-1) on Sunday (4:05 PM ET, FOX). The trade this past offseason involved two former No. 1 overall selections in the NFL Draft. - Since the beginning of 2018, when Goff led the Rams to a berth in Super Bowl LIII, he has 14,783 passing yards. Over that span, only PATRICK MAHOMES (15,755), MATT RYAN (15,303) and TOM BRADY (15,109) have more.
- Stafford, who this week plays his 172nd NFL game, has 298 career touchdown passes. With two more on Sunday, he would become the eighth player in NFL history to reach the 300-touchdown milestone in 175-or-fewer games.
- This season, Stafford has 16 touchdown passes, the most in NFL history for a player in his first six games with a new team.
The most passing touchdowns by a player over his first six games with a new team in NFL history: PLAYER | TEAM | YEAR(S) | TD PASSES | Matthew Stafford | Los Angeles Rams | 2021 | 16 | Justin Herbert | Los Angeles Chargers | 2020 | 15 | Deshaun Watson | Houston Texans | 2017 | 15 | Kurt WarnerHOF | St. Louis Rams | 1998-99 | 15 | Mark Rypien | Washington | 1988 | 15 |
Rams wide receiver COOPER KUPP leads the NFL with seven touchdown catches, while his 46 receptions are tied for the league lead with DAVANTE ADAMS and TYREEK HILL. Last week, Kupp recorded nine catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Kupp, who also had two touchdown receptions in Week 2 and Week 3, is the first player since JULIUS THOMAS (2014) with at least two touchdown catches in three of his team's first six games of a season. - Kupp also has 46 receptions for 653 yards and seven touchdowns this season and has joined Pro Football Hall of Famer MARVIN HARRISON (45 catches for 709 yards and eight touchdown receptions in 1999) as the only players with at least 45 catches, 650 receiving yards and seven touchdown receptions in their team's first six games of a season in NFL history.

NFL LAUNCHES COMPREHENSIVE RESPONSIBLE BETTING EDUCATION AND AWARENESS INITIATIVE | Campaign Encourages Bettors to "Stick to Your Game Plan. Always Bet Responsibly." NFL Advances Partnership with National Council on Problem Gambling to Transform Helpline System and Fund Innovative Programs across the Country NFL Collaborates with its Official Sports Betting Partners Caesars Entertainment, DraftKings, and FanDuel to Promote and Support Responsible Betting Practices Multifaceted and Integrated League-Wide Effort Includes Broadcast, Digital, In-Stadium, Social Media, and Print Elements NEW YORK, NY, October 20, 2021— The National Football League ("NFL") today announced the launch of an extensive, integrated league-wide responsible betting public awareness program designed to educate fans who choose to engage in sports betting to do so responsibly. The key message encourages people to play responsibly by sticking to a game plan, including setting a budget to know their limits, using licensed, regulated operators, and asking for help if they need it. The core message of the campaign's creative is "Stick to Your Game Plan. Always Bet Responsibly." "We feel it is critical that the NFL uses the power of our voice to educate and encourage fans who choose to bet to do so in a safe and responsible way," said Christopher Halpin, NFL Executive Vice President, Chief Strategy and Growth Officer. "We also recognize that responsible betting programs across the country are under-resourced, especially as legalization spreads nationwide. Collectively, all of us in the sports and betting industries need to learn from international examples and make sure the development of education and support programs matches the state-by-state growth in legalized sports betting. In collaboration with the National Council on Problem Gambling and our commercial partners, the league is fully committed to advancing responsible betting awareness, education, and problem-gambling support."
As part of this initiative, the NFL has made a multimillion-dollar, multi-year commitment to significantly expand its long-standing partnership with the National Council on Problem Gambling ("NCPG"). NCPG is the leading advocacy group committed to addressing problem gambling through public education programs and help services. The NFL's funding will enable the NCPG to launch a national grant program to fund enhanced services offered by local and statewide providers, as well as innovative prevention programs, including expansion of youth-facing curricula. The league's support will also transform the national problem gambling Helpline system and allow for the development of improved communications tools, including a new website, www.responsibleplay.org, which will provide the public with quick tips about betting safely and support resources for those in need.
"The National Council on Problem Gambling is pleased to partner with the NFL to shine a light on the importance of responsible betting," said Keith Whyte, National Council on Problem Gambling Executive Director. "With this partnership, we are able to exponentially enhance the NCPG's ability to provide advocacy, awareness, and assistance on problem gambling. The NFL's far-reaching initiative demonstrates its strong commitment to being an industry leader in raising awareness. The league's support of our advocacy efforts will help fund new communications initiatives, such as ResponsiblePlay.org and a PSA about problem gambling, expand gambling prevention services where they are most needed, and modernize our National Problem Gambling Helpline operations with updated capabilities." Beginning today and continuing throughout the season, fans will see the NFL's responsible betting initiative roll out across a variety of channels including online, in-stadium, social media and in print. Later this fall, the program will begin to run on national and local television, including broadcast partners and NFL owned-and-operated media channels. In addition, the NFL is working with clubs to spread awareness and education at the local level.
Additional Details about the NFL's Responsible Betting Initiative and Related Partnerships include: - The NFL's initiative is informed by fan research and was developed in collaboration with NCPG. The goal of the platform is to establish a clear tone and stance that provides fans who choose to engage in sports betting with an opportunity to raise awareness about responsible betting tactics and resources.

- The NFL's Official Sports Betting Partners have each developed robust responsible gaming programs:
- In the 1980s, Caesars Entertainment became the first casino company to recognize and address responsible gaming through its pioneering "Operation Bet Smart" and "Project 21" programs. In partnership with the National Council on Problem Gambling, Caesars established the first national toll-free helpline in 1995, and was the first casino company to provide that helpline across customer contact points. What To Look For - Week 7 | THE BUC STOPS HERE: After leading the league in rushing defense (80.6 rushing yards allowed per game) during their Super Bowl season last year, the TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS again lead the league in the category through six weeks this season, limiting opponents to 54.8 rushing yards per game. Since the beginning of last season, a span of 22 regular-season games, Tampa Bay has only had one opposing player eclipse the 100-yard rushing mark (Minnesota’s DALVIN COOK rushed for 102 yards in Week 14 of 2020). If the Buccaneers continue this run-stopping pace, they can become the fifth team since 1950 to limit their opponents to fewer than 60 rushing yards per game through their first seven games of a season. With 17 completions and three touchdown passes on Sunday against Chicago (4:25 PM ET, CBS), Brady will become the third player with at least 200 completions and 20 touchdown passes in his team’s first seven games of a season in NFL history, joining ANDREW LUCK (2018) and Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING (2013). Detroit’s JARED GOFF was selected No. 1 overall by the Rams in 2016 and passed for 18,171 yards and 107 touchdowns in 69 starts for the franchise and led them to a Super Bowl LIII appearance in 2018. Los Angeles’ MATTHEW STAFFORD was selected No. 1 overall by the Lions in 2009 and is the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards (45,109), touchdown passes (282) and passer rating (89.9). | NFL Helmet Challenge Raises the Bar for Helmet Technology and Performance, Awards $1.55 Million in Grant Funding | Three teams awarded grant funding to advance their helmet designs and technologies Helmet Challenge submissions achieved up to 13% improvement over the current top-performing football helmet New York (October 25, 2021) – The National Football League (NFL) announced today the results of the NFL Helmet Challenge, a $3 million competition designed to accelerate helmet performance and safety for NFL players. After two years of work, 13 teams made up of experts in biomechanical engineering, materials science, additive manufacturing, and current helmet manufacturers submitted their new helmet prototypes for laboratory testing and evaluation by a judging panel. Three teams – Impressio, Kollide and Xenith – will receive $1.55 million in grant funding to advance their innovative designs and technologies and to help their products get onto the field as soon as possible. The newly awarded $1.55 million in grant funding is in addition to $1.37 million granted last year to help teams create their helmet prototypes.
NFL Helmet Challenge submissions achieved up to a 13% improvement above the top-performing helmet currently worn in the NFL, based on the laboratory testing the NFL and NFLPA use to test and rank helmets each year. This rate of improvement represents more than four times what is typically seen annually in new helmet designs.
The judges selected awardees based on the helmet's ability to reduce the severity of impacts, how novel and promising the technology, and likelihood that the helmet will be used in the NFL. While the Helmet Challenge judging panel offered grant funding to only three teams, four other prototypes – from VICIS, Cardiff University, Nama Development, and Lionhead – achieved scores that would have ranked them among or above the top-performing helmets on the 2021 NFL-NFLPA Helmet Poster.
"The NFL Helmet Challenge is about revolutionary, not just evolutionary improvement," said Jeff Miller, NFL Executive Vice President of Communications, Public Affairs and Policy, who oversees the NFL's health and safety work. "The NFL set out to challenge the marketplace and accelerate development of new technologies. We're proud to support the awardees and advance player health."
Helmet submissions introduced exciting helmet design innovations including: optimization of helmet space as a result of computer modeling; new materials; novel structural designs for managing energy; and use of advanced manufacturing techniques, including 3D printing which allow for more design flexibility and rapid design iteration. Collaboration among experts across many fields, including academics, additive manufacturers, and materials scientists brought together at the NFL's Helmet Challenge kickoff symposium held in collaboration with national 3D printing institute America Makes in November 2019 created these new approaches to football helmets.
The following three teams were awarded grant funding to continue to develop their products, as described by the teams below.
- Impressio (Denver, Colorado) - $454,000
Impressio's helmet leveraged its unique, liquid-crystal elastomer (LCE) material, a soft, multifunctional elastic and highly energy-absorbing material. Combined with 3D printing, Impressio is able to rapidly develop novel helmet and liner solutions that take advantage of this revolutionary material.
- Kollide (Montreal, Canada) - $550,000
By combining unique expertise in industrial design, additive manufacturing, experimental, and virtual testing, the Kollide team developed and optimized a prototype with an energy absorption system. Its liner is made of complex and organic 3D printed mesh calibrated to absorb and redirect impact energy, limiting both the linear and rotational accelerations transmitted to the head.
- Xenith (Detroit, Michigan) - $496,500
Team Xenith's prototype submission was designed and engineered utilizing highly performing and durable materials, across months of optimization and in collaboration between Xenith (Detroit, USA), RHEON Labs (London, UK), BASF 3DP Solutions (Heidelberg, Germany) and University of Waterloo (Waterloo, Canada). The modular prototype incorporates a compliant shell, 3D-printed lattice carrier, engineered RHEON energy control structures, for both geometry and material chemistry, and customizable Kinetix foam inserts for improved helmet performance and comfort.
The judging panel represented expertise in engineering, biomechanics, neurology, sports business, and football, including NFL Legends Orlando Pace and Chad Pennington and Denver Broncos Equipment Manager Chris Valenti.
"We wanted to provide a player's perspective concerning the performance of the helmet," said Pennington. "A player wants a great performing helmet that also has a level of comfort and will be effective on the field. Factors such as weight which addresses neck fatigue and productive facemasks which can greatly affect vision must be taken into consideration as well."
"I was really excited to see the applicants' advancement and outside-the-box thinking on materials used within the helmet," said Valenti. "The bettering of technologies and materials within the context of a helmet more customized than ever to a players' head using 3D scanning and printing is going to be huge moving forward for players."
"Being a former offensive lineman and understanding that players are bigger, faster, and stronger in today's game, and having young kids that play football, ten years from now I'd love to see the game played safer with much better technology," said Pace. "I'm excited to be involved in that progress through this challenge." "The Helmet Challenge was an assessment that there was untapped potential out there, including from incumbent manufacturers who had ideas on their white boards that they hadn't yet brought forward, and from innovators and entrepreneurs working in other areas that could apply their innovations to football," said Dr. Jeff Crandall, Chair of the NFL's Engineering Committee. "The NFL sought to bring partnership, networking and resources to bear to fuel a paradigm shift for transformational improvement, and we are excited about where we are now headed."
The NFL and Football Research, Inc. previously awarded $1.37 million in August 2020 to support the development of applicants' helmet prototypes for submission to the NFL Helmet Challenge. All three awardees selected by the Helmet Challenge judging panel to receive grant funding were also awarded grant funding as part of the HeadHealthTECH Challenge in 2020.
