The highest scoring season in league history, terrific turnarounds, consistent teams excelling again, records falling and young players making their mark. The 2020 season had it all. Competitiveness was a constant theme throughout the regular season as 70 percent of games (179 of 256) were within one score (eight points) in the fourth quarter, the second-most such games in a single season in NFL history. Additionally, 43 games were won by a team that trailed by at least 10 points, tied for the most in a single season in NFL history. Week 17 came down to the wire, as seven playoff spots and two divisions titles – the AFC South and NFC East – were decided on the final day of the season. Sunday’s excitement was due in part to having 16 divisional games played on the season’s final day, a tradition instituted in 2010. Seven of the 14 playoff teams are new to the postseason in 2019: CHICAGO, CLEVELAND, INDIANAPOLIS, LOS ANGELES RAMS, PITTSBURGH, TAMPA BAY and WASHINGTON. Since 1990 – a streak of 31 consecutive seasons – at least four teams have qualified for the playoffs in every season that were not in the postseason the year before. Both the Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC North) and Washington Football Team (NFC East) won their division after missing the postseason in 2019 and at least two teams have won their divisions the season after missing the playoffs in 17 of the past 18 years. Washington completed the “worst-to-first” turnaround, winning the NFC East the season after finishing in last place in the division. At least one team has won its division the season after finishing in or tied for last place in 16 of the past 18 seasons. OFFENSIVE TRENDS: The 2020 season was the most prolific offensive season in league history. Teams combined to score 12,692 total points and 1,473 total touchdowns, both the most in a single season in NFL history. There was an average of 49.6 points scored per game (both teams combined), the most in a single season since 1970. Five teams averaged at least 30 points per game in 2020 - GREEN BAY (31.8), BUFFALO (31.3), TAMPA BAY (30.8), TENNESSEE (30.7) and NEW ORLEANS (30.1) – the most such teams in a single season in NFL history.
PROLIFIC PASSERS: In 2020, league-wide passing numbers trended at a historic pace, as the marks for passer rating (93.6), touchdown passes (871), completion percentage (65.2 percent) and completions (11,756) all ranked as the most in a single season in NFL history. Twelve quarterbacks passed for at least 4,000 yards in 2020, including five with at least 4,500 passing yards: Houston’s DESHAUN WATSON (4,823), Kansas City’s PATRICK MAHOMES (4,740), Tampa Bay’s TOM BRADY (4,633), Atlanta’s MATT RYAN (4,581) and Buffalo’s JOSH ALLEN (4,544). Ten quarterbacks threw at least 30 touchdown passes this season, including six with at least 35 touchdown passes: Green Bay’s AARON RODGERS (48, tied-fifth most in single season in NFL history), Brady (40), Seattle’s RUSSELL WILSON (40), Mahomes (38), Allen (37) and Minnesota’s KIRK COUSINS (35). With Rodgers, Brady and Wilson each throwing at least 40 touchdown passes, 2020 marked the second season in NFL history in which three quarterbacks each threw at least 40 touchdown passes in the same season [2011: DREW BREES (46); AARON RODGERS (45); MATTHEW STAFFORD (41)].
With Mahomes (age 25), Allen (age 24), Watson (33 touchdown passes, age 25) and Los Angeles Chargers rookie quarterback JUSTIN HERBERT (31 touchdown passes, age 22), 2020 is the first season in league history in which four quarterbacks under the age of 26 each threw at least 30 touchdown passes in the same season.
Ten qualified quarterbacks had a passer rating of 100 or higher in 2020, including two with a passer rating of at least 110: Rodgers (121.5 – the second-highest single-season mark in NFL history) and Watson (112.4). The 10 qualfied quarterbacks with a passer rating of 100-or-higher are the most in a single season in NFL history. ALL-PURPOSE BACKS: Nine players rushed for at least 1,000 yards, including four players with at least 1,100 rushing yards, this season: Tennessee’s DERRICK HENRY (2,027, fifth-most in a single season in NFL history), Minnesota’s DALVIN COOK (1,557), Indianapolis’ JONATHAN TAYLOR (1,169) and Green Bay’s AARON JONES (1,104). Ten players recorded at least 10 rushing touchdowns in 2020, including three with at least 15 rushing touchdowns: Henry (17), Cook (16) and New Orleans’ ALVIN KAMARA (16). Nineteen running backs totaled at least 1,000 scrimmage yards this season, including four with at least 1,500 scrimmage yards: Henry (2,141), Cook (1,918), Kamara (1,688) and Chicago’s DAVID MONTGOMERY (1,508). Three running backs – Kamara (21 scrimmage touchdowns), Cook (17) and Henry (17) – each recorded at least 17 scrimmage touchdowns this season. With Cook and Henry, 2020 is the first season since 2006 (LARRY JOHNSON and Pro Football Hall of Famer LADAINIAN TOMLINSON) to feature two players each with at least 1,900 scrimmage yards and 17 scrimmage touchdowns. RIDICULOUS RECEIVERS: Eighteen players had at least 1,000 receiving yards this season, including seven with at least 1,300 receiving yards: Buffalo’s STEFON DIGGS (1,535), Kansas City’s TRAVIS KELCE (1,416), Arizona’s DEANDRE HOPKINS (1,407), Minnesota’s JUSTIN JEFFERSON (1,400), Green Bay’s DAVANTE ADAMS (1,374), Atlanta’s CALVIN RIDLEY (1,374) and Seattle’s DK METCALF (1,303). Eight players had at least 100 receptions in 2020: Diggs (127, sixth-highest single-season total in NFL history), Adams (115), Hopkins (115), Las Vegas’ DARREN WALLER (107), Kelce (105), Chicago’s ALLEN ROBINSON (102), the Los Angeles Chargers’ KEENAN ALLEN (100) and Seattle’s TYLER LOCKETT (100) Nine players had at least 10 touchdown catches this season, including four with at least 13 touchdown receptions: Adams (18, tied-third most in single season in NFL history), Kansas City’s TYREEK HILL (15), Minnesota’s ADAM THIELEN (14) and Tampa Bay’s MIKE EVANS (13). ROOKIE SUCCESS: Rookies combined for the most scrimmage touchdowns (190) and second-most scrimmage yards (26,613) in a single season since 1970.
Five rookies each recorded at least 10 touchdowns this season: Indianapolis' JONATHAN TAYLOR (12), Pittsburgh's CHASE CLAYPOOL (11 touchdowns), Washington's ANTONIO GIBSON (11), Jacksonville's JAMES ROBINSON (10) and Detroit’s D’ANDRE SWIFT (10). This season was the second in the Super Bowl era with at least five rookies each recording at least 10 touchdowns, joining 2008 (five rookies). Three rookies each registered at least 1,400 scrimmage yards in 2020: Taylor (1,468), Robinson (1,414) and Jefferson (1,402). This season joined 2008 (MATT FORTE, CHRIS JOHNSON and STEVE SLATON) as the only seasons since 1970 with three-or-more rookies recording at least 1,400 scrimmage yards. DOMINANT DEFENDERS: Ten players recorded at least 10 sacks in 2020, including six with at least 12 sacks: Pittsburgh’s T.J. WATT (15), the Los Angeles Rams’ AARON DONALD (13.5), New Orleans’ TREY HENDRICKSON (13.5), Arizona’s HAASON REDDICK (12.5), Green Bay’s ZA’DARIUS SMITH (12.5) and Cleveland’s MYLES GARRETT (12). Five players registered at least 15 tackles for loss this season: Watt (23), Chicago’s ROQUAN SMITH (18), the Los Angeles Chargers’ JOEY BOSA (15), Reddick (15) and Tampa Bay’s DEVIN WHITE (15). Six players recorded at least five interceptions this season: Miami’s XAVIEN HOWARD (10), New England’s J.C. A closer look at the finalists: - Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert
Herbert recorded the most touchdown passes (31), most completions (396) and second-most passing yards (4,336) by a rookie quarterback in NFL history. He recorded eight games with at least 300 passing yards, tied for the third-most in the league this season, and surpassed ANDREW LUCK (six games in 2012) for the most 300-yard passing games by a rookie quarterback in NFL history. Herbert, who also had five rushing touchdowns, surpassed CAM NEWTON [35 touchdowns (21 passing, 14 rushing) in 2011] for the most combined passing and rushing touchdowns by a rookie quarterback in NFL history.
- Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson
Jefferson, a 2021 Pro Bowl selection, led all rookies and ranked fourth in the NFL with 1,400 receiving yards, a total that surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer RANDY MOSS (1,313 receiving yards in 1998) for the most in Vikings franchise history and ANQUAN BOLDIN (1,377 receiving yards in 2003) for the most by a rookie wide receiver in the Super Bowl era. Jefferson became the fourth rookie with at least seven games of 100-or-more receiving yards in history, joining BILL GROMAN (nine games in 1960), ODELL BECKHAM JR. (seven games in 2014) and HARLON HILL (seven games in 1954). He also led all rookies with 88 receptions and tied for second among rookies with seven touchdown receptions this season.
- Jacksonville Jaguars running back James Robinson
Robinson ranked second among rookies with 1,414 scrimmage yards (1,070 rushing, 344 receiving) – the most scrimmage yards by an undrafted rookie in the common-draft era – and became the fourth undrafted rookie with at least 1,000 rushing yards since 1967. He had 10 touchdowns (seven rushing, three receiving) in 2020 and is the third undrafted rookie with 10 touchdowns in the common-draft era, joining PHILLIP LINDSAY (2018) and DOMINIC RHODES (2001). Robinson had seven games with at least 100 scrimmage yards this season, tied with CLARK GAINES (seven games in 1976) for the most such games by an undrafted rookie since 1967 era.
- Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor
Taylor led all rookies and ranked third in the NFL with 1,169 rushing yards while his 1,468 scrimmage yards were the sixth-most in the league this season. He led all rookies with 12 touchdowns (11 rushing, one receiving) and joined Pro Football Hall of Famers MARSHALL FAULK (1994) and EDGERRIN JAMES (1999) as the only Colts rookies with at least 10 touchdowns since 1990. Taylor rushed for 253 yards in Week 17, tied with DEMARCO MURRAY (253 rushing yards on October 23, 2011) for the second-most rushing yards by a rookie in a single game in NFL history.
- Washington Football Team defensive end Chase Young
Young, a 2021 Pro Bowl selection, led all rookies in sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (10), and was the only player in the NFL this season with at least four forced fumbles (four) and three fumble recoveries (three). In Washington’s final seven games (Weeks 11-17), Young totaled four sacks, four passes defensed, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one touchdown as the team went 5-2 down the stretch to earn their first division title since 2015.

The league and its clubs have provided more than $95 million to date in support of programs focused on education, economic advancement, police and community relations, and criminal justice reform, encouraging unity and respect in our communities. These efforts contribute to the ten-year $250 million commitment by the NFL to social justice. Inspire Change launched during the 2018 season, showcasing the collaborative efforts of players, clubs, and the league to create positive change in communities across the country. Unanimously approved by the Player-Owner Social Justice Working Group, the 13 new grants total nearly $4.3 million and come in addition to the 20 organizations awarded funding over the last three years. "As a league, we are proud to provide financial support for such impactful programs that inspire change, but we know our work as a league and at the team level in the cities where we play is not done and we must continue to support the march against social injustice," said Atlanta Falcons Owner and Chairman and member of the Player-Owner Social Justice Working Group, Arthur Blank. "This past year opened the eyes of so many to the inequality suffered by many of our fellow brothers and sisters, neighbors and associates. We will continue to stand with our players as we address underlying issues and bring people together to achieve meaningful, positive change." The Working Group also made a commitment to address the "digital divide," a longstanding barrier to internet and technology access in the U.S., particularly in communities of color. This year these disparities have been exacerbated due to the COVID-19 pandemic where students and families were forced to learn and work from home. As such, the Working Group voted to dedicate an additional $1 million earmarked specifically for NFL clubs to work with local nonprofits to help alleviate the "digital divide" in areas that need the most support. "Education is a basic human right, and we can no longer deprive students of the tools they need to succeed, including devices and the Internet," said Kelvin Beachum, Players Coalition task force member, Player-Owner Social Justice Working Group member, and Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman. "I am proud of the work Players Coalition and the NFL has done to help close this 'digital divide' and help those children in underserved communities. There is a lot more work to do, and I hope together with support from the new federal government we will be able to continue what we've started and make sure no child's education suffers because of lack of resources." In addition, the NFL Foundation has now provided more than 1,200 matching grants to current players and Legends for nonprofits of their choice to help reduce barriers to opportunity. These grants have supported more than 500 nonprofit organizations in areas ranging from education to racial equality. New Inspire Change Grant Recipients The following organizations are the 13 new social justice grantees: - Association for Enterprise Opportunity will utilize its funding to support the "RESILI" program designed to provide strategy and developmental assistance to local Black owned businesses and target the wealth gap that exists between Black and white American families.
- Boys & Girls Clubs of America will use the funding to support its Youth for Change Town Hall and the creation of the TLC Youth Advocacy process, an effort to further educate 5,000 teens and build advocacy capacity via service-learning projects. The organization will also train 32 staff members on leading Wellness Mentoring Circles to address topics related to culture, history and customs in the context of community.
- Breakthrough Miami will focus its grant to advance the Changemaker Leadership Track supporting current Breakthrough Scholars and recent alumni to build capacities to challenge the digital divide, gain early work experience, college advising, financial literacy and leadership development.
- Center for Policing Equity: plans to expand COMPSTAT usage– a software that tracks incidents, identifies trends and holds departments accountable by measuring crime. The organization combines data collected from COMPSTAT with census information (geographic markers, racial disparities, etc.) to more accurately measure justice.
- Covenant House will strengthen its workforce development and education services across the U.S., providing support specifically designed to meet the needs of youth and young families facing homelessness.
- Just City-Memphis will use funding to support the Memphis Community Bail Fund, the Clean Slate Fund, and Court Watch programs. Memphis Bail Fund has freed more than 500 people from pretrial detention, while the Clean Slate Fund helps people navigate the complicated process of expungement. Court Watch trains and places volunteers in courts to observe – targeting the disproportionate impact the system has on people of color.
- Ladies of Hope Ministries will use the grant to support its Faces of Women Imprisoned Speakers Bureau, Parole and Probation Accountability Project, and EPIC Ambassadors policy advocacy project. Through its #RewritingHerStory series, the LOHM changes the narrative about women and girls who are directly affected by the criminal justice system and transforms policies and practices that limit opportunities and exacerbate a cycle of poverty, trauma, harm, and incarceration. National ambassadors work directly with policymakers to address probation restrictions, and police and community relations.
- MENTOR will increase its resources and tools on virtual mentoring made available to mentoring programs nationwide. The organization will continue to recruit and train people, schools, and employers to bolster youth mentoring, advocate, organize, and advise government to create policies that integrate mentoring, and provide research and training on mentoring best practices through their local affiliates and the overall intersection of social, racial, and economic equity and supportive relationships.
- Oregon Justice Resource Center will use its funding to support the Women's Justice Project – the first and only program in Oregon that addresses the needs of women in the criminal justice system. The program provides direct legal services, public awareness campaigns, and advocacy coordination.
- Per Scholas will enroll 220 new individuals into their Software Engineering courses – a 15-week, full-time training program that will include technical instruction and professional development in efforts to advance economic equity.
- Texas Appleseed will use its funding to support the organization's work in three areas that that disproportionately affect Black and Latinx Texans from low-income backgrounds: driver's license suspensions, criminal record expungement, and debt collection.
- United Way Worldwide will put the funding toward the Young Men United initiative, a national platform which aims to support 25,000 young men of color in the United States to and through post-secondary and into entry level career positions. United Way Worldwide and local United Ways will provide mentorships, internships, college and career readiness supports, and need-based funding to support each student, over the course of six years, beginning in junior year of high school and continuing through college graduation.
- US Dream Academy will use its funding to aid in the continuation of the Children of Incarcerated Parents initiative, providing mentorship, leadership training, educational support and career readiness for a unique population of primarily Black and Latinx young people in communities harmed by racial bias and mass incarceration.
Raising Awareness for Social Justice To further raise awareness for social justice, the league will continue its series of Inspire Change television spots, highlighting the efforts of grant partners, clubs, and players. A piece centered on criminal justice reform featuring grant partner the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, the Los Angeles Rams, and So-Fi Stadium will launch on January 9 and run through the postseason. Earlier spots in the series featured Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America (education), Vera Institute of Justice and Houston Texans safety Michael Thomas (police and community relations), as well as Operation HOPE and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner (economic advancement). Two other features to air through the remainder of the season will highlight Beachum's work with the Players Coalition to end the "digital divide" and Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill's efforts to achieve racial justice with the Equal Justice Initiative. Ahead of Kickoff the NFL launched Say Their Stories alongside its helmet decal program honoring victims of systemic racism or social justice heroes. The season-long series aimed to raise awareness of social injustice and provided a platform for NFL players to recognize those names. Two upcoming installments during the postseason will highlight the importance of the phrase "Black Lives Matter" and the legacy of Emmett Till. The first is narrated by Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darius Leonard and will premier on January 8 on NFL Network's Total Access. The second will be narrated by Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf and is slated to premiere on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 18 also on NFL Network. For the duration of the Playoffs, the league has added on-field representation of Inspire Change. On gameday, player helmets will feature Inspire Change stickers. Inspire Change messaging will also be found on banners, goal post wraps and sideline stencils. Un vistazo a los seis partidos del Súper Fin de semana de Comodines: INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (11-5) en BUFFALO BILLS (13-3) Sábado, CBS/CBS All Access, 1:05 PM, hora de New York - Buffalo aseguró su tercer visita a la postemporada en las últimas cuatro temporadas, desde que SEAN McDERMOTT se convirtió en el entrenador en jefe. Los Bills ganaron su división por primera ocasión desde 1995 y el derecho a ser anfitriones en su primer partido de playoffs desde la temporada 1996.
- Indianapolis se aseguró su segunda clasificación a postemporada en las últimas tres temporadas, desde que FRANK REICH se convirtió en el entrenador en jefe.
- Ofensivamente esta temporada, los Bills fueron los segundos mejores en la liga en puntos por partido (31.3) y empataron el segundo lugar en ofensiva total (396.4 yardas/partido).

- Los Rams aseguraron a clasificación a postemporada en tres de las últimas cuatro temporadas, desde SEAN MCVAY se convirtió en el entrenador en jefe.
- Los clubes reparten la serie de temporada regular en 2020, con cada club ganando su partido en casa. Los Rams derrotaron a Seattle 23-16 en la semana 10, mientras que los Seahawks vencieron a Los Angeles 20-9 en la 16.
- Desde que ficharon al mariscal de campo RUSSELL WILSON en la tercera vuelta del Sorteo Universitario de la NFL 2012, Seattle se ha ganado ocho viajes a la postemporada en nueve años.

- Chicago se aseguró su segundo viaje a la postemporada en los tres años bajo el entrenador en jefe MATT NAGY.
- El mariscal de campo de los Bears MITCHELL TRUBISKY lideró a Chicago hacia los playoffs 2020 al registrar una marca de 6-3 como titular. En la única titularidad de su carrera en postemporada, lanzó 303 yardas y una anotación, sin intercepción alguna (6 de enero de 2019, contra Philadelphia).
