TEAIR TART, SHAWN WILLIAMS EACH SUSPENDED ONE GAME FOR VIOLATIONS OF UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS & UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT RULES

Teair Tart of the Tennessee Titans and Shawn Williams of the Cincinnati Bengals have each been suspended without pay for one game for violations of unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct rules.

NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan issued the suspensions for violations of Rule 12, Section 2, Article 8, which prohibits unnecessary roughness, and Rule 12, Section 3, which prohibits unsportsmanlike conduct. Runyan specifically noted in both cases that Tart and Williams committed non-football acts, unnecessarily stepping on their opponents.

Tart will be eligible to return to the Titans’ active roster on Monday, December 14, following the team’s December 13 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Williams will be eligible to return to the Bengals’ active roster on Monday, December 14, following the team’s December 13 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Tart and Williams may appeal their suspensions within three business days. Any appeals will be heard and decided by either Derrick Brooks or James Thrash, the hearing officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to decide appeals of on-field player discipline.

THURSDAY NIGHT PREVIEW:
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (6-6) AT LOS ANGELES RAMS (8-4)

Week 14 of the 2020 NFL season gets underway on Thursday, December 10 (8:20 PM ET, FOX/NFL Network/Amazon), as the New England Patriots visit the Los Angeles Rams in a rematch of both Super Bowl XXXVI and Super Bowl LIII. In the final game of the 2018 season, the Patriots defeated the Rams, 13-3, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the sixth Super Bowl title in franchise history as running back SONY MICHEL rushed for the game-deciding touchdown with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. In Super Bowl XXXVI (February 3, 2002, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans), the Rams overcame a 14-point deficit to tie the game at 17 with 1:30 remaining before ADAM VINATIERI kicked a game-winning 48-yard field goal as time expired to capture the first Super Bowl win in Patriots history.

Last week, New England earned a 45-0 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers as quarterback CAM NEWTON totaled three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) in the victory. He has four games with two rushing touchdowns this season, the most by a quarterback in a single season in NFL history, and has 10 career games with at least two rushing touchdowns, the most ever by a quarterback. Newton leads all quarterbacks with 11 rushing touchdowns this season and is the first quarterback in league annals with three career seasons of at least 10 rushing touchdowns, having also reached the mark in 2015 (10 rushing touchdowns) and 2011 (14). Last week, wide receiver GUNNER OLSZEWSKI had his first-career touchdown catch and a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown while defensive back DEVIN MCCOURTY returned a blocked field goal 44 yards for a touchdown. The Patriots are the sixth team in NFL history with both a punt-return touchdown and blocked field goal return for a touchdown in the same game and first since the BALTIMORE RAVENS in Week 12, 2015. Cornerback STEPHON GILMORE recorded an interception and forced fumble in Super Bowl LIII and has five passes defensed in three career games against the Rams, including the postseason. In eight career games on Thursday, he has 11 passes defensed along with one interception and one forced fumble. Cornerback J.C. JACKSON registered his career-high seventh interception last week, second-most in the NFL this season.

In Week 13, Rams quarterback JARED GOFF passed for 351 yards with two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing) and zero interceptions for a 104.9 rating in the team’s 38-28 win over Arizona. Since 2017, he leads the league with 14 games with 350-or-more pass yards. In four career starts on Thursday Night Football, Goff has 1,287 passing yards (321.8 per game) with nine touchdowns and one interception for a 116.5 rating. Rookie running back CAM AKERS registered a career-high 94 scrimmage yards (72 rushing, 22 receiving) with a rushing touchdown last week and aims for his fourth in a row with a touchdown. Wide receiver ROBERT WOODS led the team with 10 receptions and 85 receiving yards in Week 13, his sixth career game with at least 10 catches. Woods (71 receptions) along with wide receiver COOPER KUPP (74) are the only pair of wide receiver teammates each with at least 70 receptions this season. Defensive lineman AARON DONALD registered his 11th sack of the season last week, tied with T.J. WATT (11) for the most in the NFL. He has 83 career sacks, tied for the fifth-most among players in their first seven seasons since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic. In six career games on Thursday Night Football, Donald has four sacks and seven tackles for loss. NFL HOSTS FIFTH CAREERS IN FOOTBALL FORUM FOR HBCU STUDENTS

Career development program for Historically Black Colleges and Universities to be hosted virtually

NEW YORK (December 7, 2020) – More than 150 students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities have been selected to attend the 2020 NFL HBCU Careers in Football Forum. The annual forum, held virtually this year, will take place on December 10 and 11.

Since 2016, the Forum has introduced more than 300 students and entry-level athletic department administrators to career opportunities in professional football. Each year, the Forum invites participants to hear from sports industry professionals and creates networking opportunities for students to learn more about their desired career path. This year, attendees will represent 39 institutions.

"An important aspect of strengthening diversity and inclusion within our league is continued development of the talent pipeline," said NFL Vice President of Football Strategy and Business Development, Natara Holloway. "One of several key programs that help introduce us to the next generation of industry leaders, the Careers in Football Forum also provides attendees an inside look at the sports industry. We look forward to our continued efforts and ever-evolving relationships with HBCUs across the country."

The event will open with a panel discussion entitled "Commissioners Corner" featuring Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner Gregory Moore, Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland, Mid-eastern Athletic Conference Associate Commissioner Sonja Stills, and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Commissioner Jacquie McWilliams. The panelists will share insights on the roles and responsibilities of an athletic conference commissioner.

On day two, attendees will engage with NFL league office and club human resources representatives, followed by a conversation with club executives featuring Washington Football Team President Jason Wright, Carolina Panthers President Tom Glick, Atlanta Falcons President and CEO Rich McKay, and Baltimore Ravens Executive Vice President and Former General Manager Ozzie Newsome. Covering football administration and careers found across the sports industry, other event panelists include representatives from Nike, the Fritz Pollard Alliance, Roc Nation, the NCAA, and other collegiate athletic office. The forum will conclude with breakout sessions where attendees can speak with professionals in their discipline of choice in areas ranging from football operations to marketing.

Since the program's inception, 11 students from the Forum have gone on to secure internships or full-time opportunities with the NFL, NFL clubs, colleges and universities, and other sports entities.

"The HBCU Careers in Football Forum provides an unmatched level of access to professional development advice and connection to industry professionals across multiple facets of the world of sports," said Micah Holmes, NFL Junior Rotational Program participant. "Being able to continue my work with the Football Operations team at the Careers in Football Forum allowed me to gain hands-on experience running larger events, but also see first-hand how important events like these are to HBCU students who may not traditionally have this level of access to the NFL and representatives of other large sports entities. As a member of the Junior Rotational Program and an HBCU Alum (Morehouse College), I can attest to the fact that the professional development advice, networking opportunities, and encouragement from professionals at the Forum helped propel my career forward and a mandatory experience for HBCU students looking to make their mark in the sports world in the future."

This year, the league established an online talent community to serve as a source of diverse talent for current and future career opportunities accessible by the league office and NFL clubs. Through the platform, HBCU students can submit an expression of interest which outlines their professional experience, career goals and specific interest in working in professional football. Individuals can also interact with an NFL Talent Specialist to learn about league news, careers, networking opportunities and recruitment events after the Forum.

32 PLAYERS NOMINATED FOR 2020 ART ROONEY SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

Winner to be revealed as part of NFL Honors before Super Bowl LV

The 32 players nominated for the seventh annual ART ROONEY SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD have been finalized, the NFL announced today. Each NFL team nominated one player for the award, which recognizes players who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship on the field.

The award was created in 2014 in honor of the late founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pro Football Hall of Famer ART ROONEY, SR.

A panel of former players from the NFL Legends Community – WARRICK DUNN, Pro Football Hall of Famer CURTIS MARTINKARL MECKLENBURG and LEONARD WHEELER – will select eight finalists (four in the AFC and four in the NFC) from the 32 nominees. The eight finalists will be listed on the Pro Bowl ballot under the NFL Sportsmanship Award category when players vote on Friday, December 18.

The award is presented each year to an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.

HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL

AS NFL TURNS CALENDAR TO DECEMBER

Pro Football Hall of Famer VINCE LOMBARDI once said there is only one way to succeed in anything, and that’s to give it everything.

And as the 2020 season enters December, the time to give it everything has arrived.

Week 13 kicks off with a dozen games on Sunday, all 14 playoff berths up for grabs and memories to be made. But first, the BALTIMORE RAVENS conclude Week 12 at the PITTSBURGH STEELERS (Wednesday, 3:40 PM, NBC). It will mark the third Wednesday NFL game since 1941. On Sept. 5, 2012, the Dallas Cowboys defeated the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants, 24-17, to kick off the season. And, on Sept. 22, 1948, the Los Angeles Rams opened their season with a 44-7 home win over the Detroit Lions.

DECEMBER CONTENDERS: Fifteen NFL teams turn the calendar with a record of .500 or better, including the BALTIMORE RAVENS (6-4), KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (10-1) and NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (9-2). Since 2017, those teams have consistently ranked among the best over the final quarter of the season.

STRENGTH VS. STRENGTH: In a battle of 8-3 teams in the AFC, the CLEVELAND BROWNS travel to meet the TENNESSEE TITANS on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). The Browns are off to their best start since they were also 8-3 in 1994, while the Titans have their best record through 11 games since they were 10-1 in 2008.

  • Cleveland, which boasts the league’s top rushing offense (161.4 yards per game), faces the Titans’ DERRICK HENRY, who leads the NFL with 1,257 rushing yards.
  • In fact, the contest will feature three of the NFL’s nine leading rushers, including the Browns’ NICK CHUBB (719 rushing yards, tied for sixth) and KAREEM HUNT (706, ninth). The Cleveland duo is on pace to become the first pair of Browns players to each top 1,000 rushing yards in the same season since EARNEST BYNER (1,002) and KEVIN MACK (1,104) in 1985.
  • Henry, who paced the NFL with 1,540 rushing yards in 2019, seeks to become the first player to lead the league in rushing yards in consecutive seasons since Pro Football Hall of Famer LADAINIAN TOMLINSON in 2006-07.
  • Last week, Henry rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns in the Titans’ 45-26 win at Indianapolis. Henry is the fourth player in NFL history with three games of at least 175 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in his first five seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers JIM BROWN (five games) and LADAINIAN TOMLINSON (three), as well as ADRIAN PETERSON (three).
  • The Titans have the league’s fewest giveaways this season with five.

MAHOMES, HILL BACK IN PRIMETIME: The KANSAS CITY CHIEFS take on the DENVER BRONCOS on Sunday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium (8:20 PM ET, NBC). The Chiefs have won 19 of their last 20 games, including the postseason.

  • Last week in a win at Tampa Bay, PATRICK MAHOMES became the first player with at least 30 completions and 300 passing yards in four consecutive games in league annals. He completed 37 of 49 attempts (75.5 percent) for 462 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions for a 124.7 rating in the victory.
  • Mahomes has five career games with at least 400 passing yards and three touchdowns, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (six games) as the only players with at least five such games in their first four seasons in league annals. Mahomes also has 15 career games with at least 300 passing yards and three touchdowns, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (15 games) for the second-most such games by a player in his first four seasons in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer KURT WARNER (17 games) has more.
  • Kansas City wide receiver TYREEK HILL had a career-high 13 receptions for a career-best 269 yards and three touchdowns on Sunday. Hill had 203 receiving yards in the first quarter and became the third player since 1980 with at least 200 receiving yards in a single quarter, joining QADRY ISMAIL (210 receiving yards in third quarter on Dec. 12, 1999) and LEE EVANS (205 in first quarter on Nov. 19, 2006).
  • Hill, who had 10 receptions for 215 yards and two touchdowns in Week 11 of the 2018 season, is the sixth player with two career games of at least 10 receptions, 200 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns in NFL history, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers DON HUTSON and JERRY RICE, as well as AMARI COOPERCHAD JOHNSON and ART POWELL.

SAINTS, NFL TEAMS WINNING ON ROAD: Two of the league’s hottest teams meet at Mercedes-Benz Stadium when the ATLANTA FALCONS host the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX). New Orleans has won eight straight games while the Falcons have won four of their last six under coach RAHEEM MORRIS.

  • On the road, New Orleans is 4-1 this season and, over a longer stretch, is 17-3 over its last 20 road games.
  • In a trend that started last season, road teams are winning more often. Last year, road teams were 123-132-1 (.482), the NFL’s best single-season mark since 1972 (87-90-5, .492). This year with one game remaining in Week 12, road teams are 85-90-1 (.489).
  • Last week at Denver, New Orleans quarterback TAYSOM HILL rushed for two touchdowns in the Saints’ win. Hill, who had two rushing touchdowns in his first career start at quarterback in Week 11, is the second player with at least two rushing touchdowns in each of his first two career starts at quarterback in the Super Bowl era, joining ERIC HIPPLE (1981).
  • New Orleans has the NFL’s No. 1-ranked defense, allowing 284.9 yards per game. The Saints have allowed fewer than 10 points in three of their past four games.

HOPE FOR THE STRETCH RUN: In 15 of the past 17 seasons, at least one team has won its division the season after finishing in last or tied for last place. Of the 48 teams in league history to go from “worst-to-first,” 25 of them have done so in the past 17 years (2003-19), including an NFL-record three such teams in 2005 and 2006. Two teams during that span, the 2009 New Orleans Saints and the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles, won the Super Bowl after finishing in last place in their divisions the season before.

  • One of the teams with an opportunity to advance from last to first in its division is the MIAMI DOLPHINS (7-4), who host the CINCINNATI BENGALS on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Miami ranks fifth in the NFL with a plus-six turnover ratio. Cornerback XAVIEN HOWARD leads the NFL with seven interceptions, while defensive end EMMANUEL OGBAH is tied for seventh with eight sacks.

In 14 of the past 16 seasons, at least one team with a losing record after 11 games has qualified for the playoffs. Last week, three teams – the MINNESOTA VIKINGSNEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS and SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS – each won close games to improve to 5-6 on the season.

RECORD NUMBER OF NFL PLAYERS RAISE AWARENESS THROUGH MY CAUSE MY CLEATS

Campaign helps bring causes to the forefront in its fifth season

NEW YORK (December 1, 2020) – For the fifth-consecutive season, NFL players will raise awareness for non-profit organizations and causes on the field through the My Cause My Cleats campaign. This year a record number of more than 1000 players will participate, highlighting efforts to help make a difference in communities across the country. My Cause My Cleats launches today on Giving Tuesday. NFL clubs and players will continue to unveil cause-inspired cleats throughout the week.

The player-led campaign began in 2016 and has since provided a platform to bring causes they are most passionate about to the forefront on gameday. This year's causes include topics such as tackling social injustice, supporting families in the wake of COVID-19, and bridging the digital divide.  Out of the total 20.5 percent of players selected social justice causes, 17 percent selected causes related to youth and education while 14 percent of players will support health and wellness-related initiatives. Players worked with artists and cleat manufacturers to create their custom-designed cleats and will wear them during Week 13. Some NFL teams without a home game during Week 13 may also activate during Week 14.

"My Cause My Cleats was created out of conversations with NFL players who wanted an opportunity to shed light on causes that mean the most to them," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "Season after season I am inspired by the growing number of NFL players that participate in My Cause My Cleats and the causes they represent. Each player has a story to tell and we are grateful for the impact they make in the communities in which they live and work, and society in general."

In the coming weeks, the league will highlight players and their causes through national television spots and features. The first My Cause My Cleats television spot launches on Sunday, December 6 and will feature Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes discussing his charity – 15 and the Mahomies.  A second spot during Week 13 will feature Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen who will call attention to mental health through the Thielen Foundation.  Additional television spots will continue through Week 14 featuring Arizona Cardinals offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum, who will support the Players Coalition, and Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who will represent both the Equal Justice Initiative and Lifewater International. NFL Network will also air features highlighting the charitable efforts of Mahomes, Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews, Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, also to premiere during Week 13.

Players have the option to raise funds for their cause of choice through auctioning their cleats on NFL Auction where 100% of funds raised will be donated to the charities they select. Fans may bid on player cleats at NFL.com/Auction and help raise funds for the causes nearest to their hearts. To learn more about each player's cause visit www.nfl.com/mycausemycleats.
