De estelares El Diamante’ Verdejo y ‘Pitufo’ Díaz el 16 de abril en Puerto Rico
Los invictos contendientes puertorriqueños estelarizarán el cartel ‘Solo Boxeo Tecate’ que se celebrará el sábado 16 de abril en el Coliseo Roberto Clemente de San Juan, P.R.
SAN JUAN, PR – Dos de las más grandes atracciones del boxeo puertorriqueño en la actualidad, los invictos contendientes boricuas Félix ‘El Diamante’ Verdejo y Christopher ‘Pitufo’ Díaz, regresarán a la ‘Isla del Encanto’ para estelarizar la función ‘Solo Boxeo Tecate’ que se llevará a cabo el sábado 16 de abril en el Coliseo Roberto Clemente de la capital borinqueña.
Verdejo (20-0, 14 KO’s) defenderá por cuarta ocasión su título latino peso ligero de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), mientras que Díaz (15-0, 10 KO's) disputará el título juvenil peso pluma del mismo organismo. Pronto se estarán anunciando los respectivos rivales de ambos peleadores.
“Me siento nuevamente emocionado con la oportunidad de volver a pelear en el Clemente, en mi tierra, ante mi gente. Contento porque luego de un par de semanas de descanso ya estoy en el gimnasio trabajando duro puliendo mis destrezas y añadiendo armas a mi arsenal. No estuve satisfecho con mi última pelea así que sigo buscando perfeccionar mis habilidades para seguir cargando nuestra bandera en mis hombros y llevarla hasta lo más alto del deporte,” manifestó Verdejo.
“Muy contento de estar de nuevo en casa, ahora con un poco más de reconocimiento de ese público que me ha visto evolucionar cómo peleador junto a mi hermano Félix Verdejo. El prometor prospecto invicto Alberto ‘Explosivo’ Machado (13-0, 11KO’s) estará en acción cuando se mida al guerrero mexicano Miguel Angel Mendoza (22-7-2, 21KO’s) en un combate a 8 asaltos en la división super pluma Además, José ‘Chiquiro’ Martínez (16-0 y 10), de Las Marías, defenderá a 10 episodios su cetro Latino del CMB para las 115 libras ante Edwin Rodríguez (7-2 y cuatro), de Juana Díaz. A perennial contender in the 170-pound division, MacDonald (18-3, fighting out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada by way of Quesnel, B.C., Canada) has won eight of his last 10 outings. He holds impressive victories over Tarec Saffiedine, Tyron Woodley, Demian Maia, Jake Ellenberger and B.J. Penn. At UFC 189 in July, MacDonald came up short in 2015’s Fight of the Year against welterweight champion Robbie Lawler.
Among the most dynamic strikers in mixed martial arts, Thompson (12-1, fighting out of Simpsonville, South Carolina, USA) is currently riding a six-fight win streak. In a battle of two undefeated stars under the age of 25, the always dangerous, No. 7 Almeida (21-0, fighting out of Sao Paulo, Brazil) possesses the tools to end the fight in the blink of an eye. Fourteen of his last 15 contests have ended by way of knockout, including three straight. An impressive showing in this fight will put him among the elite at 135 pounds. Looking to end the Brazilian’s night just as fast is No. 15 Garbrandt (8-0, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.), who utilizes his boxing background to unleash ferocious strikes upon his opposition. Coming off a first-round knockout in his last outing, the seventh knockout of his career, the 24-year-old phenom hopes to continue his run through the bantamweight gauntlet.
Former UFC bantamweight world champion and current No. 4 bantamweight Barao (35-3, 1NC, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) will bring his championship pedigree and experience to his featherweight debut when he clashes with No. 9 Stephens (24-12, fighting out of San Diego, Calif.). Barao will need to utilize his multifaceted skillset to handle the aggressive and heavy-handed striking of Stephens, who jumps at the chance to face the best. With a win over current lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos already under his belt, Stephens looks to send Barao back to the drawing board.
Plus, with 21 knockouts and 13 first-round finishes between them, hard-hitting welterweights Jorge Masvidal (29-10, fighting out of Miami, Fla.) and Lorenz Larkin (16-5, 1 NC, fighting out of Riverside, Calif.) meet in an early Fight of the Night contender.
